Bayonetta 2

by John Rairdin - December 24, 2014, 11:23 am EST

I asked my wife. She says Bayonetta is empowered and not over sexualized. So it’s okay to like this.

When Platinum released the first Bayonetta in 2010, no one would have expected the sequel to be a Nintendo exclusive. Despite the jarring juxtaposition of Mario and a sexually charged beat-‘em-up, Bayonetta 2‘s tight gameplay managed to fit right in with Nintendo’s lineup.

Bayonetta 2 picks up right where the first game left. Heaven and Hell are at war and Bayonetta is caught in the middle. When a demon goes rogue and kills Bayonetta’s friend Jeanne, Bayonetta decides to go to hell to get Jeanne’s soul back. Along the way she encounters a mysterious young boy who wields some strange power of the flow of time. The game takes our heroic witch through earth, Purgatory, Hell, and Heaven in an incredible over the top adventure.

The gameplay improves on the original in every conceivable way. Combat has not only become faster, but also much more responsive. This allows for the game to be extremely chaotic without being too confusing. Most of the combat is based around very specific timing. A dodge timed at the perfect moment will impose “Witch Time". This puts the world around you into slow motion, giving you plenty of time to execute more complex combos and cause massive amounts of damage. Additionally, there are a variety of weapon types that can be combined in different ways and cause the game to play very differently. Weapons can be attached to both Bayonetta’s feet and hands, and two different presets can be saved. This combined with a strict scoring system gives the game a huge amount of replay value. The occasional mech and aerial missions break up the style of combat nicely.

The word epic really doesn’t do this game justice. From fighting angels atop a fighter jet, to giant demons battling within the depths of Hell, Bayonetta 2‘s scope cannot be overstated. Visually Bayonetta 2 is absolutely beautiful. The game boasts sharp, colorful visuals that make other games of this genre look boring and dull by comparison. Lovable characters are all presented wonderfully and make the story that much more interesting. It’s a dazzling adventure that will grip you from start to finish. Combined with the remastered version of the original Bayonetta, this is one of the greatest values in gaming. Welcome to the family Bayonetta.

I'm noticing a distinct lack of Layton vs Wright.

That just means James Jones was NOT part of that group.
