PGC Announces Its 7th Year Birthday Contest

Celebrate 7 years of PGC by entering our contest! It's over! Winners will be announced this weekend!

As everyone should know, this month marks the 7th Anniversary of Planet GameCube. We’re so excited to present to you, our dearest readers, a wonderful new contest that’s bound to blow the roof off the Internet and let the bodies hit the floor.

We here at PGC believe in the corporate ideal of empowerment. That means we let you do the work so we don’t have to! In this game, you will be empowered to come up with a photograph of your choosing. Of course, there are parameters, and I will present them to you here in a lovely, typewritten format:

Rule #1) To participate, submit a photograph of something having to do with the number seven and PGC. The number seven has a great amount of mystique surrounding it, and means many things to many people. For example, to me the number seven represents how many courses I need in a meal in order to feel sated.

Rule #2) Nothing obscene. PGC is a family website so we will not print any submissions that contain rude gestures, nudity, or any other kind of obscenity. How will we judge this? As Justice Potter Stewart said regarding pornography, “I know it when I see it."

Rule #3) The photograph must be taken by you and must be 100% real! Submitted photographs cannot be taken by some Pulitzer Prize winner nor found on the internet. For example, do not Photoshop your face on Neil Armstrong’s head with the PGC logo as the American flag. We are not MTV—we have standards.

Rule #4) No monstrously large files. Take pride and edit your work so that when I receive it, my hard drive doesn’t crash and I don't become a raving lunatic and don't get thrown in jail for about 300 human rights violations. Photographs should be of reasonable dimensions and file size.

Rule #5) Only one entry per person. You must include your real name and use a real email address so that we can contact you for shipping information if you are selected as a winner.

Winners will be decided by members of the Planet GameCube staff, whose decisions are final. By entering a submission for this contest, you confirm that you have permission to use the submitted photograph, including consent from any persons who may be depicted in the photograph, and you authorize Planet GameCube to display the photograph on this website if it is chosen as one of the winning entries. Planet GameCube staff and employees of the contest sponsors are not eligible to win. Entrants who violate the above rules may be disqualified. Open to our readers worldwide. Neither Planet GameCube nor the contest sponsors can be held responsible for electrical incompatibilities, regional encoding, or other complications with the prizes being used outside the United States.

Email your entry to contest@planetgamecube.com. The deadline for submission is 11:59 PM, Wednesday, March 15. Winners will be selected and announced later that week.

The winning entries will be proudly displayed on PGC with fanfare and ticker-tape.* We also have the following prize packages to award to the photos we think are best. (Note: all prizes are subject to change until the contest submission deadline. Some prizes may be added after the initial contest announcement, so check back often!)

It just occurred to me that I'm the only person in the first world without a camera. Not even a camera phone. Weep for my inability to participate.

    Karl Castaneda #2March 07, 2006

Guys, seriously, this prize is HAWT. If I didn't already have most of this stuff and wasn't a staffer, I'd be drooling over this hardcore.

    KnowsNothingMarch 07, 2006

What are PGC's rules about entering a contest when you've already won something? I know there's a time limit where you can't enter another contest, but I'm not sure how long it is.

    Ian SaneMarch 07, 2006

Open worldwide, eh? Always nice. face-icon-small-smile.gif Though now I have to think of something to photograph.

It's very nice of Nintendo to donate prizes though a Cube seems almost redundant considering the audience. Still it's a good amount of stuff. The runner-up prizes are on par with typical first prizes.

    Who writes this stuff? Classic.

I've never entered a PGC contest (mostly because I lack talent) but I'll see if I can come up with something to photograph. Does it have to be a single picture, or can it be a series of photos put into the same JPG file that tell a comic-book like story (or a photo montage)?

    Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusMarch 07, 2006

Seems very interesting go go digi cam!

The Lik-Sang prize is going to be some very cool stuff, I'm just finalizing it. We wanted a DS Lite, but they didn't feel right giving one away in a contest when they still can't supply all their preordering customers with enough units (and won't be able to for quite some time).

Pics of some prizes on the way!

    Smash_BrotherMarch 07, 2006

    Questions:

    1. Does it have to be a photo with zero editing or can it be photochopped? (like to show a sequence of frames in one photo)

    2. Can it have a 1-2 line caption at the bottom or something along those lines?

    mantidorMarch 07, 2006

How can you offer 7 GC when the picture only has 6 face-icon-small-shocked.gif ?

Im absolutely blank for ideas for this contest, if the holly spirit illuminates me Ill probably submit somthing with my very crappy webcam.

