Makes sense.

Leo13August 20, 2013

If it's gold with a triforce on it, it will sell!

MiyamotoAugust 20, 2013

I love WW but this game is not bundle worthy.

Leo13August 20, 2013

Wow Miyamoto, I've always wanted more of your perspectives, so are there any games coming in the near future that are bundle worthy? And what makes a game bundle worthy?

I would say WW, Mario 3D World would be good.

I would say X HAS to be put in a bundle! That's the one I'm absolutely the MOST excited for.

Ian SaneAugust 20, 2013

Putting a game in a bundle suggests a certain prestige, like this game is a big deal that people will buy the console for.  So a remake of a ten year old game is the choice for the Wii U?  If people think that this is one of the Wii U's best games, it frankly looks pretty bad for the Wii U.  You have a system that's struggling to sell and the big hyped up Christmas title is a remake?  Mario 3D Would would be the more logical choice as it's a Wii U exclusive.

Mop it upAugust 20, 2013

Wind Waker HD is literally the worst game they could choose for a bundle.

AdrockAugust 20, 2013

And yet people would buy it because it's Zelda and a special edition (even if it's still just a black console). Maybe not the best deal considering it comes with a 10 year old game, but as a bundle, yeah, I get it.

AdrockAugust 20, 2013

I was too lazy to post this earlier (it was nap time), but bundling an old Zelda game already happened. Did anyone complain about this one?

Kindly put the negativity card back in the deck. Please and thank you.

Unless Nintendo gives the Gamepad a gold trim, I still don't see the point. Maybe bundle in a gold wiimote plus and nunchuck?

Leo13August 21, 2013

As I said earlier make it gold and add a triforce and people will buy it. Especially when you know that it's supposed to only cost $350. I told 1 buddy that doesn't already have a Wii U about it and he told me that if they do it that'll be the straw the breaks the camels' back for him and he'll become a Wii U owner.

AdrockAugust 21, 2013

They don't even need to do that. Take the even the Basic set, bundle it with The Wind Waker, and have someone draw a Triforce on top of the console with gold marker and people would buy it because it's Zelda. Sad, but true.

CericAugust 21, 2013

Swapping out Nintendo Land for Wind Waker is an excellent move for Nintendo.  Making it as awesome looking as they did w/ the 3DS would prompt some minor double dipping.

That bundle at $350 would be the straw that broke a lot of peoples back.

Ian SaneAugust 21, 2013

Anyone else think it's funny that Nintendo went all in this tablet, effectively forcing us to buy a very expensive controller while putting up with last gen hardware, and they might switch out Nintendo Land, which is still the best demonstration of the controller, for a ten year old game that doesn't need the tablet at all?  How do you sell this thing if the games don't even need it?  For $350 they could probably have gone with a very normal controller and beefier specs that compare better to the competing consoles due out later this year.  Without the tablet the Wii U is a stupid waste of time.  The only reason the Wii got away with being a gen behind was because of it's unique controller.  The Wii U struggles and Nintendo has seemed to be less and less interested in the whole unique feature that justifies the console's whole existence in the first place.  Nintendo Land might be a glorified tech demo but at least a new Wii U owner gets an idea right off the bat of what the console is all about.  Last gen hardware for nearly the price of next gen hardware with an expensive controller that doesn't seem necessary is a pretty hard sell.

I don't think this compares to the 3DS Zelda bundle because when that came out there was already demand and interest in the 3DS.  The Wii U's problem is that few feel there is a reason to own one and the chance to play a souped up Gamecube game isn't going to be it.  Now if Mario 3D World creates that interest then this bundle might sell.  Nintendo probably figures that bundling Mario 3D World is a waste, hoping that people will buy this bundle and then make an additional purchase of Mario 3D World.

Ian... stahp. jus stahp.

No, seriously. We get it. You hate Nintendo.

pokepal148Spencer Johnson, Contributing WriterAugust 21, 2013

we don't even know if its replacing nintendoland or anything,

Leo13August 21, 2013

ZombieU bundle had BOTH Zombie U AND Nintendo Land. With the Wii, when they came out with Wii Sports Resort they bundled the Wii with BOTH Sports AND Sports Resort (I know cause that's when I bought my Wii) there's nothing to say they won't do the bundle with a Deluxe Wii U Nintendo Land and Zelda for $350. People want a price cut, but Nintendo isn't going to give it, but if they sold the Wii U and 2 quality top notch games for $350 would that get all you whiners to buy it?

Agent-X-August 21, 2013

I think this is a pretty good idea for a game that is basically a remake of a very popular title. Casual customers did not bite on Nintendoland and enthusiast gamers have been been waiting on a deal. This game is unlikely to sell by itself, and the Wii U needs a greater audience. A Zelda bundle is almost always a good idea, and with Mario 3D World coming out, I can see Nintendo fans finally biting.

What Nintendo fan wouldn't want a Wii U Zelda bundle + Mario 3D World for Christmas?

Other than Ian... ?

