In addition to keeping track of world records, Konami also plans to support a community of registered players and host local and worldwide tournaments through the game’s website.

As New International Track and Field's June 20 release date nears, Konami has announced information about the game's online play. Coming off the heels of the original arcade game's 25th anniversary, New International Track and Field brings the competitive multiplayer franchise to the DS, getting even more competitive thanks to new online features.

Online functionality allows players connected to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to see the constantly updated World Records. You can also compete against players from all over the world, and players in Europe, Japan, Korea and the US can access a lobby area to meet up for competition in lobby areas, which Konami says is a first for DS.

Konami will even allow players to unlock new characters by registering with the game’s website. Through the site, players can form teams to collectively track scores and get their own personal forum. Finally, Konami will be holding various local and worldwide tournaments, including the coveted Konami Cup, and handing out prizes to the winners. Further details will be announced at a later date, but Konami is already planning a launch tournament with four events from the game starting June 16.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH expands online elements of New International Track and Field

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has revealed further details of the online elements of its New International Track and Field title for Nintendo DS.

Released on June 20th, New International Track and Field celebrates 25 years of the arcade classic and retains the ultra competitive multiplayer game play that made the original such a success. Utilising the handheld’s touch-screen and stylus, 24 athletic events await, spanning the 100m sprint, high jump, long jump, through to archery and skeet shooting, pole vaulting, javelin and rowing, amongst many others.

With competition at the heart of New International Track and Field, the European developed game offers a stunning online element that throws it open to players all over the globe. Using the Nintendo DS Wi-Fi connection, players can link into a server that constantly updates the World Records as and when they are broken. Global high scores and world rankings are instantly logged and players are kept updated via an innovative News Feed service and regular messaging. Likewise, it is also possible for friends to send predefined messages to each other, ranging from congratulations to taunts when a record is smashed!

The online service is further extended with players unlocking new characters by registering on the official site www.newtrackandfield.com, while Community Trophies and various rewards are detailed to visitors of the site. Similarly, New International Track and Field also allows up to four players anywhere in the world to get together and compete. Players in Europe, Japan, Korea and the US can find each other in lobby areas, and take each other on in real time – an absolute first for any DS title.

Konami has also announced it is to host a series of official local and worldwide tournaments after the game’s launch. Shortly after release, visitors to the official site will be invited to compete in the Konami Cup with their results used to determine the world’s greatest DS athletes and great prizes up for grabs. Full details of these will be confirmed shortly.

Talkback

That integrated website is actually pretty snazzy.

It's in stores here BTW, I'll avoid it though. Track and Field has claimed enough joysticks on the C64 already, no reason to destroy my DS for it.

ShyGuyJune 13, 2008

This is the one that has Pyramid Head, right?

KDR_11kJune 13, 2008

I think so (the character bio on the website cals him a "sore loser"...). It also has Sparkster, Power Pro-kun, Solid Snake, Frogger and Simon Belmont. Sadly no moais (seriously, how can you have a Konami character mash-up without a moai?).

LuigiHannJune 13, 2008

I bet there are moai in the backgrounds.

KDR_11kJune 13, 2008

Probably but it's just not as funny as a moai pole-vaulting...

Hmmmm, I am suddenly interested in this game.  And I can play it on my already beat up and scratched DS phat so I won't have to stress about it.  My Cobalt DS Lite can remain pristine  :)
