Show us your launch! Volume #1

Volume 2 - Page 5

by the NWR Staff - November 21, 2001, 11:58 am EST

Well, i live in the boring and overlycrowded town of Winston-Salem, NC. I

camped out for the Xbox on Nov. 15 so that I could sell it and have more

money for Gamecube games, but it turns out that about 5,000 people had the

same plan and ebay is booked with xboxes. so i'm going to return my xbox to

best buy (which means i skipped the first two periods of school for nothing)

and buy THPS 3 and Wave Race. I would have camped out for gamecube too, but i

couldn't... and you'll see why.

Brace yourselves for this exciting story about how I got my gamecube. My

family decided to take a trip to Boone this weekend. We shopped all day and

it was really fun. Oh wait, that sucked. But anyway, we got some tickets to

see the 9:45 Harry Potter and when it ended sometime around 12:30 I begged my

dad to take me by Wal-Mart. "well.... no. we're going to bed," he said. i

cried myself to sleep (no, not literally you moron) but we woke up to leave

the next morning. I was only thinking about gamecube and my dad said that we

could go by walmart as soon as we checked out. We arrived at 11:30 AM and i

walked in speedily looking to see if the Gamecube had already sold out. I

walked to the back pointed at a jet black one and sighed in relief followed

by a scream of joy. The guy asked if I wanted any games, controllers or

memory cards. I picked up a spice orange controller - there was only one left

and about 8 indigo. I would have gotten a game, except for the fact that I

knew if i had gotten one i would have played the crap out of it and not

finished my homework.

The man said they had gotten in about 45 gamecubes - half jet black, half

indigo (indigo?? try purple). They still had around 10-12 cubes left when i

left, but only monkey ball and nhl hitz were the games left. star wars,

luigi's mansion, and one other game (i forgot) sold out. I'm definitely going

to snag a game tuesday afternoon right after school.

And thats the launch. The end.

I swear, I would have camped overnight somewhere

if I didn't know how easy it was to get a GameCube

here(and if my mom would have let me)!

I woke up around 9:30AM and took a quick shower,

got some clothes on, and got ready to go to any

lengths to get my GameCube.

In the car, my mom and I discussed where to go

first. She suggested K-Mart, and I replied, "As long

as I get my 'Cube."

Upon arriving at the big K, I jumped out of the

car, waited for her to get my baby brother out,and

finally walked into K-Mart.

She wanted to go find a basket to put the baby in,

but I didn't have the patience to wait for that. I

insisted that we went to the electronics part of the

store first. So we did.

I was amazed! There were a pretty fair amount of

the little boxes with the indiglo or jet (black)

GameCubes on front! They had about 3 Rogue Leader

games, 1 NHL Hitz 2002, and 1 Madden 2002.

While my mom waited for some guy to get some

things out of a basket for her, I asked the man behind

the counter to get me one of the black GameCubes, and

a Star Wars: Rogue Leader.

My mom ended up paying about 266$ for the system

and game together, but one thing was missing.

They were fresh out of memory cards! Slamming my

fist down on the counter, I asked when they'd get

another shipment in, and of course, they didn't know.

My mom asked for the free inflatable

chair(woohoo...) that we get with the GameCube at

K-Mart, and we left....

Surprised, I was, to find that getting a basket

was harder than getting a GameCube!

So now I'm at home with my 'Cube and something

more to do over this boring Thanksgiving break.

Now I'm waiting for Super Smash Bros. Melee to

come out!

But a part of me's still missing...NO MEMORY

CAAARD!!!!

OMG! Gamecube Launch day was the most stressful day I've had in a long time. And I even had to deal with college finals the week before. Ha! I had no clue what stress was then.

Saturday started just fine. I made sure to sleep extra late so I wouldn't be getting tired while sitting in line. I knew i had to camp, and I wanted to get there early. So I get up and I take my sweet ass time eating breakfast, getting dressed, and all that other good stuff. 6 pm finally rolled around and i decided I would head up to the local Wal-Mart here in Ruston, LA and there I would read a book I borrowed from my roommate and wait for 12:01.

