The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction

by Karl Castaneda - July 6, 2005, 9:16 pm EDT

Hulk smash misconceptions of inadequacy!

Let’s face facts. Bruce Banner is boring. Sure, he may be a brilliant scientist, but when it comes down to it, he’s just not a compelling character. However, his brutish alter ego does more than raise a few eyebrows in interest. The Incredible Hulk has been around for over 43 years now, but unfortunately, he hasn’t yet been translated properly in the digital realm of video games. After 2003’s The Hulk was met with a somewhat lukewarm reception, developer Radical Games went back to drawing board to create what could be the Hulk’s true coming out party in the world of interactive entertainment.

Ultimate Destruction’s story, penned by Paul Jenkins (of Wolverine: Origins fame), deals with Banner’s tried-and-true hobby of ridding himself of the towering beast within, this time through hypnosis. Unfortunately for him, the world’s not ready to let go of the green beast just yet and we find Bruce being hunted down by Emil Blonsky, a military man who’s after the Hulk’s god-like power. Once he harnesses it, though, he’s unable to maintain control, and thus The Abomination is born, Hell-bent on annihilating you. Prepare to fight for your life while tearing the planet a new one.

Hulk’s big draw is the GTA-like sense of free-roaming environments. You’re able to explore vast cities, leaving your surroundings however you see fit. If you want to pick up a streetlight and pound cars into the ground, you can do that. If you want to wall-jump between towers, causing massive craters all along the way, you can do that. If you want to pulverize your enemies upon impact, you can do that. Needless to say, your appetite for destruction will be satisfied. Some would say to ultimate proportions.

As far as the aesthetics go, Ultimate Destruction has it where it counts. In stark contrast to his 2003 cel-shaded look, Hulk is painted to stunning realism. Tons of detail has been put into this game to make your ravages seem as authentic as possible. Along with star-studded voice acting by Neal McDonough (Minority Report, Star Trek: First Contact) and Ron Pearlman (Hellboy, Blade II), you can expect a stellar audio presentation as well.

The Ultimate Destruction begins August 23rd.
