Details on SSB Brawl Controls

Smash attacks won't require gestural control.

Today's update to the official Smash Bros. Dojo blog gives an elementary explanation of the normal and smash attacks which have been around since the original Super Smash Bros. on N64. The interesting part is that the blog includes diagrams to show how these moves are performed on all four control schemes (Nunchuk, GameCube, Classic, Remote-Only).

When the blog first introduced these four methods of controlling the game, it gave no information on how basic elements of the game, including smash attacks, might be performed with each of them. The Remote-Only scheme was particularly mysterious, with many fans speculating that it would use some kind of motion control to execute smashes. However, this will not be the case.

With the Remote-Only scheme, the 2 button is used for normal (quick) attacks, a direction on the D-Pad with the 2 button produces a stronger attack, and a direction plus the 1 and 2 buttons simultaneously performs a smash attack. The dual button press is required for the game to tell the difference between a hard attack and a smash attack, whereas that difference is communicated through analog joystick motion in the three other control schemes.

This same blog update also confirms that charged smashes, introduced in SSB Melee, will return in Brawl. These are still based on holding the attack button during a smash attack and then releasing after a second or two. The only difference for the Remote-Only scheme is that both buttons (1 and 2) must be held and then released.

I guess this means we won't be seeing variable special attacks. For example, in Melee if you did a forward-tilt-B special attack with Samus her missile would be less powerful but slightly track enemies. If you did a forward-smash-B special her missile would go straight, faster, and have more power. There doesn't seem to be a way to do that kind of move with the remote-only setup. If you pressed both buttons it would be just like doing a smash attack...

Oh well...

Not necessarily, Mike. You could always double-tap the D-pad and hit the B button. Would work just as well that way, too.

Seeing as that is such an advanced move, it's also possible that the Wii Remote only setup will be slightly gimped. It's not like your fourth random friend who has never really played before will care if they can't make Samus's rockets go faster.

Will all 4 control methods be supported simultaneously? What if all players are required to use the same control scheme as player 1?

That's why you have your own settings tied to a name in the game Rhoq.

Oh, and I don't think I'll EVER use that wiimote only thing. Wiimote only is only good for non-games, pointer games (where oh where are our tycoon and RTS games?!?!?), VC titles, and very few titles aside.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having 4 different control set ups?

pyrokamileonJuly 05, 2007

remote-only sounds kinda cool, I really wanna try it
just think, this'll be the first time they ever let you play smash bros. with a digital d-pad, that's how I usually play Soul Calibur...

No gestural controls aye?

I guess I'll be playing with the Wavebird then...

Why would they? nintendo loves to not use anything to its fullest.... you heard, no internet play for this one either.

No one said the game lacks online play. As far as we know, it's going to have it. Metroid Prime 3 was the game just announced not to have online play.

Well I think a lot of people (myself included) love the SSBM control style and for fighting games such as this a gesture system would be tacky at best.

Also lies about no online play =P. . . I hope.

Edit: thatguy beat me to the punch yet again! My eternal rival >.

Yes, but this is Nintendo we're talking about. For every step forward they shoot themselves in the foot and take 2 steps back.

And they already did that by, uh, using WarioWare Wario instead of Warioland Wario. Yeah, that's it. That's the f*ck up for this game. So online can stay. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Amen.

I just hope to god the secret characters aren't a massive disappointment like in Melee.

pyrokamileonJuly 06, 2007

speaking of secret characters I'm sure warioland wario will be selectable in some fashion, if we're lucky though they won't waste a secret character slot and just make him one of wario's other costumes...

Yeah I stand by my comment, 4 people will be able to use 4 different control set ups if they so choose.