    Bill AurionMarch 07, 2006

Ahahaha, look closely and you might find the seventh... face-icon-small-smile.gif

We allow for creativity, so long as everything is 100% your stuff and it's one jpeg file.

    Termin8AnakinMarch 07, 2006

    VERY COOL STUFF HERE!
    I WILL ENTER!

Just gotta get my brain thinking for an idea....im crap with creative stuff like this lol. But I will try!

So yeah, Smasth_Brother's second question, are we allowed to put in some text as a sort of tagline/caption sorta thing on the photo?
Cause then it'd be like a birthday card sort of thing as well.

    Termin8AnakinMarch 07, 2006

    LOL!

    Bill loves Lindsay Lohan......*laffo*

oh, and how are you actually judging it?
The humour? Seriousness? BECAUSE HUMOUR IS SERIOUS BUSINESS, YOU SEE.
How it evokes one's emotions and pulls on one's heart strings with a strong sense of nostalgia?

All of the above? It's just whichever one we like the best. You won't get more specific criteria than that.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorMarch 07, 2006

    Neat-o.

I'd like an answer to this too, please, since I was one of the winners from the Metroid Mismatch contest last November.

    vuduMarch 08, 2006

Any chance you guys could provide us with a high resolution PGC logo?

I cannot most of your questions, since I am not in charge of the contest. I can tell you that no photoshopping is allowed, so the PGC logo would have to be printed out for it to be used in an entry.

    vuduMarch 08, 2006

That's what I was planning on.

If they do give out a High Res verion of the logo I'm going to be upset, I might even cry. I just finished putting mine all together and I had to re-draw out the logo as best as I could in Freehand.

I hope cropping and some color correction is okay Photoshoping. If its not they better say so soon so I can re-send my picture.

I took a photo of my computer monitor. That had better be allowed. I did not alter the actual photo I took in any way.

    miedoMarch 11, 2006

I wonder if I can win by default...

I wish the folks running the contest would post in here to answer your questions. :-/

He's too busy running the mafia game...

    StrellMarch 12, 2006

Well I'm going to enter, regardless of last November. I hope that is ok since, well, no answer to my question. face-icon-small-smile.gif

    Karl Castaneda #2March 12, 2006

I'm gonna poke Stan now so that he answers these questions...

PryopizmStan Ferguson, Staff AlumnusMarch 12, 2006

The only question I can answer is that I can't provide a high res version of the PGC logo.

As far as how long you have to wait after winning one contest, I have absolutely no idea. If there's a rule about that, I don't know it. I'm judging this based on the quality of the pictures sent in, so unless Jonny expressly says, "Hey, no letting people who won within the last X number of contests win," it's not going to be a factor in my decision making.

EDIT: Monitor photos are okay. Also, I'm going to clarify the Photoshopping issue: Adding text is fine. Altering the images in a photo is not fine. If there is text on something you took a picture of, (i.e. a shirt, book, etc.) and that text is altered, that is considered altering the image. However if you take a picture of yourself with a Burger King crown and added Purple text saying, "King of PGC!" that would be acceptable, albeit lame (no one has done that, I just came up with that idea--which is probably why it's lame.)

    KDR_11kMarch 12, 2006

However if you take a picture of yourself with a Burger King crown and added Purple text saying, "King of PGC!" that would be acceptable

But it would be a rip-off of Homestar Runner's King of Town!

    wanderingMarch 13, 2006

The extended deadline increases my chances of entering somewhat, but my entry was going to feature Louie heavily, so now...I'm not sure.

    NinGurl69 *hugglesMarch 13, 2006

Apparently the site might end up being named PLANET FUNHOUSE

You could still do it as a farewell or something.

    Smash_BrotherMarch 13, 2006

What about darkening an image to make it visible?

I tried a pile of different lighting schemes but I could only make all of my photo visible if I dimmed the brightness. Is that acceptable?

The photo is 100% real, it's just that you couldn't see all of it unless I darkened a specific section of it because the light was too bright there.

If I had a $1,000 digital camera, I'm sure I wouldn't have this problem, but I'm working with what I have here.

Smash, that should be fine. Primarily, we want to make sure people aren't cutting and pasting one image onto another, i.e. Photoshopping (although the Photoshop software can be used for many other purposes).

    Smash_BrotherMarch 13, 2006

Gotcha. Just wanted to make sure.

