Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff is slated to hit stores this Fall.

While a new Tecmo Bowl game has been in the works since last year, today marks the official confirmation that the series is coming out for the Nintendo DS. The new game, entitled Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff, promises to be in the same vein as the perennial classic Tecmo Super Bowl. The game will most likely not use real NFL teams and players because of EA Sports’ exclusive deal with the NFL, but will instead offer the ability to customize your own team. The controls will make use of the touch screen, and Tecmo also promises online play.

Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff is scheduled to be released in Fall 2008. Tecmo’s released feature list is as follows:

· Customizable Teams: Choose team colors, emblems, player names, team cities and abilities.

· Super Abilities: Tactically use over-the-top plays to take over a game.

· Wi-Fi and Wireless Multiplayer: Play against friends across the country or across the room.

· Stylus Control: Feel the action by using the stylus to control your player.

· Variety of Teams: Choose from 32 different teams.

· Cut-Scenes: All-new cut-scenes showing off the dramatic presentation of various plays.

· Customizable Playbook: Prepare for gridiron greatness by customizing your playbook.

· Music and Sound Effects: Turn up the heat on your opponent as you play the game to rock ‘n’ roll remixes of the most memorable tunes in football gaming history!

So here's the DS announcement, where's the Wii one?

Whoa! It has Music and Sound Effects!  What a feature! :)

I wonder if they'll do the old trick where the teams are named Green Bay, Chicago, New England, etc. and just by pure coincedence have the same colours as the Packers, Bears and Patriots.  It does seem rather coincidental that their are 32 "fictional" teams here.  Just the exact amount of NFL teams. ;)

Though I always wonder why games using "fictional" teams stop at the NFL.  Why not throw in CFL and NCAA teams too?  Make the ultimate fantasy football game.  The Fire Pro Wrestling of football.

I am a huge Tecmo Bowl fan and I wish I could be excited about this, but this feels like one of those situations where the game has been out for so long and it is so great that the sequel can never live up to the original and even if it's a good game it will be disappointing.

I hope you can turn the super abilities off, and they better include stat tracking.  Tecmo Super Bowl is still my favorite football game of all time, it will be hard to top it.

Sadly you're probably right.  So much time has passed that today's developers don't really understand how to "make 'em like they used to".  It's a different industry making different games for a different gamer.
