Rockstar’s drug-addled masterpiece achieves a rare feat.

The Japanese version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be the first DS title to carry the CERO Z rating for adult content. Even though all GTA titles have been rated Z in Japan, this is only the second title on a Nintendo console to receive the rating. The first was Capcom and Suda 51’s Killer 7, which debuted on the GameCube.

Chinatown Wars will be published by Cyberfront, known for publishing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV and the Princess Maker series.

Talkback

Capcom usually publishes the GTA series in Japan; I wonder if they passed on Chinatown Wars due to poor sales in America?

Rated Z for zombies. Are there 26 rating levels in Japan?

I honestly didn't even know the series was being released in Japan, considering how American the game is.

I wonder how the reception for GTA is in Japan...

GTA and Princess Maker...yes, that makes perfect sense. Whatever sells, I guess.  ;D

They actually do pretty good in Japan. The PS2 version of GTA III sold about 360K copies, GTA: VC sold about 410K copies. GTA: SA sold about 227K copies its first week, GTA IV solf about 160K its first week. Not earth shattering, but pretty good a such a western game.

Food for thought - would this game have received the "Z" rating if it was on another system?

PeachylalaJuly 10, 2009

Answer: maybe not.

CERO's rating system is different from the ERSB and whatever the hell Europe uses, but not by a whole lot. Can anyone confirm if the GTAs on the consoles get the "Z" rating from CERO?

According to the box art posted on GameFAQs, they all did.

All GTA games in Japan are Z rated. GTA4 on PC has a huge ass red warning sticker that covers at least 1/4th of the box.  NTSC-JP GTA 4 PC
