Charge up those plasma blasters.

Back in the olden days of gaming, space shooters were on top of the world. With classics such as Space Invaders and Yar’s Revenge in mind, Majesco is seeking to give the genre a much needed revival with the release of Nanostray on the DS. Following the story of a pilot who has lost his memory in the heat of battle, you’ve got one task and one task alone: get to the destination marked on your console.

The first thing you’ll notice about Nanostray is its visuals, which are absolutely stunning. Combining the old-school feel of a 16-bit shooter with modern technology is a great idea, and this game shows us why, running at an astounding 60 frames per second. Even though you’ll have a top-down display, it never seems as though you’re just a spectator. The graphics do a great job of pulling you right in. Sound-wise, it’s just what you’d expect: the sound of lasers, explosions, and techno music. As far as presentation, Nanostray has already proven itself.

What will really sell this game, though, is its gameplay. Using the touch screen, you’ll be able to switch weapons on the fly, gain access to live radar, and control your movement in hyperspace. With over ten levels, you’ll be flying over all types of environments, from subterranean minefields to arctic mountains to seas of lava.

Adding to your power, you’ll be able to upgrade your weapons with the points racked up from causing all sorts of trouble, ensuring that you’ll soon be the new Space King in town. And if someone dares to challenge your crown? No problem, as Nanostray supports both co-op and head-to-head fighting with wireless functionality.

The developer, Shin’en, has had a lot experience in this field with their Game Boy Advance series, Iridion, assuring that Nanostray will be a big hit with shooter buffs. Set to release this summer, be sure to keep an eye on this game until then.
