Nintendo Pulls UK Wii TV Commercials

Not because of controversy, but because there's way too much demand for the console as it is.

Due to the extremely high demand for the Wii in the United Kingdom and the relative scarcity of the console, Nintendo UK has decided to pull its upcoming Wii television ads. They will be replaced with commercials for the Nintendo DS.

Nintendo realized that it would work against them to advertise a product that people probably will not be able to find during the holidays. "We have been running the campaign all year round, but we want to take a responsible stance this Christmas and not fuel demand," said a Nintendo spokesperson.

The UK shortages are in despite of Nintendo's worldwide monthly output of 1.8 million Wii consoles a month.

It's actually a pretty smart idea. Pull the ads, save the money and use it when you actually have items to sell.

In my interpretation of awesome, this would definitely be amongst it. face-icon-small-smile.gif

Just Uk or Europe? When I hear German kids not getting Wii for some reason i dont care

GoldenPhoenixDecember 07, 2007

That is hilarious, don't hear that much.

MarioDecember 07, 2007

Just UK, I hear Wii is flopping everywhere else.

Mario, hearsay is not the same as actual data. Last week, the DS and Wii had the most sales in most territories.

One-year trend for Europe:

Just like the issue of console manufacture I disagree with the general consensus. Nintendo needs more Wiis in the market to strike while the iron is hot. Failure to do so is hurting them. However, seeing as they can't get more to the stores they STILL need to keep the console fresh in people's minds.

Make the ads
Show the ads
Hype the Wii

Nintendo should just start advertising third-party games with all that time and money.

I am pretty confident Mario was being sarcastic.

They should replace them with an old Super Nintendo advert just to confuse everyone. People will be camping outside pawn shops and selling them on eBay for massive profit. "Only slightly yellowed with age! L@@K buy now!"

BranDonk KongDecember 08, 2007

Nintendo would have a crapload more money if they didn't spend any money advertising the Wii ever since launch day(s), and they'd still be number one.

Infernal MonkeyDecember 08, 2007

They'd have a crap load more money if they actually advertised any of their games other than Wii Sports. Maybe. I dunno.
