Take a look at some of the characters you'll meet in this upcoming strategy RPG; they may be familiar!

What we know about Code Name: S.T.E.A.M is that it is an upcoming strategy game developed by Intelligent Systems due out on March 13. As far as characters go, we know that Abraham Lincoln plays a role in assembling others to help thwart a new alien invasion that is set to take over the reimagined steampunked Earth. But a little known fact is that many of the characters in the game are based on icons from famous children’s novels that take place roughly around the same time as the game--the late 1800s. Let’s take a look at five of these characters, where they are from, and what we know about their purpose on the battlefield!

Tom Sawyer

Where he is from: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, by Mark Twain. Tom is very charismatic and convincing, considering one of the most famous tales in the novel is of him conning others into having the privilege of painting a fence for him and reaping the rewards. He, along with his friend Huckleberry Finn, get into a lot of trouble (and some adventure of course) as they live along the Mississippi River.

In the game: Tom Sawyer is the scout who can deploy mines, tricking enemies into traps that will lay waste to them. His special weapon is the punch gun, which in fact stuns enemies by punching them.

Henry Fleming

Where he is from: The Red Badge of Courage, written by Stephen Crane. Taking place during the Civil War, Fleming is a young private in the Union army who flees the battlefield when faced with danger. He eventually comes to terms with his own cowardice, however, and returns to his comrades in order to take on the Confederate army with newfound courage.

In the game: Of course, he is depicted as the All-American hero. He’s the guy you’ll be controlling throughout the game, using the Eagle Rifle to deal damage. His big attack, the Eagle Strike, has him turning into an eagle to attack enemies and cause major damage.

Tiger Lily

Where she is from: Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie. In the novel, she is a Native American princess of the Piccaninny tribe living on the island of Neverland. She attempts to sneak aboard Captain Hook’s ship armed with a knife but is captured and left at Marooner’s Rock to drown. She is saved by Peter Pan when he imitates Captain Hook’s voice and orders the pirates to set her free.

In the game: She is a healer who, as the name would suggest, heals allies. The technique Healing Wind will help surrounding party members recover HP, including herself.

Lion

Where he is from: The Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum. He is a wimpy lion who seeks the help of the Wizard of Oz to combat his cowardice that he feels is impeding on his own life. It takes a long, harrowing journey, however, to discover that he never needed the Wizard’s guidance; rather, he had it in him the whole time, though he needed to drink a potion of “courage” in order to realize it.

In the game: He’s no longer a cowardly lion as he’s a great asset on the battlefield. Wielding a larger amount of HP than others in the game, he’ll be able to maneuver around the field quickly. His big move is the Mighty Roar, in which he--well--roars viciously around his enemies to heal heavy damage.

John Henry

Where he is from: The folk tale regarding the legend of John Henry, a hard working miner. The story goes is that he challenged a steam hammer to a competition and actually managed to beat the machine using only a twenty-pound hammer. However, his heart gave out due to the stress of beating the machine, and he ended up dying as a result.

In the game: Instead of a twenty pound hammer, John Henry is the explosives expert, which still makes sense given his mining background. He’ll use bombs, primarily grenades, to ward off opponents nearby.

I suggest looking through this article a second time, I spotted a number of repetitive portions.

Wait, Tiger Lilly heals the enemies? Why what is the purpose of this. I know Intelligent Systems makes fun games that this doesn't seem very "Intelligent"

I mean she could, but her real purpose is in fact to heal party members. Fixed :)

No his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit
