Nintendo Starts Wii Greatest Hits Line in Japan

Seven games, including Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Arc Rise Fantasia, will kick it off in late February.

Starting late next month, Nintendo will kick off their new budget line of Wii titles in Japan. Called the Minna no Osusume Selection, which roughly translates to "Everyone's Recommendation Selection," the line will focus on rereleasing quality third-party software at budget prices.

In order to qualify for this branding, a game must have reached either bronze, silver, gold, or platinum status on the Nintendo Channel. In other words, gamers get to decide which games can qualify for this line. According to Nintendo, there are already 75 games that qualify for this line, but they have decided to kick it off with the following titles:

  • 428 (Sega, Platinum)
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Marvelous, Gold)
  • Arc Rise Fantasia (Marvelous, Silver)
  • We Ski & Snowboard (Namco Bandai, Silver)
  • One Piece Unlimited Cruise Episode 1 (Namco Bandai, Silver)
  • Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Namco Bandai, Bronze)
  • Dragon Ball Z Sparking! Meteor (Namco Bandai, Bronze)

Each of these games will cost ¥2,800 ($31) and will be available on February 25. There has been no word on whether or not the brand will introduce any more titles, or if Nintendo of America will start a similar line.

We need this so badly in America. (You know what else we need in America? Arc Rise Fantasia.)

This is a great idea! Notice how the first batch consists of the best third party games on the Wii. This seems like a great initiative to inspire more people to buy third party software. And the fact that they use the ratings from the Nintendo Channel is great.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterJanuary 21, 2010

I think this is pretty cool! If this happens in America, One Piece and Maramusa are mine!

Matthew²January 21, 2010

Well seeing as Nintendo of Europe aren't introducing the line, I'm having doubts that Nintendo of America will bring it over.

BlackNMild2k1January 21, 2010

I said this in the other thread, but this seems like the perfect way for Nintendo to provide that oh so needed and asked for marketing support to 3rd parties, but only giving it to the games that deserve it.

ShyGuyJanuary 21, 2010

I would buy excite Truck for $30.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJanuary 21, 2010

FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD, I SAID 'BACON AND EGGS'
how much MORE help do 3rd parties need from Nintendo?

- Nintendo shows robust motion software covering first-party sports, adventure, and action franchises, etc.; "good" examples...
- Nintendo intentionally designed Wii with low specs to help keep dev costs from getting out-of-hand...
- Nintendo keeps their games full price, allowing 3rd parties debut some games at an attractive $40 or less...
- Nintendo has frequent first-party droughts, providing generous breathing room for 3rd party releases (relieving 3rd parties of "competition" with Nintendo titles)...
- Nintendo continues to focus on their unique first-party properties (sequels, ports, rehash and other strictly Nintendo-ish games), leaving the remaining library/genre spectrum open for 3rd parties to fill-in...

NOW, Nintendo will take some responsibility in selling games that 3rd parties couldn't the first time around?

FUCK SALT

3rd party:  "Thanks for supporting us, Nintendo!  What do our games have to do to get this special recognition?"
Nintendo:  "First, your full-priced games have to FLOP!  You'll be so proud when you can finally add these new special stickers!"

WHAT A GREAT PRECEDENT THIS SETS.  YOU'RE SO SMART, VIDEO GAME COMPANIES

Sorry, it's not a 3rd party flop.

And besides, Excitebots should be discounted first seeing as it barely hit 100k in NA.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJanuary 21, 2010

Nintendo would rather discontinue it than drop the price.

Captain always goes down with the ship.

If those titles are what would be available here, the only one I'd get is Tales of Symphonia.

StratosJanuary 22, 2010

What's 428? Is that Madworld in Japan?

Imagine the games we could possibly push through for a second chance. I would love something like this to come stateside.

It is basically a visual novel adventure game. There are some protaginists and how they interact in the game can affect the game and can have many different outcomes and endings.
You know those "choose your own adventure" books it is similar in concept to that. Check Wikipedia for a clearer understanding of the game.

StratosJanuary 22, 2010

Wait, Platinum made that game? I recall hearing about it now, but I was thrown off by Platinum having its name on it.

BeautifulShyJanuary 22, 2010

No that is the recomendation rating that it recieved on the Nintendo Channel in Japan. Platinum is the highest ranking in the Nintendo channel.

StratosJanuary 22, 2010

Oh...my bad.  :-[

BeautifulShyJanuary 22, 2010

No worries.:)

I think this is a pretty nice system that Nintendo has in place.

That game sounds pretty neat, actually. Too bad I bet it's all in Japanese. :(

Matthew²January 22, 2010

It got a perfect score from Famitsu, too. It would've been nice to see it localized, but I bet we all know how it would've done commercially.

ShyGuyJanuary 22, 2010

He's got a little 2 on the end of his username, I never even considered that as a possibility!

StratosJanuary 22, 2010

Why is everyone getting squared now?

ShyGuyJanuary 23, 2010

WTFrack happened to my username?

StratosJanuary 23, 2010

Well, you did sound like it would be a cool thing to do and I assumed you asked a mod to do it. Must be one of those 'MOD-irate pranks'.

ShyGuyJanuary 23, 2010

I don't dare logout because my keyboard doesn't have a "squared" key.

StratosJanuary 23, 2010

People actually log out? I just stay permanently logged in.

Though if it did happen I suppose you could look on your public profile and copy-paste your name there into the username login box.

Maybe that's the idea. Maybe the Mods wanted a way to get rid of you without looking bad by banning you. :P

Tell that to the Gamecube ;)

BlackNMild2k1January 23, 2010

He said squared not cubed.

StratosJanuary 23, 2010

So that's why Nintendo was in third place last gen! Should have named it the 'GameSquare'.

You guys know your displayed name isn't the same as your log in name, right?  You don't think I'd have added the "Ultimate" if I had to type it, do you?  I still just type "PartyBear" to log in.

BlackNMild2k1January 25, 2010

I'm pretty sure he was just joking because no one actually logs out of NWR. EVER.

Mop it upJanuary 26, 2010

I log out every time I leave, mostly because I use a shared Internet connection.

But in order to do that they would have had to design the system to be two-dimensional. The will is kinda like that because it is pretty thin, but it isn't exactly square in shape. More like a rectangle.

Nintendo could have named the Wii the "Gamerectangle"

Mop it upJanuary 26, 2010

The GameCube is not actually a cube, but is actually a rectangular prism. I suppose "GameRectangularPrism" doesn't have the same ring to it, though.

Starcube. They should have named it the Starcube.

And the disc drive cover should have been cut in the shape of a star that flashed different colors when you opened it up while playing the 'Mario Starman' music. I'd have gotten a kick out of that. Now where's my modified gamecube version of this idea?

KDR_11kJanuary 26, 2010

Which Mario starman music? Lately they seem to be favoring the Yoshi's Island one.

StratosJanuary 26, 2010

I had the classic tune in my mind for that.
