A Look at the Parts of ARMS Not in the Testpunch

More than meets the online limbs.

If you have a Switch, you had the chance last weekend to try out the online play in Arms courtesy of the Testpunch demo. While the online multiplayer is a focal point of the Arms experience, that’s not all there is to see and do in Nintendo’s new fighting game. Check out what else is nestled underneath the spiraling limbs of these characters.

Grand Prix is the name for the story mode. Outside of some goofy writing, each character’s trek through the Arms Grand Prix isn’t filled with anything more than punching and gameplay. It consists of a bout against every other fighter; Seven of them are traditional best-of-three battles, while two pull from the V-Ball, Hoops, and Skill Shot.

One of the things that stood out to me during the TestPunch was how nice and varied the Party mode online setup was. You’d bounce between one-on-one matches to team battles to big free-for-alls to mini-games. It’s such a fun way to experience elements of Arms that I was hoping something existed in an offline capacity. Well, it kind of does in Arms Test. This mode lets you endlessly go through different battles with a randomly generated set of Arms to choose from. Not sure what Arms would go well with certain characters? Spend some time with Arms Test and just see what works for the character of your choice.

Get Arms is the way you can unlock other Arms for different characters. In case you didn’t know, 30 selectable Arms are in the base game, with each of the 10 characters starting off with three unique ones. Through Get Arms, you can acquire the other 27 Arms for your characters. It’s a little bit of a slog considering it’s all random, but a high score elements keeps it a little engaging as you build up your stockade of weaponry.

1-on-100 is a single-player mode that is a little one-note, but definitely a unique test of your burgeoning Arms skill. Faceless Arms fighters pop up and you have to strike them down as quickly as possible. At first, they are all weak and ineffectual, but as you progress, they start fighting back more effectively. The challenge then becomes to knock them all out faster and faster.