I could resubmit without the darkening, but it would look like crap.

    capamericaMarch 13, 2006

I hope no one thinks mine is photoshopped, I would hope that if there was any question someone would ask.
Cause if there is any question of it I would be more then happy to mail it the parts of my submission.

    StrellMarch 13, 2006

Mine wasn't Photoshopped, but my photojournalism sister made it brighter/heightened the contrast on my entry. I've got several pictures of the situation at hand, so thankfully I can provide more proof if ever needed.

    UniversalJuanMarch 13, 2006

So uh...PGC staff. Have you ever considered a contest that involves just a good old fashioned drawing? I mean something everyone can enter and all? I don't mean to come off as a whiner but I don't have a digital camera or the ability to make a movie for the site (Reference to a previous contest). Drawing? Oh man...I can't even do stick figures well (This is not a bluff....). I'm sure I'm not the only longitme reader of this site who would love to have a shot at the prizes but possibly feel a tad alienated with the method of entry (A nod to past contests as well).

Again, I do not mean to come off as whiny, callous, or judgemental. I am simply giving my input on the matter. OH, and best of luck to those who are able to enter face-icon-small-smile.gif

    DasmosMarch 14, 2006

The Metroid and Spiderman contests were both drawing ones. They were both recent also.

    HadesGigasMarch 14, 2006

Exactly, it's not your fault you have no talent!!

    mantidorMarch 14, 2006

The only contest I entered was the christmas postcard one because it was just photoshop, but that was a bit unfair, because those graphic desginers with tons of experience and the right software had a considerable advantage. I have liked the following contests much more, even though I havent participated in any for lack of talent, time or in this case, a camera and an idea face-icon-small-tongue.gif all I come up with has very little to do with PGC even if it has some Nintendo characters, I dont even know who this Louie guy is tpg.gif.

We try to mix up the entry methods each time, and in fact I think we've done a great job of that. Over the years, we've had contests tailored to:

    Artists
    Digital Artists
    Photographers
    Film Directors
    Musicians
    Writers
Fanboys (showing off their crazy stuff)
    Trivia Nuts
    Game Music Fans

Now, I think most of our readers could claim some proficiency in at least one of these categories...but if you have any suggestions to expand the list for future contests, please let us know.

    KDR_11kMarch 14, 2006

I can only do 3d graphics. Or games. Can we have a contest of one of those? Make a DS-spec game?

    PS: Jon Coley sucks.

    Same.

Mine took me a week to plan and build, but in hindsight, it's more of a salute to all things Nintendo (including its old-skool heritage) than it is to PGC.

I just haven't been around long enough to offer more PGC inside jokes, references and whatnot.

not to mention the lack of a camera and time to find this locations

Next contest will do hopefully face-icon-small-happy.gif

    I'm in the same place.

I never win these things, so I'm kind of in 'no way to win mode...I'm just checking the front page every 2 minutes to see what other people beat me with.' But then I'm like, 'well, I can't go in assuming I'll win, that'll jynx it and then I really won't.' And then I'm like, 'Well, I shouldn't have a glimmer of hope only to have it crushed!'

And then I'm like, 'Come on, Wandering, there are seven winners, of course I'm one of them!'

'are you kidding Wandering? Do you have any idea how elaborate all of the other entries are? These people worked months on their entries, you don't have a chance!'

    'Well, listen, can't you just...'

    'No! Shut up!'

    'Well I just...'

    'Shut the hell up!'

'If you keep yelling at me I'll hurt you again! I'll hit you over the head with a baseball bat just like last time!'

'DO it! Come on you bastard!'

    'Stop it! Leave me alone!'

'You need me, Wandering, I'm the only one who's ever loved you. The only one who can ever help you.'

    'I know.'

'Come on, let's have fun with model airplane glue together.'

    'Okay.'

    Smash_BrotherMarch 19, 2006

Hate to say it, but the truth is that it could be that all three of us were 100% wrong in the direction we took our photos and what the PGC staff was looking for.

Though, I'd think that if someone here had won, they'd at least post about it. I'd rather know than be left in suspense.

    IceColdMarch 19, 2006

Well, many of these contest winners aren't forum regulars..

    Smash_BrotherMarch 20, 2006

That had crossed my mind as well, but I largely suspect that, in a contest like this which is subjective more than anything, a forumer who knows about PGC and its inside jokes would be able to generate a picture which is more along the lines of what PGC is looking for, at least enough so that they'd make it into the top 7.

    Smash_BrotherMarch 20, 2006

Well vudu you could play it with out the RAM add-on, you just wouldn't have all the cool features.

