Wario and Kirby give the Wii and DS 2D platforming, Mario picks up a baseball bat, and a new puzzle game is coming to the DS.

Nintendo announced today four new titles and their upcoming release dates. Players can expect two new titles for Wii by the end of the summer as well as two new titles for DS in the same time frame.

Already announced in Japan, Wario Land: Shake It! is now officially due out in America on September 29. Mario’s rotten doppleganger is on yet another side-scrolling adventure to collect more treasure. Players will hold the Wii Remote sideways to play the game and will perform a shaking action to attack enemies, empty bags of treasure, and cause earthquakes. Each of the game's stages will provide multiple missions and will keep track of times and scores for added replay value.

Nintendo also revealed the release date of their upcoming Mario Super Sluggers title, sequel to the Gamecube’s Mario Superstar Baseball. The game will feature over 30 playable Nintendo characters from the Mario universe, as well as building on the intuitive motion controls featured in Wii Sports Baseball. Mario Super Sluggers will be available for Wii on August 25.

For the DS, Nintendo revealed the US release date of the previously announced Japanese title Kirby Super Star Ultra. The title is an updated release of the SNES classic Kirby Super Star. The game will feature updated graphics and fully rendered animated cut scenes as well as new modes such as Revenge of the King and Meta Knight Ultra. Players will also be treated to three touch screen mini games that can be played with up to three friends via the DS' Download and Play Mode. Players will even be able to use a local wireless connection to play through the adventure mode with a friend. Kirby Super Star Ultra is due out on September 29.

Finally, Nintendo revealed an all new title due out for the DS titled Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir. The title will take use of the DS touch screen to expand the play featured in the popular series from Big Fish Games. Players will seek out hidden items and point them out by simply touching them on the screen. Through the seeking puzzles, players will find the rightful heir of a left over million-dollar fortune. Mystery Case Files will also feature a first for the puzzle series: multiplayer gameplay as well as microphone support. Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir will be available on store shelves, September 8.

Nintendo’s Wario, Kirby Bring the Fun; Sleuths Get a New Mystery Case Files Game
New Experiences on the Way for Wii and Nintendo DS

REDMOND, Wash.—(BUSINESS WIRE)— While the game world awaits the E3 Media & Business Summit in Los Angeles next month, Nintendo isn’t waiting to announce new titles for its mushrooming libraries for the Wii™ console and Nintendo DS™. Classic Nintendo characters like bad-boy Wario™ and pink powerhouse Kirby® will star in their own platform games. A new Mystery Case Files™ game brings the best-selling Big Fish Games franchise to Nintendo DS for the first time. These games join the recently announced Mario™ Super Sluggers baseball game for the Wii console.

"Nintendo's game libraries continue to grow at a rapid pace," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Wario stars in a great new platformer, Kirby enthusiasts get an updated version of a fan favorite, there’s a new mystery for Mystery Case Files aficionados and baseball gets a few new Mario-style twists."

Wario Land™: Shake It!, a classic side-scroller for the Wii console launching Sept. 29, stars Wario, the smelly, bad-mannered alter ego of Mario™. With the Wii Remote™ controller turned sideways like an old-school controller, veterans and newcomers alike can run, jump and smash their way through hectic side-scrolling stages. Players shake the Wii Remote to help Wario take down his enemies, empty bags of treasure or cause earthquakes. Best of all, there are numerous stages each offering multiple missions to keep players coming back again and again to unlock everything, collect more coins or just improve their best times.

Kirby Super Star™ Ultra for Nintendo DS, launching Sept. 29, re-imagines one of the most beloved Kirby games of all time. Kirby Super Star Ultra features new graphics and fully rendered animated cut scenes. With so many adventures waiting to be unlocked, there will never be a dull moment as Kirby runs, floats, copies enemies and uses Helpers to fight King Dedede and Meta Knight. New modes like Revenge of the King and Meta Knight Ultra await, along with classics like The Great Cave Offensive and Milky Way Wishes. On top of the main modes, there are also three new touch-screen-controlled mini-games that can be played with up to three friends via DS Download Play. Not only that, but players can go on Kirby adventures with a friend via local wireless as well.

Mystery Case Files™: MillionHeir™, launching Sept. 8, uses the unique Nintendo DS interface to expand upon the seek-and-solve game play of the popular series from Big Fish Games. Players seek out cleverly hidden items in a multitude of painted scenes. Players progress through an interactive detective story investigating a cast of characters and uncovering new evidence to find the rightful heir to a million-dollar fortune. This new portable installment is available only for Nintendo DS. With interactive logic puzzles that use both the touch-screen interface and built-in microphone and include the first ever multiplayer mode for a Mystery Case Files game, Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir presents a new generation of seek-and-solve games for casual gamers and franchise fans.

