Mario Golf: Advance Tour

by Jon Lindemann - June 15, 2004, 7:27 am EDT

We've all wished for a golf RPG at some time in our lives. Finally, Mario has answered our prayers!

Mario Golf: Advance Tour is advertised as "Role-Playing Golf". That may not sound too interesting to some of you, but that'll

change when you realize it's developed by Camelot Software Planning. They're the team responsible for creating the classic GBA RPGs Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age. If Camelot means anything, it's great graphics and high-quality role-playing action. Combine that with the strong pedigree and high fun factor of the Mario Golf series, and Mario Golf: Advance Tour looks like a winner.

This time around, players aren't necessarily controlling Mario and his friends on the links. In true RPG style, you create

your own characters and improve their golfing skill attributes (Drive, Height, Shot, Impact, Control and Spin) through

competition, earning both experience points and custom golf clubs along the way. Game modes include Story, Quick Game, and

Multiplayer, and there's even a Glossary to explain golfing terminology to newcomers.

In Story mode the ultimate goal is to get an invitation to compete against the inhabitants of the Mushroom Kingdom (Mario,

Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Donkey Kong are confirmed opponents). You'll start at the Marion Country Club, getting advice from golf pros and running through some tutorial holes. Soon you're travelling from country club to country club, participating in tournaments, playing mini-games, and engaging club champions in one-on-one challenges. Some tournaments can be played with a partner, which should make for some fun multiplayer action.

Advance Tour will feature vibrantly colorful graphics true to the Mario universe. Those familiar with the Golden Sun series will notice that the "Overworld" areas of the game use the Golden Sun engine, right down to having the same chirpy sound for speech and the emotion bubbles that appear over characters' heads.

Like Mario Golf on the GameBoy Color, Advance Tour can be connected to its console big brother via the GameCube-GBA link cable. Characters - both those you create and some you play against - can be transferred back and forth between Advance Tour and Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on the GameCube. Custom player taunts created on the GBA can be transferred to the GameCube

as well. Advance Tour also features unlockable content that opens up after it has been connected to the GCN version. Players can battle it out head-to-head using either the GBA link cable or the upcoming Game Boy Wireless Adapter. It certainly seems that this game won't be lacking for replay value.

Mario Golf: Advance Tour looks to continue the franchise's tradition of not-so-serious golfing action, but with a little more depth this time around. Golf fans had better get ready!