So I am driving over to wally-world and I decide to stop and pick up a soda. As I'm getting out of my car, I open up my armrest to pull out my wallet, but it's not there. I start to panic. How am I going to get a cube, I think. Quickly I scrambled back to the house to look for my wallet. I tear my house apart, I scour my car, I even went over to a friend's house to see if I had left it there. No luck. I couldn't find my wallet, which had $100 from books I had sold back to the university, my credit card, and my driver's liscense. I remember I still had some checks, so I grab my checkbook and instruct my roomates to keep looking for my wallet and bring it to me if they found it.

Needless to say I never found my wallet. It's still missing, and I'm pissed about it. But that wasn't all the bad luck for that night.

After 5 hours of sitting in the layaway department, I was nearing the counter to purchase my cube. I'm still half-depressed at this point that I would not be able to buy 2 games and an extra controller as I had hoped to. I was only able to get the cube, and memory card, and Super Monkey Ball (that game rocks). So my total is calculated and I am starting to write my check... at this point, I think you all know what happens. The lady at the register asks to see my driver's liscense. NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe this is happening to me. Desperately I ask all the people behind me if they would take a check from me and purchase my cube for me. I get back nothing but dumb looks. You people suck, I think to myself. No matter, I WILL have a cube. I storm out of Wal-Mart and haul ass back to my house. Thankfully a friend of mine offered to spot me the money (I had a group of people waiting for me to return with the video games).

So everything turned out fine (except for my wallet) and I got a cube, but at what cost sanity?

Location: Danvers, Massachusetts

This is a little lengthy, but here goes:

I originally wanted to get my GameCube from Best Buy, as my cousin works there. On the night of the launch, I was wondering why the heck I didn't reserve on, and kept thinking how hard it was going to be to get one. I set my alarm clock for 5:30, and fall asleep. I wake up at 5:35, get dressed, and see my dad up. He's not going out for me, he's just going to work (Works for the city). At 6:00, my dad calls up and asks if I want a ride to Best Buy, since my cousin has to go to work early, and knows I want a GameCube. So I say OK and I'm picked up five minutes later. My cousin wants to get there early, so I can fend off a position in line. He speeds down the highway, going at 90 miles per hour (no joke), and when we look down at best buy, there seems to be no line of any sort. He told me I'm a lucky little s*it, you're getting a GameCube. So, he drives into the B.B. parking lot, and gets things prepared. It's now 6:30. I'm told to wait inside the mall (The stores other entrance is inside a mall). There was a line, but only of 9 people! Since there is a Target right next door, I peek over, no line yet. I talk with some of the other people, and peek over at Target every once in a while. After about 1/2 an hour, the Target Line builds up, and eventually grows into one gigantic blob. Meanwhile, Best Buy only has around 15 people in line. My Cousin pops out at around 7:15, and says that the stores going to open at 10:00, and that there's going to be 80 GameCubes on sale. I'm sure of getting one at this point. I look over at Target a few more times, the line getting increasingly larger. There are now over 700 people out there, and the store only had 72. The doors are opened up at 8:00, and everyone rushes in at once. Two people got trampled, and I felt bad for them, because they were also run over by a few shopping carts! The store