Logitech Speed Force

For the true racing enthusiast, Logitech's Speed Force Steering Wheel allows GameCube gamers to drive cars the way they were meant to be driven.

Logitech recently showed off its Speed Force Steering Wheel at the 2003 Game Developers Conference. EA's NASCAR Thunder 2003 was used to demonstrate the peripheral. The most noticeable feature of the wheel is that it feels sturdy and well built. I made sure to make some hard, sharp turns with the wheel, and it stayed securely clamped down. Playing a few races of NASCAR Thunder helped show off the wheel's responsiveness. While I had not previously played NASCAR, I felt like I had pretty good control while driving my car. The wheel felt like it was tuned just right, where slight and great turns affected my car appropriately.

The button layout on the wheel is adequate, with the + Control Pad and Z button on the wheel's front left and the A, B, X, and Y buttons on the wheel's front right. All are fairly accessible without having to reach too far. The L and R buttons are found behind the wheel and can be easily reached. The pedals felt decent, but they definitely seemed designed for a seated player rather than a standing one. As with the wheel, the accelerator felt nicely tuned. I'm not sure about the brake though, as I barely used it while playing. Given the pedals' inclination, quickly shifting from one pedal to another while standing was tough -- tough enough to make me stop trying after a few minutes of playing. The wheel also featured some nice force feedback when drifting off the driving surface or colliding with a barrier or another car. The feedback was reasonably strong, though it seems like it could have been stronger for some of the rougher collisions that occured in the game.

Overall, the Logitech Speed Force seems to meet the criteria for a good peripheral. It felt well built and proved to be quite responsive in-game.
