The Sega sports game will be the first Wii title to support Nintendo's improved motion controls.

Just a few days after Nintendo announced the release date and final price of Wii MotionPlus, Sega has officially announced the release of Virtua Tennis 2009 alongside a series of MotionPlus-related firsts. It will be the first game to be released – first or third-party – to support the new technology, and it will also be the first MotionPlus-enhanced tennis title (EA’s Grand Slam Tennis follows this summer). Like EA’s tennis title, Virtua Tennis 2009 promises intuitive gameplay that replicates the motions of a tennis racket in real time, such as lobs and splice shots.

SAN FRANCISCO (April 14, 2009) – SEGA® of America, Inc. today announced that Virtua Tennis 2009 will support the new Wii MotionPlus feature. This means that for the first time Nintendo Wii™ system owners will be able to experience the thrill of real tennis by holding the Wii Remote™ like a tennis racket. The Wii MotionPlus feature will let players hit left and right by swinging the Wii Remote in that direction. Performing lobs and slice shots is as simple as mimicking the real-life technique.

Virtua Tennis 2009 is due for release on next generation consoles spring 2009. Further information relating to the content of the game will be available over the coming months from the official website of the game – www.virtuatennis2009.com.

Talkback

Talk about being early to the party! :p

I am now curious to see which Tennis game will control more effectively. If the rumors are to be believed Motion Plus should make both games control incredibly well.

Does either game have a create-a-character option?

No idea. I think both games will place emphasis on their cover athletes, but the EA game might have a create a player option since many of their older games included that.

Create-a-Daisy

2009 = Year of the tennis game. I can't even think of any other tennis game on Wii, and soon we'll have three.

Wii Sports Tennis is essentially an on-rails tennis game.

It's funny because it is true. :)

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterApril 16, 2009

And yet, I played Wii Tennis more than any other game on Wii.

Hey, we never said it wasn't fun. :)

Though I've always just assumed that Mario Kart Wii is everyone's most-played game, because it really should be. I'm still going to pretend that it is true.

NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 16, 2009

My most played game is probably Tales.

According to the Nintendo Channel stats Brawl, Guitar Hero 3, City Folk, Mario Kart Wii and even Call of Duty World at War are some of the most played games on the system. So your thought is quite correct.

I didn't even buy that one. It had promo art involving blue shells.

I regret buying it.  Does that count?

Lies. All of you. Liars. I don't believe a word of it!
