Dead Rising Receiving a Wii Port

Photograph the unfolding horror at the Willamette Mall while beating zombies to a second death with anything you can get your hands on, now using the Wii Remote.

Though E3 is tearing up America this week, on the other side of the world Famitsu Weekly has revealed a Wii port of Capcom's acclaimed Xbox 360 horror title, Dead Rising. The Wii version is currently about 40% complete and is mostly unchanged from the 360 original. The only major gameplay modifications being made are in the game's controls.

Dead Rising will utilize the Wii Remote in much the same way as previous ports of titles from other systems; players will now use the pointer functionality to aim Frank West's camera along with any of the guns he acquires. The sniper rifle will require players to move the view in broad strokes with the control stick on the Nunchuk, while a simple shake will reload ammunition. Swinging the Wii Remote will be used to control the baseball bat and chainsaw. Finally, when players are attacked by zombies, they can literally shake them off with a gesture of the Wii Remote.

The game will be titled Dead Rising: Zombie no Ikenie (meaning "Zombie Sacrifice") in Japan. There is currently no word on a launch date, or the prospect of a release outside of Japan.

Hopefully this game will prove the Wii can handle the same games the 360 and PS3 can which will open the door to more multi-platform titles in addition to the expected exclusives. The majority of the 360/PS3's extra power goes to HD graphics anyway. So taking away the HD and maybe lowering the textures and polygon count a little if necessary should make this and any other title playable on the Wii with the unique controls making up for the compromised graphics which won't even be all that noticeable on a standard television.

I see no reason RE5 can't appear on the Wii as well. It's really nothing but RE4 with HD graphics.

Don't count on it. Dead Rising has fairly large environments capable of having at least a hundred zombies on screen at once without slowdown from what I remember. So even considering it will be low-res, I'm pretty certain that unless they really push the Wii hardware, which at this point in it's lifespan and considering the philosophy of developers to just shove some Wii controls in a game and expecting it to sell, I wouldn't assume the game will look and perform graphically close.

Dead Rising wasn't a particularly beautiful or detailed game. The Wii is more than capable of handling MANY zombies on the screen at once. Remember, Nintendo had the Gamecube doing such things before it even released. Given that the Wii happens to be even stronger, there is no reason why this can't be accomplished.

The only thing that can hold this game back from looking and playing exactly like the 360 version is laziness on the part of Capcom.

Some of the screen shots from Famitsu have quite a few enemies on-screen (particularly the one with the chain saw on the first page).  However, since I'm not overly familiar with the original, I can't say how it compares.

ShyGuyJuly 17, 2008

I count about twenty zombies in one screen.

I knew you would bring up the GameCube, and probably be referring to Pikmin in particular. Pikmin 1&2 did have over 100 characters on screen at once, however the Pikmin models appeared to be relatively basic in comparison.

Here are some examples of how many characters can be on screen at once while shooting, driving, and slicing zombies, while still maintaining a smooth framerate (most of the time) in the Xbox 360 version.

ya... I'm not so sure Capcom at least will put that kind of effort in. But we'll see I guess!

They also did 128 Mario models. Considering the Wii is more powerful particularly in the processing department, it should be able to do this.

Capcom could do it. Even those screenshots don't look impossible, Tuxedo Bond. Good skinning can easily negate notice of low poly models. Furthermore, coding in a progressive, distance-based level of detail would hardly be a big deal and have been used in games for over a decade now.

Besides, any game engine designed with displaying many characters on screen at once will most likely be properly coded to do so. Look at Serious Sam. That game still looks pretty good today, yet would easily run on even modest systems back when it was initially released. You could always expect to see tons of enemies at any given time, all in ridiculously wide-open areas.

They could do the things you mentioned, but it wouldn't be visually exactly the same anymore.

Nintendo ON could have done it

Earth Defense Force had craptons of giant enemies on the freaking PS2.

The Dynasty Warrior games even pushes quite a few characters at once.

Half a world away, the Wii gets a hardcore next-gen game.

Performance issues are a concern, but if they pull it off this will be pretty cool.

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusJuly 18, 2008

Thinking back to when I played this, the AI was thick and it wasn't only the zombies. The Zombies had a surprisingly small aggression radius and didn't move much outside of that. The survivors were legally blind with no peripheral vision and were very generous with friendly fire, especially if given a shotgun. At this point I doubt CPU power is going to hold back the Wii version of the game.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJuly 18, 2008

graphics are "serviceable"

"good enough"

ThePermJuly 19, 2008

yeah, the mario 128 demo..that was alot of marios on screen, and those were some pretty decently polygoned characters.

Sprites! Sprites! They'd never do it, but I would....  WiiWare Title , Undead Uprising

UltimatePartyBearJuly 21, 2008

I'm pretty sure I played this game when it was called Robotron.

Ian SaneJuly 21, 2008

I hope waggle controls aren't the only option.  RE4 allows multiple control options so hopefully this will support the classic controller as well.  I won't buy it if waggle is the only option.

Considering the amount of games Capcom could port to the Wii you figure they wouldn't bother with Dead Rising if the hardware couldn't handle it.  They've already gotten away with PS2 ports so if Dead Rising wasn't feasible they could just grab some other PS2 game of their's.

ThePermJuly 21, 2008

Twilight princess had bigger environments then dead rising has, and dead rising has like dreamcast character models..seriously in the beginning of the game with the girl lifts up he handto move her hair or whatever, she has like man hands, and like you can see where the textures come together poorely. For the hands what they should have done is just used a solid color and let lighting take over...

the problem with porting games is usually directors just try to move over data. dead rising looked good, but there were areas where i knew they could have done way better. Dead Rising is not a graphical gem, definitely no Gears of War, the only thing it really had going for it was the numbers of enemies on screen. I rememer the first time i saw dead rising, i wasnt impressed by the graphics at all, what really excited me though was it was basically a Dawn of the Dead video game.
