8 out of 25 ain't bad, right?
Let that depression sink right in. My more pie-in-the-sky predictions all failed, but my safe bets were, by and large, affirmed. I don't know if that's great or awful. Certainly, it means that there were no surprises at E3, but we already knew that a week ago. Let's talk about the ones I got right and ignore the rest.
4. "Wii Sports" type game announced for Wii U's launch.
And now we know that game is Nintendo Land, which I straight up refused to play at E3 in protest of it being such a "high point" of the Nintendo press conference. When they forewent showing off some epic teaser at the end in favor of FIREWORKS IN NINTENDO LAND, I decided right then and there that I would not play any of those games, despite the sweet pins.
5. Castlevania game announced for 3DS eShop/retail.
It will be both, in fact, but it's not quite what I was expecting. Rather than a straight up Metroidvania game, it's an awkward hybrid of exploration and God of War-style combat. I still don't know how I feel about Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate, but the point is, I was right.
11. Wii saves/DLC will be transferable to Wii U.
As if there was ever any doubt, right?*
15. NSMBU/NSMB2 connectivity detailed.
Giving myself half a point here, because it was detailed at the 3DS conference, and the details were that there will not be any connectivity.
18. Pikmin 3 playable on the show floor.
It was, and it was glorious.
19. Animal Crossing 3DS still MIA.
Yup. This made Nathan Mustafa, who met us at the show, very upset. The real puzzle is that it's out in the next month or so in Japan, but it wasn't even mentioned at E3.
20. Paper Mario 3DS still MIA.
I'm giving myself half a point here, because the game was heavily detailed at the 3DS conference but it was not on the show floor--even though it probably could've been. I guess Nintendo didn't have enough 3DS units to show more than two first-party games this year (bazinga!).
21. Netflix/Hulu+ available on Wii U.
Indeed they will be, as will some other video services. But here's my question: will I be able to watch Deep Space Nine on the Gamepad while my wife watches Real Housewives of Who Gives a Shit on the TV?
22. Wii U-specific Swapnote announced; compatible with 3DS version.
In fact, social connectivity between the systems will go much farther, to the point of wholly revamping the 3DS' OS, I assume. Swapnote will be one of those features. One wonders if the Wii U version will be hampered by so many annoyances.
I didn't do too terribly. I'm mostly disappointed by the lack of news regarding Metroid, Retro Studios, and Beyond Good & Evil 2. Here's to next year, True Believers. It's gonna be AWESOME.
