Super Mario Sunshine

by David Trammell - July 30, 2002, 11:06 am EDT

Rize chimes in with yet another set of Mario impressions, with a focused look at the graphics.

I can't believe how many people are complaining about the graphics. In anycase, I don't really care one way or the other because I'm having so much fun.

Still, everyone knows Mario is fun so let's talk about the graphics some. If Zelda looks like a cartoon, then Super Mario Sunshine looks like a painting. If you really start inspecting the graphic carefully sure you may find a bunch of technical things to gripe about. However, if you just sit back and enjoy the game, you'll find that the artistic qualities are simply stunning. In any given level there are a TON of things going on. Everything is moving and in any level with a lot of sunlight (most of them) there is a shimmering heat effect for the background (nothing revolutionary). The thing is, nothing technical about the graphics makes you stop and say oooh, but the overall picture that's painted is very beautiful to me. Maybe I have a weakness for epic views (and each level manages to have at least one great place to view the entire level from... at a steady framerate I might add). Speaking of framerate, aside from one or two isolated incidents, it's never slowed down enough for me to notice. It may only be 30 to 40 fps, but whatever it is, it's solid and it plays perfectly fine for this kind of game.

The gameplay is typical platformer action with the water pack thrown in and the quality cranked way up to Nintendo standards. I've got 54 Shines so far. I've unlocked 7 different levels (though I've only explored four of them really). I've unlocked Yoshi (who controls perfectly). Eating things in 3D is sooo much fun. The sound effects are very numerous since there are so many little creatures and environmental effects (like beach noises). There are little things hidden all over the place (blue coins, Shines, 1-UP's). The levels are huge and just a lot of fun to explore. I've never been a big fan of Mario music (I mean, it's good, but I don't eat it up like say.. Castlevania music). Still, there seems to be a lot more new music than I expected rather than just remixes of old Mario tunes. The music is not quite my style, but it fits the game perfectly and it's of good quality. The story is very coherent for a Japanese game being played by an American, since the voice acting (surprise) is in English rather than Japanese. This make's me wonder if the next Zelda game will have voice acting (of course, Link, just like Mario would never say a word). I'm really not sure what else to say here. I think the game is beautiful, and it's sure as hell a lot of fun to play as you would expect from a Mario game. Must get more Shines.
