Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

by Karl Castaneda - June 24, 2005, 3:16 pm EDT

And now for the next chapter of the Viewtiful Joe Saga… Oh, wait. No, this is a side-story.

Gossip is streaming throughout Movie Land that Captain Blue is having trouble with the star of his new movie. Seeking to stabilize the set and push forward with his production schedule, Blue is holding a special tournament to determine the lead actor or actress for his brand new film. It’s your chance to fight for the top billing in Clover’s newest project in the Viewtiful Joe lineage, Viewtiful Joe: VFX Battle.

Although it's a fighting game, VFX Battle stays true to the series. It’ll still be cel-shaded (and gorgeous), presented in 2-D side-scrolling levels, and Movie Land’s infamous VFX powers will be just as prevalent as before. Since it is a fighting game, though, you can expect a bunch of characters to choose from. Fans will be quick to recognize the regulars; Joe, Sylvia, Alastor, and Captain Blue himself, but you might be a tad confused when you see that characters from the anime (which, thus far, has only been aired in Japan) taking up the fight for celluloid stardom as well. So far Captain Blue Jr., a tiny-tike version of the elderly Captain Blue, and Sprocket, a steely-eyed ice-princess, have been confirmed to appear.

Players can fight alone, go through the story with a partner in co-op mode, and can even duke it out in a one-on-one battle. Some of you may be wondering how you’ll be able to use your VFX abilities with more than one character on-screen. Slow and Mach Speed work just like they do in previous incarnations, with your opponent affected just like any normal enemy. However, it’s a tad different for the Zoom power. This is where Clover’s new feature comes in. You’ll have to try your hardest to pull off stunning combos and moves (similar to the challenges present in the 36 Chambers, an extra mode from Viewtiful Joe 2), because if you can indeed show yourself to be the most Viewtiful, the camera will zoom in on you, allowing for more potent attacks. To put it in simplest terms, this is a fight to see who can hog more camera-time.

Always an entertaining series, you can expect VFX Battle to be another fantastic release from Clover when it arrives this fall.
