This story-heavy preview details some of the early events in Bayonetta 2. Spoiler warning!

Check out our last Bayonetta 2 preview for more general thoughts on what makes Bayonetta tick in this Wii U exclusive. Going further into the game, I still feel the same about the overall mechanics and gameplay. For this preview, I would like to focus more on the story, so if you are not keen on spoilers, you better to stop reading now.

When we last left Bayonetta, the soul of the witch Jeanne was dragged to hell for reasons unknown. It turns out that something is disrupting the balance between the trinity of worlds, making the conflict even more layered. Infernal Demons are out of control, heaven forces are back in full force, and the world is going totally mental. Then there is the boy Loki, who is with Bayonetta and needs to get Fimbulventr for reasons unknown. This mysterious place houses the gates to the various realms and it is here where Bayonetta and Loki probably split ways.

There are interesting things going on with Loki, though. All the angels are specifically after him and while the duo are not on speaking terms, Bayonetta protects him from a mysterious cloaked man. You will have to wait until the game is out in October to find out about the cloaked man, but regardless, the Paradiso army is certainly going all out to try to get the boy. The third chapter of the game highlights this well, because the angelic serpent called Glamor swallows up the boy and intends to bring him to Paradiso. Bayonetta takes chase over a water cyclone that, naturally, she has to surf on. The climax of this chapter places you at the gates of heaven squaring off against Glamor. Chapter three is by far my favorite so far and it showcases exactly what makes Bayonetta so fun, with action-packed gameplay and a ridiculous story.

The fifth chapter, called The Cathedral of Cascades, continues the serpentine trend. The next transformation for our heroine, first showed here, is an underwater snake, which makes exploring underwater sections much easier. In general, though, it is just an entertaining way of moving around the world. This chapter is not all just fun and games though, as the story further drives home that the balance between light and dark is off. Out of nowhere, a mechanical Inferno creature called Pain starts attacking Bayonetta and Loki, making Bayonetta have to fight the creature.

After openly wondering why the Infernals are after her, the pair makes it further in the Cathedral. Luka, who was also in the last game, shows up and details the Legend of Aesir. There are three realities: Light, Darkness, and Chaos. Earth was born from chaos and had a leader called Aesir. Aesir's eyes were the eyes that created the world and gave this reality shape. The god, however, realized that humans had no free will and created that will by bringing the Eyes of the World to fruition. While Bayonetta is interested in the story, she becomes fed up with Luka's chatter and promptly kicks his butt. Right after, the angelic forces return to attack (and lose to, of course) Bayonetta. During that chapter, you also control Loki as he runs away from a heavenly creature. The hero is kind of hard to control, but the segment made for an exciting end to a lengthy chapter.

So what happens next? Will Bayonetta and Loki reach the top of Fimbulventr proper? You will be able to figure it out in October as that is when Bayonetta 2 launches in the west!
