Super Smash Bros. Melee 101

Event Mode #1-20

by the NWR Staff - March 1, 2002, 12:35 am EST

Are you ready to accept the challenge?

Event 1:Trouble King - Fight Bowser in a classic Mushroom Kingdom clash!
Character:Mario
Stage:Battlefield
Summary:You take control of Mario in a Stock match against Bowser at CPU Level 3. You each have two lives.
Strategy:There isn’t much to this match. Just go right out Bowser with Smash Attacks and power hits. A level 3 CPU opponent shouldn’t give you much trouble. Just knock him off the edge, the use an edge guard strategy to keep him off.

Event 2:Lord of the Jungle - A duel of epic proportions! Which ape is top primate?
Character:Giant Donkey Kong
Stage:Kongo Jungle
Summary:It’s your Giant DK against a miniature DK in a three minute Stock match. This time, the CPU level has been upped to 4. You will each have two lives.
Strategy:As most people would probably expect, the first few events are fairly easy to complete. The only thing you need to worry about here is using attacks that will hit the tiny DKs. Focus on grabs and the Hand Slap (Down + B), and you should have no problem taking down this event.

Event 3:Bomb-fest - Bombs are everywhere in this explosive battle.
Character:Select Any
Stage:Princess Peach’s Castle
Summary:It’s your choice of character in a Stock match, against Link and Samus at level 4. Each player will have one life. The only trick is that Link and Samus will be focusing on using their bomb attacks. You’ll also get a lot of Poke Balls with Electrode inside (big bomb Pokemon).
Strategy:The difficulty level of the CPU opponents hasn’t risen any, but the fact that they’ll concentrate on bomb attacks will make them slightly harder than your typical level 4 CPU opponent. You can still get by if you focus on power hits and Smash Attacks. Just be sure to watch out for the Poke Balls. They all contain Electrode, which will deal a great amount of damage to anyone around it. Grab as many Poke Balls as possible and drop them anyway. As long as you avoid them, chances are one of the CPU opponents will fall victim to the explosion.

Event 4:Dino-wrangling - A giant Yoshi is on the loose! Somebody stop it!
Character:Select Any
Stage:Yoshi's Story
Summary:Your choice of character against a level 5 Giant Yoshi in a Stock match. You’ll have three lives, while Giant Yoshi will only have one.
Strategy:Giant Yoshi’s size gives you somewhat of an advantage. His main attacks will consist of the Egg Lay, and standard kicks. All you should really have to do is stay on the top platform and attack away. If Yoshi hits you with the Egg Lay, tap the buttons as quickly as possible so get out.

Event 5:Spare Change - Don’t stop until you get 200 coins!
Character:Ness
Stage:Onett
Summary:Take control of Ness on his home turf against a level 4 CPU Captain Falcon in a one minute, twenty second Coin match. The first to 200 coins wins the match.
Strategy:The computer controlled Falcon will mostly try his Rapid Punch Combo. When he does this, or any of Falcon’s other attacks, simply roll to the opposite side of him and perform a Smash Attack. Then grab as many coins as you can. If you hang out on the bottom level of this stage, Falcon will be hit by almost every car that goes by. Just watch for the warning sign and put up your shield when the car comes by. If Falcon gets close to 200 coins, move over to either side of the stage and try to throw him out. If you can KO him, he’ll lose half his coins and you’ll have an opportunity to grab them.

Event 6:Kirbys on Parade - Look out! A rainbow of Kirbys is after you!
Character:Select Any
Stage:Fountain of Dreams
Summary:Any character you choose against a trio of level three CPU Kirby’s in a Team Battle Stock match. Your character will have one life, while all three Kirby’s will have two lives each.
Strategy:Another fairly simple event. One or two Smash Attacks or power hits will KO each of the Kirby CPU players. All you really have to do is sit in the middle of the stage and attack them when they get close.

Event 7:Pokemon Battle - Use Poke Balls to duel with Pikachu.
Character:Select Any
Stage:Pokémon Stadium
Summary:The character of your choice against a level three CPU Pikachu in a Stock match. You will each have two lives, and Poke Balls will appear at a very high rate.
Strategy:A level 3 CPU opponent isn’t much to worry about. Just focus on opening as many Poke Balls as you can. If Pikachu gets to a Poke Ball before you do, he will pick it up and open it. Try to level out the Pokemon attacks by opening balls on either side of the stage. This will make sure Pikachu can’t get away from the attacks.

Event 8:Hot Date on Brinstar - You’re interfering with Samus’s Brinstar raid!
Character:Select Any
Stage:Brinstar
Summary:Pick your character and head to Brinstar. You’ll be fighting in a Stock match against a level 3 Samus. You will each have three lives. The trick? You’ll start at 102% while Samus begins the match at 130%.
Strategy:Even though you and Samus start the match with a very high damage percent, Samus’ stamina has been raised and you won’t be able to KO her as easily as you would expect. However, Samus is still only set at level 3, and you’ve got three lives to burn. Go right at her with Smash Attacks and power hits. If she begins to attack back, roll or dodge to avoid her attacks, and counterattack.

