PS3 HOME is 'Mii Too,' Says Nintendo

According to the Big N, they had the same idea years ago, but rejected it.

Computer and Video Games recently spoke to a representative at Nintendo to get the company's thoughts on Sony's new HOME feature for the PS3, which allows players to create virtual homes that act as a hub for online content and multiplayer gaming. Brushing it off, they responded with the following:

"This is an example of Sony's "Mii-too" approach. But as Mr. Miyamoto states, Nintendo years ago considered and rejected the type of approach Sony is now taking."

With Nintendo's Mii Channel and Sony's new HOME service, how long until Microsoft enters the fold? Stay tuned to Nintendo World Report for more GDC coverage.

Damn, never been there before, but the source, Computer and Video Games, seems to cater to a pretty anti-Nintendo crowd going from the comments:

"i sincerely think nintendo should come off thier high horse and say something sensible for once.. its run by a bunch of people that are starting to mentally degenerate, hence thier fetish for very childish games. The WII is for people who love it. what i dont understand is this bashing, making it seem as if only thier decisions are right for the gaming community. They repackage a gamecube with a motion sensing controller and call that innovative... yeah right!!! if the gaming community was under nintendo's leadership, i doubt we would experience any of the entertainment we get from the xbox360 and ps3."

In terms of this headline, though, I think Nintendo would have been better off not saying anything at all, or just stating they (Sony) seem to be taking the concept in a different direction.

To Mii, it seems like Sony's Home is an MMO-style approach to achievements. Except it seems like it's a waste of time. I bet the only thing Microsoft will do is connect with whoever owns Second Life, and extend it to the 360.

Mii's are a fun little diversion, allowing people to make caricatures of themselves and others, and then, in return, these guys pop up in games and will be used for beauty contests. It's quick and easy to make someone, and everyone enjoys looking at them, because it is a caricature. With home, you dress a person and decorate a room. Sounds like a boring mix between an MMORPG and Animal Crossing, only with minimal content. On top of that, it seems to be a quick way to try to make a buck, with the purchasable everythings they'll have there. Nintendo would have probably turned this down because it isn't really that appealing, and for those who it does appeal to, they can play WWE RAW! or something where you can customize a real-looking wrestler like yourself. Seriously, this Home stuff looks boring and stupid.

I am curious as to how those who like MMO's think about Home. Does it interest you more than it interests me?

Edit: I just watched the trailer Sony gave. They mentioned buying clothes from the store, downloading furniture from the store, downloading movies from the store, and then talked about how it had unique ways to talk using emotes.
It also seems to have had billiards, bowling, and an arcade with simple-looking games.
So let's re-cap. You get to play Bowling, you get to play billiards, you get to play some cheapish arcade games made solely so they can talk about the feature, and you get to talk to people, like Live, only now you do it in a virtual lobby. Additionally, you can also get a room to "invite people into," and let them listen to music or watch video on a private screen. Sounds more like an expensive Myspace than an MMOG, now. If I wanted Myspace, I'd go to Myspace for free, and probably would end up seeing just as many adds. That's right, Sony is going to put advertisements into the thing also.
So is anyone actually excited about this, or did Sony decide to start giving the media money hats? I mean, I saw GameSpot's review of the Sony conference, and although Sony said nothing interesting, they seemed to be talking about how it was a whole new Sony, or rather, the old Sony, which, to me, it seemed like it was the same Sony we'd been seeing, just w/o the giant crabs.

Sony is the corporate emobodiment of the term sloppy seconds

jg233March 08, 2007

Words can't describe how entirly po'ed I am at Sony. Does anyone else see that this is just a rip off of mii's with the whole "apartment" thing thrown in? When will Sony learn to not steal ideas? First it was the analog controller, then motion sensing, and now this! I truely hate Sony, the games for their system, and anyone that supports them. I am perfectly happy with my kiddy Wii as long as I have good games that can be considered artistic and innovative overthe cookie cutter sh*t that Sony is trying to shove at the world!face-icon-small-mad.gif

BigJimMarch 08, 2007

Nintendo did not invent 3D avatars, they've been around for a long time.

Home seems A LOT more like The Sims than the Mii Channel anyway.

