The second game in the Nintendo boxing franchise is coming to Virtual Console in advance of its Wii sequel's May release.

According to IGN, the 1994 Super Nintendo sequel to the NES' Punch-Out!!, Super Punch-Out!!, is hitting Virtual Console next week. This isn't too unexpected in the light of the franchise's upcoming return this May with the release of Punch-Out!! on the Wii, developed by Next Level Games.

The original game in the series came out on Virtual Console in the middle of 2007. In 2005, Super Punch-Out!! was featured as an unlockable in the GameCube version of EA's Fight Night Round 3.

There was no specific pricing news, but the game is likely to be priced at the SNES standard of 800 Wii Points ($8).

FINALLY! I've been waiting for this one. I can't wait to install it onto my SD Card.  ;D

Well I have to get more Wii points now... oh wait I mean Nintendo points.

Aw skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet skeet.

I think that was my exact reaction when I found this.

I've been staring at my 800 point balance for days now, wondering if I should buy something.

Really glad I didn't.

Not too shocking since the new one is coming out so soon.  Either way, it's a truly awesome game however, and I'm certain it will earn a Recommended for Everyone rating.  Of course, I still have the original so no need to buy it again for me!

My original copy's battery died :( I know it's easy to fix, but for the Punch-Out!!-loving college student on the go, wielding a SNES at all times isn't realistic.

On another VC related note, I'm more than willing to double dip on NES games, especially after my last experience with my NES that involved a small skirmish just to get the damn thing to not blink.

Man I love this game. I won't be buying the VC version since I've had the game since it came out on the SNES, but all of you who don't should definitely check this one out.

This is one of my favorite SNES games.  As much as I like the original, the sequel is easily 10 times better.  I don't remember it causing that much of a splash when it was first released.  (Then again, that was pre-Internet, so it could have just be in my circle of friends.)

I'll be picking it up again because $8 is a fair price for me not to have to unpack my SNES and find my original cartridge.

Hmm, I only have 300 points and no money to buy more points. Thankfully Nintendo has not taken down any VC games, so it will still be there in the future,

I think I beat the first round of boxers in this game, but that's as far as I ever got. It isn't as difficult as the NES version but it is still too much for me. It's a great game though for anyone looking for a tough... fighting game?

I've never played the SNES one, but my 800 points are ready to go.

Is it too late to push aside Secret of Mana and use Super Punch-Out as the next RetroActive title?  I can almost certainly guarantee that the interest is there and it won't be nearly as much fun doing it in a few weeks (if we're stuck going through the traditional round of voting) because half the people who would participate would have already downloaded and played the title.

Too late, but I'm not sure that this kind of game would make for a good RA discussion.  Anyway, we're sticking to the democratic process.  ;-)

Anyone up for creating a Super Punch Out Time Attack sticky thread now that its out on the VC?  We could post the 3 best times or so on each fighter.  Forum members could send in a pic to validate their time.

I nominate you.  Also, I fully endorse this idea.

Can I play the cart I have for SNES and use game genie? If so I'm in!

I never have either.  I believe that I dismissed this game back in the day because it didn't have Mike Tyson.  Ah, the misspent days of my youth.

What I'm most proud of is that I actually counted the correct number of "skeets" used in the song.  I believe it's six, and then he repeats it.  I don't know what that says about me - probably several things on several levels - but it's the truth.

If no one else will, I will.  It'll be my first sticky, so it may look like @ss.
