Paper Mario Wii U Title In Testing?

After extracting himself from a jam, the flat one may get some additional definition.

Intelligent Systems has been working on a Paper Mario title for the Wii U and the game is in testing according to several sources close to Nintendo.

It isn’t immediately clear if the title is a remake of an existing title or a brand new game. Intelligent Systems was rumored to be hiring staff last spring and mentioning a new Paper Mario game was in development. The timeline matches the time the Japanese version of Fire Emblem Fates would be wrapping development.

The project is definitely slated to be a Wii U game, and other platforms are not being talked about as far as we know.

It would be cool if this was a "proper" Paper Mario like the N64 and Cube ones.  That's a good sort of title to keep the Wii U afloat before the NX comes out.  I wouldn't be surprised if it was an HD remake though.

If it's true, I doubt it's a new Paper Mario. Not with the Wii U at death's door. It's probably just Thousand Year Door HD: something they can just **** out in a few months.

I'm not so sure Wii U's death is quite as imminent as everyone's assuming. Sure, all signs to NX launching this year, but there's also a lot of hinting that branding will include both a handheld and console iterations-- I have the sneaking suspicion that only the handheld will launch this year and the console will come next spring at the earliest. Especially when you consider Wii U still has Zelda and Star Fox Zero in the pipeline, the latter of which could have been released in 2015 if they really wanted to (then just polish it later with post-release updates). The fact that they chose to push it back altogether tells me they're trying to string along a few releases across 2016 to keep Wii U alive until next year. That being said, it wouldn't shock if this truly were a new Paper Mario... then again it wouldn't shock me if it were just an HD port of an old game either.

It could be real, I think the timeline makes sense. Whether it's a new game or some sort of port/remake, it would make for good filler on Wii U and also help fill the Mario quota for the year.

Or they just use the Thousand Year Door's assets and core engine to make a Wii U sequel. Everyone felt that was the best for the series. I'd love to see a direct sequel because Nintendo tends to knock those out of the park, especially when they are in the twilight of a console's life and get really creative with them (Mario Galaxy 2, Pikmin 2, Radiant Dawn, Majora's Mask).

Yes, please.

Radiant Dawn wasn't a late era release, it was a early era release. It was a Wii game released 3 months after the system launched. MM got panned critically and in sales, it was only like 2 or 3 years ago that it suddenly started getting a lot of love.

With all indications that NX won't come out til next year (no way is it coming out in 2016, and no credible source thinks it will either), a new Paper Mario game would help be a great holdover for Wii U. Hell, i'd even be happy if they started finally selling GameCube games on the eShop so I could download Thousand-Year Door.

Oh hey, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is my favorite RPG of all time.

What's that? You want to please people who are Wii U owners now? WELL THEN MAKE A SPIRITUAL SEQUEL FOR GOODNESS' SAKE.

It's been over 3 years since the last Paper Mario so IS has had enough time to make a new one.  Plus the Paper Mario games are made on low budgets anyway so it's not like Nintendo is wasting valuable time and resources to keep the Wii U alive.  Paper Mario isn't going to be a killer app that sells the NX and since the Wii U still has pretty good sized hardcore Mario fanbase, it's a nice way to keep the hardcore fans who own a Wii U still pleased while making a decent profit as well.

Seriously, the question isn't going to be if it's a remaster or a new game since it'll be a new game.  The question is if it'll finally be a real RPG again or is Miyamoto going to mess things up again.  Sticker Star was suppose to be an RPG like TTYD, but after Miyamoto was shown an early demo, he told the team it looked like a rehash and his advice was to remove everything that basically made it an RPG in the first place.  When this man has no problem allowing the NSMB team to make 4 games that are incredably similar to each other but flips his shit when an RPG is similar to each other, that easily shows how much natural hatred he has toward this genre of gaming.

There's a reason Miyamoto has nothing to do with all of Nintendo's other RPG franchises.  Hopefully the Paper Mario team doesn't invite him to look at their game this time since they should know by now anything RPG related he's not going to like.

I haven't played a Paper Mario game since it came out on the N64.  I would gladly welcome a new on the Wii U.  It was such a memorable title for me.

michaelbaysuperfan616January 25, 2016

I am not sure which I would prefer a complete remake of the original or a completely original game based on that games style? I didn't get into latter games they were just too cutesy for me. What appealed to me about the N64 game was it was still fresh switching from 2D to 3D gaming to getting a 2D style game on the N64 felt kind of refreshing in a lot of ways. Latter games though, especially with Wii pretty much being a nostalgia beast, just felt like there was nothing special about them the gimmick wore off for me. I don't mind the humor in a Mario RPG game but I wish they would revisit the SNES game's mechanics and do a proper sequel to that or a complete full on HD-Remake like FF7. For that, save it for NX though because Wii U would be a total waste.

jarodeaJanuary 27, 2016

If it's a remake then Nintendo will be giving me fewer and fewer reasons to hook up my Gamecube.  Well, that's a lie since I doubt the Rogue Squadron games will ever be remade.  If it isn't a remake I really hope they follow TTYD and not their more recent RPG Mario output.

StratosJanuary 28, 2016

Poor Rogue Squadron. I'm still hoping someone has a completed copy of the Wii RS trilogy remake and they leak it online. I would love to play it. Reportedly they had it fully complete and ready to go before they went under.
