Pokemon Trainer Revealed As New Brawl Character

The newest playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is Ash...or whatever you named him in the Pokemon games.

The newest character in SSB Brawl is... Pokemon Trainer! This nameless trainer hangs around in the background, controlling one of three Pokemon who actually do the fighting for him. Pokemon Trainer always has access to Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard, who share the same damage percentage. You rotate through them by using Pokemon Trainer's "Down" special attack.

Note that each of these three Pokemon is at a different stage of evolution, perhaps indicating that Squirtle is the weakest and Charizard the strongest. However, Pokemon Trainer is balanced so that you can't just pound away with the strongest one all the time. The three Pokemon have a stamina characteristic (apparently conveyed through animations) which goes down when a single Pokemon is used too much or when Pokemon Trainer rotates through them too frequently. Loss of stamina seems to affect the Pokemon's effectiveness in battle.

It is highly likely that each of the Trainer's three Pokemon will have different special attacks, making this character a more complex version of the Zelda/Sheik mechanic from Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Talkback

I just want to note that I predicted this character months ago on RFN. Now we'll have to see whether he has the special move I proposed... to capture your opponents in Pokeballs and unleash their involuntary attacks elsewhere on the battlefield. It seems unlikely given his position in the background; I doubt he'll be able to do anything himself except rotate through the starter Pokemon.

oh my god...

I wonder if the Final Smash will be some sort of Pokemon evolution.

So Pikachu can be his own man in SSBB but Squirtle is a slave? RACISM.

MashiroAugust 12, 2007

Charizard confirms Ridley as a playable character.

Word.

seconded.

MashiroAugust 12, 2007

Pikachu had the guts to REFUSE to go into the pokeball.

He fought the man and earned the right to be free!

that Baby guyAugust 12, 2007

And Squirtle was the leader of a criminal gang. Who's more hardcore?

MashiroAugust 12, 2007

He submitted to being a slave. He was just a wanna-be after all. Sorry =/

that Baby guyAugust 12, 2007

No, he had free will the whole time. He chose to help out Officer Jenny by fighting fires. He decided to help Ash's journey, and you don't want to know what he decided to do to yo' mama last night.

MashiroAugust 12, 2007

Wait wait . . . what's that?

It's the sound of Squirtle being switched out for Ivysaur while Pikachu stays on the battle field.

All I'm saying is that you shouldn't drop the soap. I hear the Squirtle Squad had quite a reputation during their time in prison.

DAaaMan64August 12, 2007

That isn't ash, it's Red, thats his actually name face-icon-small-smile.gif

I think this is pretty cool

WPack911August 12, 2007

I think the ultimate final smash this guy could have is to have all 3 come out at the same time and have Squirtle do Hydro Pump, Ivysaur do Solar Beam and Charizard do Fire Blast, together pretty much hitting everything on screen. That would be total ownage indeed.

KDR_11kAugust 13, 2007

Or he calls a legendary bird depending on which pokemon you have on the field.

TanookisuitAugust 13, 2007

Neat!

18 DaysAugust 13, 2007

I can confirmt aht his final smash involves him catching an opponent in a Pokéball and simply turning around and tossing them off the back of the arena. OHKO.

pSYCO-gAMER321August 13, 2007

Ha ha, Red has been confirmed! Wait a minute! That means that the color change will have Blue. Hmm... Yellow and Green as a possible show?

Dozy BoyAugust 13, 2007

Where does he stand when everybody is flying around Delfino?

He probably rides a flying-type pokemon.

He should still be on the flying platform, just in the background.

theratAugust 13, 2007

id rather him do his fighting directly. i like the normal sized human fighters. oh well! still pretty intresting

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorAugust 13, 2007

Very interesting...

Dozy BoyAugust 13, 2007

When Squirtle throws a pokeball item, a pokemon trainer should pop out.

Ian SaneAugust 13, 2007

They're not going to call him "Pokemon Trainer" are they? They should just call him Ash since probably everyone is somewhat familiar with the Pokemon TV show.