As a gift I don't have to pay for that would cool if I could swap out Wind Waker for something else since I already have it.  What Nintendo fan doesn't already have Wind Waker?  That's the whole reason why I don't think it's a good choice to be the Wii U title to push hard.  Because it is a re-release it is unessential and not a good reason to buy a whole new console.  And if you're some hardcore Nintendo nut that can't help but repurchase games you already own, then you probably already have a Wii U.  You probably bought it on day one with no hesitation.  Selling to the diehard Nintendo fans isn't Nintendo's goal because I'm pretty sure that's who has bought the Wii U.  They ideally want to sell this to people who need more than a Triforce on the box to decide to pick the Wii U over the PS4 or XB1.

"This is for the same old Nintendo franchises and jack shit else" is NOT the message Nintendo should want to promote with the Wii U.  That assumption from the public is why the console isn't selling.  Pushing Wind Waker hard will just reaffirm that negative assumption.

azekeAugust 21, 2013

While i have no interest in buying Wind Waker (game looks fine as is), i'm pretty sure this bundle is not worse than Hitler.

Who said that was the only game people would buy? "Yeah, I'm just going to drop hundreds of dollars on a new console for this one remake and no other games for it," said no one ever.

Right. Because that's also what happened with the Ocarina of Time 3D bundle. Facepalm your mom.

You might have a point in an alternate reality where Nintendo only had The Wind Waker HD this holiday season and no other titles. I'm really having trouble understanding your logic. A Wind Waker bundle is Nintendo telling the public they have nothing else... right when they're finally getting some good titles prepped for release? Whatever you say.

I thought this was a bad idea too, however it was an even worse idea to have the only big games in the first 8 months be N64 ports. The Wii U however, has better games available than a port, and that's why I feel Nintendo should be bundling any one of them instead of a port. I feel they should be selling the Wii U on new games, not old ones. I s'pose this doesn't mean they won't still make a Super Mario 3D Land bundle, but it does make that less likely.

This is certainly better than no bundle, but if this happens, I hope it isn't the only bundle this holiday.

AdrockAugust 21, 2013

Selling a game separately yields greater profit margins. I believe the idea is that people will buy Nintendo hardware for new first party titles like Super Mario 3D World so Nintendo typically doesn't bundle a big first party title when it first comes out. Nintendo did eventually bundle Super Mario 3D Land (pre-installed) a year later. The Wind Waker HD, as a remake, cost Nintendo less than a brand new game. It's easier for them to sacrifice profits on a remake than it is on a new game, but it still has brand recognition. People want a new Mario and will buy a console for it, might as well get Zelda too. If I didn't already have a Wii U, I'd rather have The Wind Waker HD than Nintendo Land.

idk i think nintendo would want to bundle a Wii U game with the Wii U system. :smug:

EasyCureAugust 22, 2013

Just to play devils advocate, and not because I share Ian's opinion, what if a Zelda bundle is just s way of Nintendo saying: hey get ready for another GameCube, we're going to blow our load with franchises, do get ready with this!

Of course, you'd have to ignore the (few) new experiences available, or soon to be available on the system, to believe a Zelda bundle means Nintendo is essentially giving up on the console.

I think at this point, fans and gamers alike would be happy with Nintendo if they just stopped being so secretive with what they're working on. Show us a beta you're working on with some brand new ideas and characters, give gamers hope that things will get better. When I was younger we had screens of Majoras Mask in Nintendo Power and gamers would speculate and wonder.. Now we get nothing but a promise that games are coming. To this day I'm curious what Conker 64 played like before it became Conker's Bad Fur Day, or how much of Dinosaur Planet remains before the Star Fox Adventures overhaul.

Then again, for all the Ians of the world....

"there can be no true despair without hope." This would be their train of thought, when time after time a new game or idea I'd shown in early stages, only to be canceled or revamped in a Nintendo franchise mold. But I guess that's why Nintendo started showing games only when they were close to completion. Thanks a lot, cry babies.

Ian SaneAugust 22, 2013

I don't think Nintendo is making any intentional statement with a Wind Waker bundle, I just don't think the public will infer the correct message if the game most associated with the Wii U this Christmas is a remake of an old game.  Nintendo would probably just be thinking "hey, it's Zelda and people like that".  With the Wii U not selling very well Nintendo is walking on egg shells and should be very careful about how the Wii U is presented to the public.

By Christmas the Wii U actually will have some good exclusives so they should make sure everyone knows that and putting attention on Wind Waker seems counter-intuitive.

Not caring about them bundling Wind Waker HD?  Fine.

Actively saying you hate it and think it's stupid?  A little silly.  It's a better value proposition than Nintendoland bundled-in, and they can proactively continue doing things like this to prolong the inevitable price drop that people are awaiting.

The problem is, I'm not convinced the Wii U will sell very well at its current price. If Nintendo really are not going to drop the price, then I think that a bundle with Super Mario 3D World will sell a lot more than the system and game will separately. With how poorly it's selling, Nintendo should do everything they can to ensure things pick up. If sales were better then yeah, I'd agree bundles aren't needed, but given the circumstances I think this would be better.

Also, this bundle could still contain Nintendo Land. After all, the ZombiU bundle has it.

Luigi DudeAugust 23, 2013

Well at least they made the controller a special Zelda one.