Event 9:Hide ‘n’ Sheik - Only Sheik KOs count! Wait for the change...
Character:Select Any
Stage:Great Bay
Summary:Select the character of your choice and go into a Stock match against two computer controlled Zelda’s at level 3. You’ll each have one life, but Zelda will not lose a life if she gets KO’d as Zelda. You must KO her as Sheik.
Strategy:You’re only fighting level 3 computer opponents, so this event isn’t too hard. Stay on the higher platform in the middle of the stage, and chip away at your opponents. Once they reach 50% damage, move to one of the lower platforms on either side of the main platform. From here, use Smash Attacks or power hits to finish her off only when she’s Sheik. If she changes into Zelda, just roll back and forth until she changes back. If you start to get hit, move back up to the main platform, but stay near the edge.

Event 10:All-Star Match 1 - It’s the Mario Stars: Mario, DK, Yoshi, Peach and Bowser.
Character:Select Any
Stage:Yoshi’s Island, Jungle Japes, Yoshi’s Story, Princess Peach’s Castle, and Rainbow Cruise
Summary:Take your character of choice and KO Mario (level 3), Donkey Kong (level 3), Yoshi (level 3), Peach (level 3), and Bowser (level 4) within four minutes. You’ve got two lives, while the CPU opponents will only have one. You’ll also fight them all one at a time instead of a Team Battle.
Strategy:As you start getting higher in the events, they start to get a little harder. The main thing that makes this one harder than most of the previous events is that you have to beat all five opponents within the four minute time limit. To do this, you’ll need to lure each opponent to the edge of their respective stages. From here you should have no problem using power hits and Smash Attacks to KO them. If you have trouble, get them down to 50% or so in the middle of the stage, then lure them to the edge to finish them off.

Event 11:King of the Mountain - Ice Climbers protect their turf! Just try to survive!
Character:Select Any
Stage:Icicle Mountain
Summary:Choose your character and go up against a team of two level 4 Ice Climbers. All you have to do is stay alive for one minute and two seconds. It doesn’t matter how many times you KO them, as long as you don’t die, you’ll complete this event.
Strategy:There isn’t much to this event. You’ll need to be careful of the two Ice Climber opponents, as well as their scrolling stage. Just remember that if you get knocked to far to either side, or go too high or too low, you will be KO’d. Simply stay away from the Ice Climbers and only attack them if you absolutely have to.

Event 12:Seconds, Anyone? - Take out Capt. Falcon in less than seven seconds!
Character:Select Any
Stage:Mute City
Summary:You’ve got seven seconds to KO a level 3 Captain Falcon. Your character and C. Falcon will start at 100% damage.
Strategy:While this event may seem easy, if you don’t approach it with the correct strategy, it may take you a few attempts to complete. As soon as the event starts, hit Falcon with a Smash Attack or clear out attack. This will send him flying, but he probably hasn’t been KO’d yet. Wait for him to get back on the platform, then perform the attack again to finish him off. You’ve only got seven seconds, so don’t worry about charging up attacks until after you’ve knock Falcon off the platform the first time.

Event 13:Yoshi’s Egg - Protect the single remaining Yoshi egg from being broken!
Character:Yoshi
Stage:Rainbow Cruise
Summary:Take control of Yoshi and protect his egg for 55 seconds. You’re up against Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Fox all at level 4. You all have an unlimited number of lives, but if the egg breaks, you fail.
Strategy:Don’t make this event more complicated than it is. There are a few things you need to remember right off the bat. The computer characters will generally leave the egg alone and go after you instead. Also, you can pick up the egg to better protect it, and the computer opponents won’t attack anything once you get KO’d, until you’re back on the stage. Therefore, for the first 30 seconds of the event, go directly for the edge of the ship and jump off. Make sure you don’t have the egg. If you get KO’d with the egg in hand, you will fail. After the first 30 seconds, the stage will shift from the ship to several platforms on the left side. At this point, grab the egg and run. Avoid your opponents as best you can. Just remember that if you get hit too much, you will drop the egg.

Event 14:Trophy Tussel 1 - Face off for the trophy! The prize this time: Goomba!
Character:Select Any
Stage:Special Goomba Trophy
Summary:Suit up for a three minute, two life, Stock match against Ness, Bowser, and Mario all at level 3. You’ll need to KO each of them two times within the three minutes.
Strategy:Don’t let the shape of this stage fool you. It’s possible to go almost all the way down to the bottom of the Goomba’s head. That said, the stage is still considerably smaller than your normal Melee stage. Start in the middle of the stage and clear out all three opponents with a Smash Attack, power hit, or clear out attack. From here, just keep attacking all three with strong attacks. Because they’re at level 3, you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them ganging up on you. However, if you do get caught between their attacks, just roll out of the way and continue with your offense.

