Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

by Ty Shughart - July 15, 2003, 7:24 pm EDT

I love everything about this game except "shell" puns.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the GameCube is based on the new incarnation of the cartoon airing on Fox. The four turtles (Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo) each have unique personalities, weapons and abilities.

The new series follows the original comic book more closely than the original cartoon and features familiar villains like Shredder and his Foot clan, Baxter Stockman and the mousers, and the Purple Dragon gang. Of course, the turtles' good friends, Casey Jones, April O'Neil, and Master Splinter, will be making appearances, too.

The game features a nifty cel-shaded look that makes it look just like the cartoon. As one of the four turtles, you use combinations of strong and weak button attacks to beat up on the numerous bad guys; giant cartoony sound effects complement the vicious goon-beatings. Turtles can also attack with throwing stars.

Each turtle has his own unique attributes and abilities in combat, but we don't know what they are, yet. Unfortunately, the game is only for one or two players, but will include a versus mode.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles promises to be a great game for young fans of the cartoon and nostalgic college-age dudes alike. If you remember the TMNT games from your youth, you'll dig this one, too -- it's by the same designers! Cowabunga, dudes!
