Japan: Pokémon DS Sells 1.5 Million in Four Days

Holy crap.

Pokemon Pearl and Diamond for the Nintendo DS came out in Japan on September 28. Media Create is responsible for tabulating sales data in Japan, and they've updated their website reflecting the new releases.

In the four days after the pair of DS Pokémon games were released, the two combined to sell over 1.58 million units. To be exact, that's 820,047 copies of Pokémon Diamond, and 768,687 copies of Pokémon Pearl. Lumping the two back together, our math reveals that averages out to about five copies sold per second, or $725,000 worth of sales per hour. (There are a lot of hours in four days.)

We know the Japanese are crazy about the DS, and we know they've always been crazy about Pokémon. A game release which is the combination of the two shows what power Nintendo has in the Japanese marketplace. Until Nintendo announces release dates for the rest of the world, Pokémaniacs will just have wait patiently until the time is right for them to hand over their money to Nintendo and catch them all for the umpteenth time.

Respectable. When do these cross the Pacific?

Nintendo hasn't announced release dates yet. They'll probabaly show up just in time for Christmas, along with a fresh shipment of Nintendo DS Lites to sell alongside them.

Nintendo is making so much money, I think it's making me sick just thinking about it.

Where does this rank world-record wise?

1.5 million copies in 4 days? Nintendo is obviously doomed.

Games have sold faster. The good thing about Pokemon... and most Nintendo main franchise titles, is they have legs. Just look at Super Mario 64 DS.

No one likes pearls!

1.5 million in 4 days is a LOT, just about the only game series that does better that in Japan is Dragon Quest.

It really sucks that we likely won't get these until at least March, but that is also a good thing since there are so many games I already want to get this Christmas season.

Did anyone not see this coming? PGC could have written this article a month ago and still had the facts more or less right. Pokemon = $$$$$$$$$$$$.

Girls like Pearl Necklaces....

The sales numbers are pretty amazing but not a huge surprise considering how successful both the DS and the Pokemon games have been over the years.

It'd be nice if this game came out before the end of the year. But there's no way that'll happen. There's been no mention of it and honestly I didn't realize the Japanese version was coming out at this point in Japan until a couple weeks ago. If it were coming out in America before the end of the year we would already know about it and there's be a big marketing campaign behind.

Plus considering it's an RPG and RPG's are generally pretty heavy text based games, that's a whole lot of translation to be done. Not to mention that there's like, what? 400 ... million Pokemon now. That's a lot of names and information to translate.

As nintendogamecube86 mentioned, I think at the earliest we'll see them in March of 07'. Does anyone know how long it took them to bring over the previous Pokemone games from Japan? Was it 3 months? 6 months? 12 months?, etc. That'd give us a good idea of when we might see our brand new little Pocket Monsters.

I'll guess either a late Spring or early Summer launch in 2007.

JonLeungOctober 06, 2006

There are so many good DS games that came out recently or are coming out soon, not to mention the time I'll probably spend with the Wii, that for once I really wouldn't mind too much if this didn't come out 'til summer.

edgeblade69October 08, 2006

Bah, I'd be more impressed if it sold 1.5m in one day.

MarioOctober 08, 2006

They probably did all sell out in the first day.

KDR_11kOctober 09, 2006

We have no idea how many of those sales were on the first or second day, we only have the weekly total which includes two days Pkmn was released on.