sells out in about 10 minutes. I get a phone call from my dad, he says my aunt is coming down to get a cube too, and she shows up minutes later. She's also going to see the movie Harry Potter at 10:00 with her 10 year old daughter, and friend Conveniently there is a Loews Theater located in the mall as well. So, I wait around until 8:30, where a lady come out and hands us all tickets. I was number 10, my aunt was 23. I think there were still only about 25 people in line here. The lady asks that we come back at around 9:45 to get our GameCubes, and she then asks us to fill out a sheet telling which color we want, any accessories, games, and whatnot. I only filled out an Indigo GameCube and memory card, as I didn't have enough money for a game. My aunt fills hers out, and she puts down Super Monkey Ball for me, as she wants me to be able to play something when I bring the system home. I told her to count it as an early Christmas present. She also puts down Luigi's Mansion and Madden 2002. At around 9:00, my aunt has her daughter and her friend dropped off at the mall, and head down to get their tickets. She proctored them ahead of time, so she went in and out pretty fast. She dropped of the two kids in the theater and sits down there. I go back over to Best Buy, and wait out the next half hour. When the lady comes back, she has everyone get back in line in the order we were in previously. She calls us in by six, so I wait for the next group to be called. When I get in, I look over and get my pre made package. There was also a decently long table full of games and things there. I didn't get anything of course, so I went over to the check out. I wait in line to get checked out, and I end up getting moved over to another register. This register was being stupid, because the scanner wasn't working. The cashier tried to type it in, that doesn't work oddly. After about 5 minutes, a girl comes over and smashes the scanner against the table. It works now, and I pay for the cube. I show my receipt to the guy at the door, and exit the store. I wait for my aunt, and get my game. She also picked up an extra Luigi's Mansion, which she's giving to my father for Christmas. She now has to rush off to the movie, it's now about 10:10. She asks me to wait with my cousin outside the store, who is giving people the option sheets and numbered cards. She hands me her bag of stuff, and these packages are in clear plastic bags. So I feel like I have the highest capability in the store to get mugged right now. At this time, only 43 of 80 GameCubes have been sold. I call my mom for a ride, she gets there about twenty minutes later. I walk over to the car, and the car takes off! I start running, bags and all, toward the car.. She doesn't see me, and keeps going, and begins to circle the parking lot. So, here I am, in the open, with two GameCubes, An Extra Controller, two memory cards, Two Luigi's Mansion games, and a Madden 2002 game. I hid inside again, and waited until the car came around again. Some 7 year old spots me, and tries to steal my cube. His father comes up, and pleads for me to sell him a GameCube. I tell him to stand in line over at Best Buy. He's happy now. I now walk out again, and enter the car. My mom is oblivious of the fact that I came running toward the car. So, I get home at 11:00, set up my cube, and play Monkey Ball. After a while, my aunt comes to pick her package up, and tells me I can play around with her copy of Luigi. So, I do, and end up playing a faulty version There were graphic glitches EVERYWHERE! When she comes back I tell her about it, and advise her to take it back, and get it replaced. I then return to Monkey Ball, and play that for the rest of the night. And that's how my day ended.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!

