Viva Piñata Coming to DS

The Xbox 360's critically acclaimed garden simulator is coming to Nintendo's handheld.

Though the original Viva Piñata didn't sell very well, Microsoft seems intent on making it a staple franchise, announcing a spin-off of sorts in Viva Piñata: Party Animals at E3, curiously not developed by Rare, but by Krome Studios. Though it seemed odd at the time that the original studio would not be heading up the project, it's now clear as to why: Rare is working on a different Viva project altogether.

According to Kotaku, a DS version has been announced at Comic-Con, and unlike the Krome effort, this sequel seems to retain the original, garden simulation gameplay of the first game. Details are scarce, with the only real information being that players will have a top-down view.

Stay tuned to Nintendo World Report for more on this game as it breaks.

Heh, I've always said that Viva Piñata would've been a neat game on the Nintendo platforms, and lo and behold!

Is a bit missing from this article?
You mention that Krome made a spin-off/sequel, and that the reason was clear. But then you don't say what the reason was, before continuing about this new DS version not by Krome.
O_o

Krome made the Xbox 360 game and the original team didn't work on it at all. Which, at the time, didn't make sense. But now it's clear why the original team didn't work on it. It's because they were working on the DS version.

Edit: Wow I'm sorry. I misread and it made sense lol.

Oy.

Wrote that in the middle of the night. Forgive me. Fixing now.

While it doesn't excite me, I'd like to point something out.

Microsoft is taking a game created by a close second party and having it retooled for the Nintendo DS.

Sounds to me like Halo DS is very possible.

Actually I think the reason is clearer then you guys are giving credit for.

Krome: Making game NOT based on the original Game canon but off of the Cartoons canon. It be like making a Pokemon game based off of what you saw in the cartoon instead of the actual games.
Rare: Is making an actual sequel appealing to an audience that already have gamers established for this genre instead of trying to bring in gamers of a genre. Thus recouping some of the lost of the original game, if their was any, and bring about better brand awareness with an older demographic who wasn't ready to make the HD Jump. Thus when the price and reliability is more favorable for adoption they will have something familiar to get them started. Genre like these are somewhat polarizing.

Makes sense there Ceric.

Ewwww....

Anyway, anyone have a tally for how many games Rare has made for the DS/GBA vs. the 360/Xbox since leaving Nintendo? Be interesting to see.

Fun fact: Viva Pinata the game was in development long before the show which was created to sell the game.

I'm pretty sure it ends with It's Mr. Pants! and Banjo Pilot on GBA.

Actually, didn't they port some of the Donkey Kong Country series? And What about Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge? They've done more than that, I think. Oh yeah, Diddy Kong Racing DS is another one they handled.

How 'bout Sabrewulf?

Five. Now on the other front they did Kameo, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Perfect Dark, Conker and Viva Pinata... So am I missing some, or is the split even at 5 to 5?

NeoThunderJuly 31, 2007

It is planned at this stage.

EDIT: Under News on the Rare site (www.rareware.com) there's more details than the Kotaku article.

The DS WiFi service also lets you send prime Piñata specimens to your friends, making the act of parading your Doenut around in a humiliating pirate outfit easier than ever.