I went with that side part cause I though it looked cooler then the normal side bar.

Unaware to everyone Planet GameCube V required 4 GBAs to play =P

Don't get me started about them releasing PGC, then PGC Lite.

    vuduMarch 20, 2006

Does PGC DS have single kart multiplayer?

...Oh well. Wasn't expecting to win, anyway.

yeah, but you can only play as four differently colored Louies.

    Clever entry, capamerica, btw.

Yeah, I did that about a gazillion times. Friggin' spam...

And you can only race on the Technical Support Forum. How bland...

    Toad0787March 20, 2006

When are the results going to be up?

    Smash_BrotherMarch 20, 2006

    I'd guess tomorrow.

Sounds like Pry had some technical difficulties (Minda virus, back from the grave!).

You should mail those to PGC anyway. I'd put those on my wall if I were them.

Incase anyone can't beleave it, I did make all thouse boxes. Infact If you guys at PlanetGameCube want them I could send them to you. ^_^

    WuTangTurtleMarch 22, 2006

    Nice entry capamerica.

Felt like sharing my losing piece too.

    Here's my entry:

edit: I have some behind the scenes photos somewheres as well. I might share those later.

    StrellMarch 22, 2006

Wandering. Wow. This will be scary:

    entry.jpg

    Clearly, great minds thing alike.

    A couple things:

    1) That is my real Gamecube.

    2) I edited out my face. The actual entry has it, but meh.

    3) This idea was from my sister.

    vuduMarch 22, 2006

Is that real frosting? And--if so--why would you cover your GameCube in frosting?

    StrellMarch 22, 2006

    Yea, it is.

I didn't cover the GC in frosting, though it looks like that. I put tape and paper underneath it. Frosted it, took the pic, then removed the underlinings I had made. True, some got on the machine, but nothing a slightly damp cloth couldn't get off in a few seconds. I did get some under the crystal lens thing at the top, but that was a quick fix.

I played Viewtiful Joe without issue afterward.

    Ahaha. Wow.

...actually, I have to confess, I got the idea by hiding in the bushes outside your house.

    I knew I should've gone to Smash_Brother's house instead....

Those icing mushrooms are great, BTW.

Heh, yeah. I didn't want to say anything because I hadn't even yet decided if I should say anything.

These all look excellent as well. I feel bad because you guys went the distance and actually MADE your cakes whereas I brought a picture to Market Basket and had them do it.

Sadly, the actual cake itself, while aesthetically appealing, tasted pretty bad. face-icon-small-tongue.gif

ahaha, please don't feel bad. You put much more effort into your entry than I put into mine.

...at this point in the post there was supposed to be a funny picture to prove it, but, I can't find it. Oh well. Let's just say the two sides of the cake in the picture, were the only two sides that were actually iced.

    Smash_BrotherApril 03, 2006

But it's a whole cake, right?

    zeldamental_truly evilApril 03, 2006

have you guys recieved your prizes yet?when should we expect it??

Winners in the U.S. should have their prizes by now, except maybe for the Lik-Sang prize pack which was shipped directly from Lik-Sang. Winners outside the U.S. should get their prizes by the end of this week or the beginning of next week, barring any major customs delays. Also, you may have to pay some customs fees, because the retail value of the package is declared at $167 USD.

    zeldamental_truly evilApril 04, 2006

thanks for the info, i am from outside the US,i guess that pretty much explains it.

    Smash_BrotherApril 04, 2006

Yeah, Lik-Sang package hasn't arrived yet.

My friend loves his DS and pulled me back into Animal Crossing with him. Now he's trying to seduce all of my female villagers...

He's the stingy type so he won't grab Hunters yet, but Brain Age is coming for $20 and that's RIGHT up his alley.

    IceColdApril 04, 2006

Wow, that's great to hear... hats off to you again for giving it to him face-icon-small-smile.gif

    Smash_BrotherApril 05, 2006

Thanks, now I just need to find the GC a good charity.

I might just email Tycho at PA about Child's Play, but that only happens once a year at Christmas, I believe.

    vuduApril 06, 2006

It probably doesn't make sense shipping the GameCube to PA and then having them ship it somewhere else. More will be spent on shipping than the Cube is worth. You'd be better off calling your local children's hospital and asking them if they'd accept a donation in the form of a totally awesome video game system. And then when they say "Why yes, we'd love an Xbox 360" you hang up on them.

    wanderingApril 06, 2006

You should make one of these, and put the cube in it. You'll make some random person very happy. Or else have the bomb squad called in.