Hi My names Jason.I'm usually on the ign GC genearal boards as jay3957.I wanted to show you my launch.I just got a GameCube

*jet black* I will be getting RL:2 for christmas with a memory card.I'll get somes games in the upcoming week. This is all I could afford lol.I went to walmart before midnight the 18th to get my GameCube there were aa line of 20 people lined up,walmart had a list of names to call out for gamecube. There was only 48 gamecubes in the store.I was the 21st person on the list.I just stood there in line talking to people around me,I see these punk little teenagers who think the xbox is so cool.I got sick of hearing them talk the gamecube down *oddly enough they were inline for one*go fig.I told them that how'll are you gonna play online?as xbox is broadband only and that only 10/20% of the population has broadband. Not much on a response I know they were ditzy.I can't help it but say xbox could be used as a big paperweight:) anyway I waited inline for nearly an hour and there were also older people getting cubes too even older than me and I'm 22.So it looked good for gamecube as everybody of all ages were there to buy it.I finally got my name called I was so happy and I got the color I wanted to boot : ) I'm so happy with my little joy.Now all I need is a game and I'll be in heaven.I have to wait till I get my check.

Saturday, November 17-- 7:30 PM. I got to my local Wal-Mart Supercenter and went up to the electronics counter to ask the lady there where they were selling GameCubes. I found out that they were selling 'em at the Layaway area, so I grabbed me a few gaming mags and headed on back. They put the line in the pillow and matress cover aisle in front of the layaway place, so I grabbed a couple of pillows and sat down. Heck, I would be there till midnight, might as well be comfortable. My mom's friend that brought me there bought a Dr. Pepper for me to drink while I waited... There were already 2 people in front of me when I got there, (actually there were 3, but only 2 of them were buying one) so I sat down and we talked about GCN for a while. About 30 minutes later, another guy came, then another, and another, and another... Eventually around 11 PM, the line was all the way up to about 50 people. Me and the other first about 5 or 6 people were just talking about random stuff from Conker's BFD to pizza. Pretty interesting. At about 10:45, they brought the boxes of GCN stuff (consoles, games, display cases, controllers, memory cards, you name it) to the layaway counter to start setting up. I walked up there (one of the guys there saved my spot) and got a peek at the stuff they had, then went back to sit down at around 11:15. I stood up the rest of the time because I was getting pretty tired of sitting, and when there was about 30 minutes left, everyone was getting really excited about it. Finally, at 12:01 A.M., they let us go 2 at a time (one at each check out counter) to pick up our GameCubes and whatever accessories and/or games we needed. finally, around 12:05, I got my Jet Black GameCube, Memory Card 59, and extra Jet Black controller. I already had picked up THPS3 the Friday before then and Star Wars Rogue Leader on Saturday. I went home, plugged it in, and turned it on. The first game I played was Rogue Leader, and it OWNZ!!! I played the first level, couldn't beat it that night though. I played that game for about an hour, then played THPS3 until about 2:30 AM then finally went to bed because I couldn't keep my eyes open. Played it all day yesterday and for about 2 hours today. GameCube rules. Peace.

I worked all summer at a hotel ,suffering horrible smells and not sleeping

in,luckly the summer was warm and not hot.

All through the work season the boss's kid, Clifton (who is 19), asked about

the Cube and the games and asked about advise.I told him what i learned from

this site,along with others.

Soon the summer was over and the wait begining.Of corse I also bought other

stuff, but most of the cash I made went into the bank.

Months pasted

The launch date changed, mad at first, then the reason made sense.

Then came weeks to the launch I began getting dreams, setting it up,playing

it,being Luigi and sucking up ghost.

Then the night before there was a metoir strom, and I watched it.I was

thinking of the Cube and I looked down the road towords the town I was

getting the Cube and a huge metor with a large tail zoomed down that way,a

good sign.

Nov 18, 2001.The day I've been waiting for,My sister,dad and myself loaded

into the rust-mobile and we were off. After a 1 hour car drive through fog

and a battery crisies we made it at the mall.

We did the little shoping and then we made are way to Electronic Boutique

and we looked around. After a bit I made my way up and stood in line behind a

kid my age(17) and after them and a nice chat about upcoming games,I recived

my Cube!

Hi. Just wanted to share my experience from launch day. I went to the Wal-Mart around the corner from my house at midnight. I know, i know...what was i thinking getting there that late? Anyway, as i am walking through the store towards the Electronics department i see smiling people walking by with Gamecubes in hand. I begin to get nervous. I get back to the Electronics department and don't see anyone around. I ask a store clerk if they have anymore Gamecubes. He says they are selling them back in the Layaway department. I hurry back there and see a line with about 20 people in it, and then i see the available gamecubes stacked up behind the counter. I count six of them. Uh oh. I see a couple of clerks behind the counter selling them and one of them looks over at me and shakes their head. If my story ended here it would be a tragedy, but this night had a silver lining. :-) I left that Wal-Mart at around 12:30am and decided even though my chances of Gamecube bliss were probably over for this evening, i would try one more place. I headed for another Wal-Mart in town that was about 20 to 25 minutes away. All the way there i kept telling myself that this was pointless, and i should just try again in the morning. There was another part of me though that kept hope alive and said just have a little faith. I arrived at the Wal-Mart and didn't see any Gamecube carrying customers. Great, i thought, they are already done selling them. It was 1:00am after all. I went back to the Electronics area and saw a lone clerk and no customers at all. I walked down the games aisle with my head hanging in defeat. That's when i saw them. A case full of Gamecubes. I couldn't believe it. It was like no one in town even thought to look here. They were just sitting there waiting for me. :-) I quickly got the clerk to retrieve a black one for me. I also got Rogue Leader, Luigi's Mansion, and NHL Hitz 2002. I left that Wal-Mart with a huge smile on my face. On that night, i must have been one of the luckiest

and happiest people anywhere. So, there's my story. Sorry it was so long, but it was a long night. Later.
