Metroid Prime 3 Prompts System Update

Actually playing the game won't be the first thing you do when you put the disc in your Wii.

There are probably plenty of people out there putting Metroid Prime 3: Corruption into their Wii for the first time and noticing a strange message. The first time you go to the disc channel a message will come up asking you to install a system update directly from the disc before playing. Thankfully this update happens very quickly so it won't delay the experience too much.

It's currently unclear what the update does exactly. There could be new Prime specific features or this could just be a way of getting already released system updates out to the people that don't have their Wii connected to the internet. We'll bring you any new details that come up as we become aware of them.

Talkback

It's meant to CORRUPT your Wii.

Hypermode allows it to toast bread. Try it.

Bill AurionAugust 28, 2007

Wow! I toasted my bread! Too bad it's all blue and inedible, but it works!

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 28, 2007

The Chozo refer to it as "Worm Bread".

TanookisuitAugust 28, 2007

It's Prime-specfic. My system was already fully updated.

They took out the fetch quest.

They put IN the fetch quest. In Zelda. And Excite Truck. And all Wii games. That's the update.

king of snakeAugust 28, 2007

What's worrisome is that mine said "Wii update failed" until I tried it a second time. If this update is stored on the disk, there should be no room for errors. My Wii was fully up to date prior to this as well.

That doesn't necessarily prove this is Prime-specific... It might have just checked, saw your system was up to date, and quit.

DrydenAugust 28, 2007

It seems highly, highly likely that the update, which is only necessary for Wiis that play Metroid, is to enable the achievement tokens to be passed around through the message centre. (Read up on your Metroid previews if you have no idea what I'm talking about).

Since Metroid fans are the only one getting it, I'm assuming it's for Prime only online features, right?

Oh, and Super Paper Mario, which is famous for having an update on it, doesn't run an update screen if your Wii is up to date - so Metroid didn't just 'check' - it's for Metroid specifically. Unless Nintendo is going backwards with their system updates.

Confirmed: Only fans of Metroid are getting the update, if you are not a fan and bought the game you will not get this update.

Bill AurionAugust 28, 2007

Ahaha, I'm glad I got the update...It proves I'm a fan! =D

another reason why it sucks roflmao thread trolled.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusAugust 28, 2007

Or maybe its a way of Nintendo to prevent possible firmware spoofs?

sycomonkeyAugust 28, 2007

So I missed a plane I was taking to Georgia, but my luggage with my Wii did get on the plane. Which means that, even assuming I could find a copy of it (having forgotten to preorder), I can't play it because my Wii is 2000 miles away.

This sucks.

that Baby guyAugust 28, 2007

It's pretty obvious that this update makes us compatible with Robot-1X.

Those new 1X robots are great. I love the 1X robot!

NeoThunderAugust 28, 2007

maybe it's something deeper...

maybe it's a way for all wii's connected to the internet to send a message to nintendo saying that Wii bought metroid prime 3.

Using this and the total sales of copies sold. nintendo can determain the ratio of non-internet connected copies sold as compaired to internet connected copies sold.

Perhaps to determain how much of an impact their metroid preview channel had.

Oh my, so witty.

BranDonk KongAugust 28, 2007

It has to do with the achievement tokens, there's nothing else it could be for really. You'll have to update the system if you rent or borrow it as well, or just play it on your console once, so it would be incredibly inaccurate to use for counting sales.

Aren't you funny, I see your contributions to the boards hasn't changed much.

KDR_11kAugust 28, 2007

Probably just a measure to brick the Wiis of anyone who may have imported the game.

That's assuming there's a way to play imports (before a software update wipes it from the known universe)?

KDR_11kAugust 28, 2007

There used to be a trick that involved ejecting the disc while the loading anim played or something.

This is true, but even a rent means you were interested in the game. If it were to show 75% of sales were to people that had their wii's connected to the internet. Nintendo I think would be real interested in doing more game preview channels then

planetidiotAugust 29, 2007

Sounds like they're pulling a Sony. Here's a new update, with some new features and oh, by the way, we just locked out homebrew.

NeoThunderAugust 29, 2007

k, I think it enables you to see who on your friends list has metroid prime 3 so you know who you can send wiiconnect24 stuff to and who not to cause they don't have the game.

Well Sony does lock out loads of legitimate homebrew. I don't know what the status is/was of homebrew on the wii/gamecube, but it seems like they're getting everyone used to the idea of constant firmware updates.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorAugust 29, 2007

There really isn't anything wrong with companies keeping people from stealing from them.

nickmitchAugust 29, 2007

Sony locks out Homebrew because most people use it to play SNES games.

MashiroAugust 29, 2007

I still say that was the funniest thing about PSP.

Me - "So why did you get a PSP?"

Friends at College - "Cause you can play all the old SNES Games!"

oh the irony.

Yeah. If by "homebrew" you mean games imported from regions where they aren't overpriced by 50% and delayed by half a year.

There's so much wrong with this statement I won't even try.

People can't steal games when they're dead. Is that so wrong?

Hah.

How bout this one...

"There really isn't anything wrong with planetidiot keeping people from stealing from him."

Is there a lot wrong with that statement too?

KDR_11kAugust 30, 2007

Oh boy, I'm sure stealing SOOOOOO much money from Nintendo by buying their games where they demand less money for them! In fact I'm probably stealing even more by waiting for games to reach the bargain bin and worst of all THERE ARE GAMES I DON'T EVEN BUY! OMG!!!!!

Oh for the love of eff.

1) Copying software may be illegal, but it is not "stealing".
2) They aren't stopping anyone from "stealing".

Pirates will find a way to copy software regardless of all the DRM, firmware updates and other nonsense a company can come up with. Computers run code. Code must be read to be run. If the code can be read, the code can be written. This is called "copying". End of story.

All these tactics do is annoy legitimate customers.

Nintendo hasn't been bad about it in the past, but this relatively recent burst of mysterious mandatory updates is troubling.

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorAugust 31, 2007

Some DRM annoys legitimate customers. This isn't DRM in the vein of iTunes where there are legitimate uses for the product outside of Apple's software. This isn't the PC industry where people have so much more control over the machines the games are running on. This is them keeping people from modifying consoles in a way that could allow them to play completely pirated games without really taking any legitimate use away from people. No, sending your VC games to all your friends is NOT a legitimate use.

Nintendo doesn't want you to mess with their hardware. Remember what happened to the dreamcast who took the "don't really care" approach? You are kidding yourself thinking that it's your right.

The only people I feel sorry for are the people who live in regions where game releases suck, like KDR. It would be nice if Nintendo made their titles region free. That's what you should fight for, not for the right to modify your software for 'homebrew'. It's ridiculous how many people use that term as a defense. Only a TINY percentage of them actually make their own games or play games made by other people. I know KDR is one of them who does, but that doesn't make it the rule.

AND ME.

I wont go down the homebrew route, but Nintendo won't make it region free because it would show how useless NoE really is. The occasional rewards (Mario Strikers) for being here is cancelled out by everything else (Animal Crossing, Smash Bros Brawl, Metroid Prime and Corruption, Paper Mario).

I think its down to Nintendo ultimately being money hungry. Games here are £35, about $70. Unlocking it would encourage an amount of people to import, which means less money to the European side and NoA would look like its doing so much better.
