Multiple New Smash Bros. Characters Confirmed
« on: September 11, 2014, 05:48:00 AM »

Players with early copies of the Japanese version have unlocked quite a few characters.

The Super Smash Bros. roster is nearing total confirmation as players who were able to get early copies of the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. on 3DS have unlocked a number of characters, including Duck Hunt Dog, Bowser Jr., and Dark Pit, confirming the leak from a few weeks ago.

The Duck Hunt Dog teams up with a duck from Duck Hunt and has attacks that call to mind NES Zapper games. Bowser Jr.'s alternate costumes are all of the Koopalings, to the point that they feature different voices. His Final Smash references Super Mario Sunshine by summoning the imposter Mario villain from that game. Dark Pit appears to be a pretty cut-and-dry clone of Pit.

In addition to those newcomers, a variety of veterans were confirmed as well, including Ness, Falco, Wario, Mr. Game & Watch, Jigglypuff, Dr. Mario., and R.O.B. the robot.

Also, several characters have significant evidence that they aren't returning at all. Wolf, playable in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, has a trophy in the game that doesn't allude to him being a playable fighter. Also, a Polar Bear trophy from Ice Climbers is categorized as "Other," instead of being categorized as Ice Climbers, pointing towards the pair that have been in both Melee and Brawl as not being in the new game. Additionally, it seems very unlikely that Snake, Lucas, and Mewtwo are playable, as well.

As of this writing, it seems that all characters have been unlocked in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. However, if anything does come up, we'll report it here.

R.O.B. has been unlocked and confirmed.
Whoever said, "Cheaters never win" must've never met Khushrenada.

R.O.B. has been unlocked and confirmed.

Thanks for the heads up! I actually watched a Twitch streamer unlock him about an hour ago as well. I've updated the story reflect that R.O.B. is confirmed. After he was unlocked, the streamer said that the message on the screen (in Japanese) stated that all fighters had been unlocked.

No problem. I figured you'd get the news pretty fast as it seems like everyone is watching and waiting on how things are progressing for those playing it in Japan.

Did Neal write the article or did you? I assume you updated to help out naturally, but I just wanted to be clear in case there was some glicth in the system.

I watched a bit of SSB 3DS on : http://www.multitwitch.tv/hamayama/gema_yue . I don't know if they'll stream again though.

It's too bad about Ice Climbers not being in there. Especially when a character like Dark Pit is included. Unless he plays very differently from Kid Icarus, he should have just been a costume alt. They have a great playing style that sets them apart from the other characters and it's too bad to lose that.

I assume Dr. Mario is there the same way Dark Pit is in there ("Easy" to put them in). Kind of like how four of the new characters in Ultra Street Fighter IV are from Street Fighter X Tekken. They were already made, so they just dropped them in with little to no changes (and it shows unfortunately). Maybe there will be some small chance of DLC in the future that Ice Climbers will figure into, but I wouldn't count on it.

I am impressed with the effort they put into the alt costumes of Bowser Jr. And I'm surprised (and glad) Jigglypuff made it back, considering the other Pokemon that were cut.