Mario™ Super Sluggers, launching Aug. 25 for the Wii console, stars the ever-lovable Mario and his crew of friends. It builds on the social-gaming fun and movements people learned in Wii Sports™ and turns them into a full-fledged baseball game that can be played by every member of the household. Players make a throwing motion with the Wii Remote controller to pitch the baseball and make a swinging motion to swing at the pitch. The game boasts more than 30 playable Nintendo characters and all the madness of a Mario sports game. Just like Mario Kart® Wii, it bridges the gap between experienced players and those new to the Wii console, with fun challenges and beautiful graphics.

Kirby FTMFWin!

If Super Slugers has motion controls that WORK, I'll buy it.

Anyone else think its sad that almost two years after its launch, Wii Sports is still the best native Wii sports game?

EnnerJune 25, 2008

Well, there's the new Tiger, We Love Golf!, and other coming out. An ongoing sports bonanza!

Also, YAY! KIRBY SUPER STAR!

*sucks in Kirby Super Star*
*eats it*
*doesn't transform into a DS cartridge*
*is disappointed*

The Madden games on the Wii have been excellent and while I haven't played it I've heard good things about Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. Also, Mario Strikers Charged is some of the best multiplayer action on the Wii. So the Wii has some really good sports games.

I really hope the DS remake won't stop them from releasing the original Kirby Super Star on the VC, if it does a friend of mine will throw his Wii through a window.

Not that I've ever been expecting an epic or anything, but this has me a little concerned about the length of the game. Emphasising replay value through collecting more stuff/improving times in the PR seems like something to do in the event of there not being a whole lot of content there. Now I love a high score-type challenge as much as the next person, I would just like to see plenty of substance in the game to back it up. But I'm probably reading too much into this with my pessimistic ways in any case.

The game has something like 9 or 12 worlds (it's a power of 3, I don't remember which), and I think it's the 1-1, 1-2 format.

Once again, my memory is foggy, since I'm basing this on the article I wrote for it about a month ago.  Speaking of which, I wonder if we've updated the game profile... Yep, we did.  Somebody's on the ball!

Ian should be happy about the Kirby Super Star remake.  I know I am. :)

But it's a remake, which is an even bigger sin than a sequel.

EnnerJune 26, 2008

But it is a remake of PURE AWESOME. Such quality does not degrade, but only matures and boldens!

Smoke39June 26, 2008

I'd prefer a new Kirby game that's actually on par with Super Star than just a rehash. :/

Make up your mind Nintendo fans! Original IPs? Kirby Rehashes? Kid Icarus sequels? WHAT DO YOU WANT?!?!?!?!?

Smoke39June 26, 2008

I think it would be reasonable to say that different fans want different things.

strikers is a great game, but not one of the wii sports games... as in standing up and swinging a bat or tennis, or knocking your roommate across the face and still making a strike in bowling. you know, stuff like that.

I have to agree. I'd much rather see Super Star on VC and a new Kirby game. This just validates Nintendo & HAL have forgotten how to make a good Kirby game (see Squeak Squad), so they have to port an old game instead. Also, the updated graphics have me worried, as I thought the original had great graphics (which were pillaged for the GBA Kirby games).

I hope so too for those that don't already have Super Star.  It's the ultimate Kirby game, the one Kirby game you would bring with you to a desert island.

Since Super Mario Advance Nintendo remakes are always inferior to the originals due to two things:

1. Sh!tty voice samples
2. Lowered difficulty

They'll add extra stuff but the original SNES version will still be the better one.  They always tinker with it too far and try to modernize the game for younger audiences.  Modern game ideas applied to classic games always kills the charm.

I knew about all these games except Mystery Case Files which I have no idea what it is.  Apparently it's a "popular series".  Anyway these are the B-titles.  Nintendo still has to show us the A's.

I don't know, a new 2D Wario Land entry on a home console? That seems pretty A-List to me. I am extremely excited for it and I think it will be one of the better games we see this year.

Thank god Nintendo, among other companies, is keeping 2D gaming alive.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 26, 2008

Alive?  Destroying the industry and making it run backwards into a cactus?

Pain is proof that you're still alive.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 26, 2008

You mean attempted manslaughter by way of 360 power supply?

CalibanJune 26, 2008

A new Wario, and a remake of an old Kirby game that I never had the chance to own? Awesome.

Wario's most recent platformers are Wario World and Master of Disguise.  So yeah I think those two titles put him clearly in B-list territory until proven otherwise.  He's like Star Fox.  After a few duds he needs a big smash to put him back in the saddle.

I'm also iffy about Shake because like World and Disguise it is being farmed off to another developer.  I don't think it's a coincedence the Wario Land titles were all developed in house and were all well received and the two farmed off Wario games were considered very "meh".

It's a PC game series, stores here tend to have a few. I was expecting them to suck but GameRankings has decent scores for them so I guess they could be worth something.