Event 15:Girl Power - A group of femme fatales has dropped by for a visit...
Character:Select Any
Stage:Fountain of Dreams
Summary:Choose any character you like, and take on Samus, Peach, and Zelda in a two life Stock match. The computer opponents are all set at level 4.
Strategy:You’ve got two lives to burn here, but the stage is small, and the competition won’t just roll over and die for you. Utilize your roll and dodge techniques to get around your opponents attacks and counter attack with a Smash Attack or throw. When you first begin, don’t focus on any one opponent. Instead, try to KO all three of them. Once one of them has been KO’d focus your attention on getting a second KO on that character. The fewer opponents you have, the easier this event will be.

Event 16:Kirby’s Air-raid - Warp Stars are everywhere! Climb aboard and hang on!
Character:Kirby
Stage:Corneria
Summary:It’s up to your pink Kirby to take down ten yellow Kirby opponents (five at a time), in a 38 second Stock match. Each of your opponents will fight at level 1. The catch is simply that you have to KO the ten Kirby opponents with warp stars within the time limit, and without getting KO’d yourself.
Strategy:You’ve only got 38 seconds, which certainly isn’t a lot of time for this event. You’ll need to jump right in and look for warp stars. The CPU opponents will rarely attack you if at all. Once you’ve located a warp star (remember to look in the lower right portion of the Great Fox) wait next to it until there is a group of Kirby opponents for you to hit. You’ll have some control over the warp star by pressing left or right. However, if you don’t wait a few seconds to KO several opponents at once, you will run out of time before all ten have been taken care of.

Event 17:Bounty Hunters - Fight a fellow bounty hunter for the bounty on Bowser!
Character:Samus Aran
Stage:Jungle Japes
Summary:As Samus, you’ll have two minutes to take care of a level 5 Bowser and make sure the level 4 Captain Falcon doesn’t KO him before you do. You all have one life.
Strategy:Don’t worry too much about Falcon. You won’t be able to harm him, and More often then not he’ll end up KOing himself before Bowser. The only thing you need to worry about in this event is Bowser himself. At level 5, he’ll go after and attack you with an aggressive force. You may have to utilize your rolling and dodging technique to avoid some of his attacks. However, once you’ve knocked him off, it shouldn’t be too much trouble keeping him off.

Event 18:Link’s Adventure - Everyone has a dark side... Link has two!
Character:Link
Stage:Hyrule Temple
Summary:You control Link as he fights against Oni-Link, a shadow version of himself. You’ll fight in a two life Stock match, with Oni-Link at level 6 difficulty.
Strategy:Fighting against a level 6 computer opponent is no joke. Oni-Link will take every possible chance to inflict some damage or KO your Link. Watch out for his bombs as they will stun you and allow Oni-Link to follow up with more attacks. Also, take heed of his arrows and throw as their range can be deceiving. Your best strategy here is to wear down Oni-Link as much as possible while staying toward the middle of the stage. Roll and dodge to avoid his attacks, then follow your evasive maneuvers with your own quick Smash Attack or power hit. Once you’ve got Oni-Link around 110%, make your way to the edge of the stage, and finish him off.

Event 19:Peach’s Peril - Bowser’s after Peach! Again! Guard her until time runs out.
Character:Mario
Stage:Final Destination
Summary:Relive old times as you lead Mario against a level 5 Bowser in an attempt to save Princess Peach. Bowser will have unlimited lives, but you’ll need to keep Peach from getting KO’d for one minute, without losing a single life.
Strategy:This one is actually easier than it looks. Even though Peach will walk slowly across the flat stage, it’s not hard to keep Bowser away. Don’t focus on KOing Bowser. Instead focus on keeping him away from Peach. Use your throws and Smash Attacks to move Bowser to the opposite side of the stage. You may also find that items will come in handy, so pick them up as much as possible. If Bowser gets a hold of Peach, you can still attack him to knock her out of his hands.

Event 20:All-Star Match 2 - Nintendo’s realistic stars are out in force.
Character:Select Any
Stage:Brinstar, Great Bay, Hyrule Temple, Mute City, Corneria
Summary:You’ll have two lives and four minutes to KO Samus, Link, Zelda, Captain Falcon, and Fox McCloud (all at level 4) in five separate battles. Your damage will carry over from match to match.
Strategy:Just like Event 10, draw each opponent to the end of the stage and take them out as quickly as possible. The only difference here is the difficulty level of your opponents. If you’re having problems, you may need to keep them around the middle of the stage, while you chip away at their damage. Then draw them close to the edges and finish them off once they’re high enough in damage. Don’t take too long however, you’ve only got four minutes to KO all five opponents. Remember to use your roll and dodge to gain free hits after you avoid their attacks.