Not really. I see this as Sony's counter to the Mii system. There's no doubt in my mind that HOME would have never come about if not for Nintendo having such huge success with Miis.

They created something in response that I wouldn't call a direct rip off of the Miis, which will probably appeal to a different audience then the Miis do... the kind who enjoy enjoy the Sims.

BloodworthDaniel Bloodworth, Staff AlumnusMarch 08, 2007

Yeah, Nintendo should have kept their mouth shut. Home may not be innovative, but it also doesn't have a darn thing to do with Miis.

mantidorMarch 08, 2007

Nintendo really didn't say it had to do with miis, is just that apparently Nintendo now thinks is perfectly ok to replace "me" for "mii" or something. Will they do that in all their press releases? its just lame.

From what I've read about this Home thing it sounds more like Animal Crossing than anything.

odifiendMarch 08, 2007

The response can be applied to more than the loose Home. These Mii-too joke must have been in the works since the last minute motion sensing crap Sony pulled...

NWR_pap64Pedro Hernandez, Contributing WriterMarch 08, 2007

I dunno...On one hand, I agree that Nintendo should've been the better man and stayed quiet.

On the other, with the crap they have been getting since the GC days, its only fair they get to throw some mud every once in a while.

AcefonduMarch 08, 2007

Home does look like the Sims. God how I hate the Sims. The Sims are agreeing with yourself that you literally have no life. I know playing video games all day proves that I have no life, but I play video games to escape what could be perceived as life.

I agree with prior posters of Nintendo should have shut up though. But GDC would have been a good opportunity for Nintendo to show off what more Mii's can do. They really need to create games that incorporate Mii's more. I'd love to see them in everything. Just think, Mii's running around on the battlefields of Medal of Honor or something.

oohhboyHong Hang Ho, Staff AlumnusMarch 08, 2007

But remember, they can't. Nintendo can't say anything big because of the stck trade.

theratMarch 08, 2007

i thought up a huge nintendo conspiracy tonight, ill write it up tomorrow... im intrested in your opinion... the idea its based around is how much control our government has over our air waves and if they stop companies from making products that work.

Home is definitely "Mii-too" How it could take Sony so long to develop such a thing is beyond me. This fall?!?!?! Sounds like they started working on it... oh... say LAST fall?

Also, Second Life is vastly overrated (though it has SOME uses for a very dedicated minority... i.e. Furries), and... well... Sony's "Home" concept simply strikes me as a convergence-synergy-multi-business-leverage-gasm with little else.

I'm not sure what Nintendo should have said instead of this, because honestly they didn't have much choice when it came to actually one upping Sony besides pot shots. Kind of sad actually, Sony's decent showing beat Nintendo by default.

NeoThunderMarch 08, 2007

PS Home.....a way to nickle and dime playstation fans

I make this prediction right now....for every single thing in this world will cost actual money. I don't understand why anyone would want this but granted, there are a lot of idiots out there and a lot of them will get into it. I could not get into this. It might be interesting for about 5 min. This will not become something great. The idea you have to "meet" at someones "house" along with games and stuff are in this world. I would say it might sound nice, but I don't think it will take off.

I concur. They've gone beyond Miis and toward the MMO world. Bashing them only highlights this.

If its preinstalled, then it can go beyond mii's

Personally game looks to 2001, no in graphic sense but in style
those old lame 3d character chat rooms, which boomed badly (even thu they lived on with 12yr olds in games like ragarnok)

Haven't you learned that there's more to a game than graphics, like say gameplay? Or even communication. Wise the hell up before you criticise.

that Baby guyMarch 09, 2007

Well, when you pay $600 for a system because it is supposed to be full of graphical prowess, I imagine you expect a little more than what that looked like. That's just me, though.

jakeOSXMarch 09, 2007

i read this and thought it sounded like animal crossing. without fishing that is.

so when animal crossing does come out with who knows what new features, i am sure we'll hear "look at nintendo ripping off sony.."

Sony and gameplay does not compute.

CericMarch 09, 2007

If Sony plans to thoroughly test and generat a lot of contents for this right out of the gates I could see it taking till Fall.

Considering the concept is newly unveiled, borrows parts from other games and is adding a lot of things to it, your comments are pretty shallow.