It's a really cool character idea.

Maybe there will be multiple trainers.

Technically, they should call him Red after the original game, but then, as has been noted, changing Red into blue clothes would be kind of weird!

Jeez, the writers on a Nintendo site don't even know Red when they see him. Shameful.

I would like to encourage members of this fine establishment to go to smashboards.com and see the tourney...fans flip out over this announcement. "Banned from tournament play." They hate the best announcement ever. Man, that's nuts.

Team (color) costumes (instead of the alternate colors) should get you the other game trainers. I expect at least one of the female trainers from the game. I hope we get Pokéball Ocelot. Really, I don't want to see Red wearing a colored bowtie.

Well, Pokemon Trainer appears to be his character name... =3

And what in the world could "pros" have against Pokemon Trainer?

I like this idea best so far of the Final Smashes, as it presents three different FS attacks depending on your character out at the time. It would be easy to tie each to a character too:

Squirtle = Articuno
Ivysaur = Zapdos
Charizard = Moltres

DarkheartAugust 13, 2007

Anyone else getting the creepy stalker vibe of the trainer in the screenshots..... He is always just standing there off in the distance. . . just STARING~!

I'd post some of the highlights from smashboards, but I'd probably get banned. There are, however, threats to Sakurai's family.

MashiroAugust 13, 2007

Screw them.

What do they know about how the game is balanced holy god someone should tell them to learn to have fun.

Just for them being stupid PoS idiot gamers I'm going to just pray that they allow PKMN Trainer in tournaments, because I'll freaking train with em and goto them and kick all their sorry asses.

YOU KNOW WHY!?

Because . . . I'm gonna be, the very best. Like no one ever wa....

Sorry.

SAKURAAAAAAIIIIIII!

Bill AurionAugust 13, 2007

It's rather ironic that they consider themselves "Smash Brothers fans" then, eh?

"Squirtle = Articuno
Ivysaur = Zapdos
Charizard = Moltres"

Then they'd have to take them out of normal Poke Balls, which I don't approve of! =(

PaleMike Gamin, Contributing EditorAugust 13, 2007

Well this is the third character to be added to my potential first play list...

Man...

Pit, Zelda, or Trainer?

Smash_BrotherAugust 13, 2007

I can't wait to go online with everyone so I can SHOW YOU MY POKEMANS!!!!

Correct.

Observe the Delfino platform in this movie. It has a section to the back of it which is more than likely there for the PT to stand on.

Now, where he'll stand on Eldin Bridge is anyone's guess. Maybe on the cliff in the background? Also, in the FE level, I wonder if he'll also drop down through the stage when all the players fall into the underground.

I'll have to play as this character on every stage just to see how he works. I'm guessing the floating platform for him to stand on theory makes the most sense.

Bill AurionAugust 13, 2007

"Now, where he'll stand on Eldin Bridge is anyone's guess."

If you look in screenshots, you'll notice that the fighters are only on the front plane of the bridge, leaving plenty of room for the trainer...However, I haven't put too much though into what he will do if he happens to be there when the bridge breaks... ='D

Smash_BrotherAugust 13, 2007

I saw that as well, and I'm guessing he won't stand where the bridge can break, although it would be awesome to watch him dive and grab for a ledge when the bridge breaks.

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterAugust 13, 2007

If they made it so that the Pokemon Trainer reacts to whatever is going on in the background it would be proof of how dedicated the Brawl team is. But in reality I see them giving the trainer a floating platform.

UltimatePartyBearAugust 13, 2007

I don't know if they will give him a floating platform, actually. That was the assumption for the scrolling Rumble Falls stage, too, but upon closer inspection, I think this looks like Rumble Falls.

KBKoopaAugust 13, 2007

This is indeed awesome. All they need now is a clone character (a la Falco, Ganondorf, Pichu etc) of a Team Rocket grunt, who has his own array of similar Pokémon. Perhaps Golbat, Sandslash and Koffing.
