The Road to Wii Fit

Arms and Legs

by Steven Rodriguez - December 31, 2007, 12:00 am EST

Here are some games you can play to help you get in shape for Nintendo's impending fitness revolution.

Arms

Rayman Raving Rabbids - Wii

The rabbids in Ubisoft's Wii party game series have pretty scrawny arms for the tasks they perform. Because of their weakness, the heavy work is dumped on the humans that control them. (That's you.) No matter how you hold the Wii Remote while playing, you're going to be moving it vigorously. Eventually, your arms will tire. If you are pooping out sooner than your buddies, that's a sure sign you need to stay on the Raving Rabbids Remote Pumping Program to bulk up those arms. If you've got the stamina to keep at it, consider taping the Wii controller to some really heavy rocks for an extra challenge.

Wii Sports - Wii

For the fitness-minded Wii owner on a tight budget, the best upper-body workout you can get is the free game that came with the console. Tennis, bowling, baseball, and boxing will make your limbs ache with pain as you pummel your buddy in the boxing ring or attempt to obliterate 91 bowling pins with a single ball. (If you're getting a workout from playing golf, you probably have a Wii Remote-shaped hole in your television.) There will be a lot of sport-like activities in Wii Fit, so if you want to get a head start on heading soccer balls, slip that Wii Sports disc into your Wii.

Hands

DK Jungle Beat - GC

The obvious choice for a hand workout would be one of the bongo drum games on GameCube. Donkey Konga is good, but Jungle Beat is better. Instead of doing normal things with your hands, like playing the drums or clapping, DKJB makes you use them to play a platforming game. Wii Fit will throw you a similar curve ball in that you won't be playing any of its mini-games with your hands, but instead, with your entire body. The best way to make this unusual transition is to play an unusual game. It helps that Jungle Beat is awesome fun to play.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock - Wii

A hand without strong fingers isn't of much use. There's only one game out there that will give your digits a serious workout. The Guitar Hero games let you emulate playing a real-life guitar, allowing you to play legendary music from elite artists. It has a side effect of putting an enormous strain on your fingers and wrists, particularly those of your strumming hand. It works out nicely, however, since right-handed players tend to put the brunt of the Guitar Hero-ing on their left hand by pounding those frets. The frequent use of your off-hand while playing will balance out the normal, everyday use of your dominant hand. Remember how we said balance was the most important thing to have when playing Wii Fit? There you go.

Legs

Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party - Wii

Dance Dance Revolution is an obvious choice for giving your legs a good workout. Actually, you could argue that you'd get a more intensive workout with DDR given what we've seen of Wii Fit so far. Wii Fit's music-stepping mini-game sure doesn't look as fun or as an intense a workout as Hottest Party. You can't use the Wii Remote and nunchuk to workout your arms and your legs in Wii Fit, either. If you're a DDR master, you'll be more than ready to take on the challenge of Wii Fit. At least, until you need to strike yoga poses.

World Class Track Meet - NES

If you want the ultimate leg workout, you're going to need to dust off the old NES Power Pad and break out Nintendo's original Olympics game. There's nothing fancy about Track Meet, other than whoever runs in place the fastest will win the sprint races, and whoever jumps the highest will win the jumping contests. This game is sure to give you a good jumping workout, because it's remarkably easy to leap superhuman distances. Of course, that has nothing to do with cheating by jumping off the Power Pad and then jumping back onto it at the last moment, but rather, your amazing leg strength. Who needs Wii Fit when you can long jump forty feet?
