Wii Outselling PlayStation 3 2-to-1 in Japan

Nintendo's console lead in Japan isn't growing as fast as it used to. But it's still growing.

The Wii is still dominating the Japanese hardware sales charts, but not with the ferocity that it was at its launch a year ago.

Enterbrain, publisher of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu Weekly and independent tracker of game sales data, said that the Wii sold 110,415 units in the month of October. Its nearest competitor, the PlayStation 3, sold 47,183 units in the same time period. This means that the Wii is currently outselling the PS3 a rate of more than 2-to-1 in Japan.

Earlier this year, the Wii was outselling the PS3 at a rate of as high as 6-to-1. Comparison of these numbers would offer the impression that the Wii's lead over the PS3 in Japan is “shrinking," as many other publications have reported. This is incorrect; the Wii's rate of growth is merely slowing. Until PlayStation 3 sales surpass those of the Wii in a given month, the Wii will only continue to run away with the market leadership without fear of being overtaken.

Even if the PS3 manages to top the Wii for a few months, Sony has a long way to go to reclaim Japan. Sony has sold approximately 1.3 million PS3s there, while the Wii has triple that: nearly 3.7 million.

Now that is setting the record straight.
The SDF's plan has been thwarted yet again.

I still say the Wii will soon flop when compared to the DS. The way I see it Nintendo has created their own worst enemy.

Man the Wii doesn't SLAUGHTER the competition in sales but is still number one and people act as if the sky is falling.

That's about right, especially when the DS has to be seen as the current true PS2 successor in Japan based on franchise movement and where all the smaller companies are headed.

At first I read this headline as Wii Outselling PlayStation 32-to-1 in Japan.

Nintendo going 3rd party confirmed.

Nintendo wants you to play Wii at home and DS when not at home. That leaves few other places to compete with yourself!

Sapce. No one's got space covered. And underwater.

Don't forget that the PSP actually sold better than the DS for a good part of it's first year in Japan. It wasn't until titles like Nintendogs and Brain Age came out that the DS became the unstoppable machine it's become.

AdrockNovember 03, 2007

Yeah.... how did this fool anyone? If Nintendo is still outselling Sony, their lead is still growing, just not as fast as it was earlier this year.

Wii Fit and Brawl are going to make it really hard for anyone to get a leg up on Nintendo in Japan in the coming months. MGS4, arguably PS3's biggest title, just got delayed again to Q2.

th only thing that bothers me is the fact that it takes 2 wiis to make the price of a PS3 PS3 is more money than the wii

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 04, 2007

And yet, Nintendo is still making more money. face-icon-small-wink.gif

A higher price does not directly translate into a higher profit.

Isn't that false now? I thought the $400 model came out in Japan.

This couldn't be further from the truth. I don't know the manufacturing costs of the PS3 but Sony isn't making money off the system that's for sure.

Nintendo is the only hardware company as of late to ever either 1) break even on their hardware sales or 2) turn a profit on their hardware sales.

Not to mention Nintendo is laughing their butts off because they now dwarf Sony in Japan all because of the Wii and DS!
