Tetris Worlds

by Mike Hrusecky - June 22, 2002, 2:09 pm EDT

Puzzle fanatics are probably excited to know that Tetris is going Cubed. Learn about all of the worlds and modes of play before picking yours up for only $39 next week.

Tetris Worlds takes everything you love about Tetris and spices it up with 3D graphics and six variations of gameplay.

Classic Tetris - You should all know how this mode plays.

Square Tetris - The objective is the same as Tetris. But additionally, the player gets a bonus for creating 4x4 squares out of the falling blocks. Lines cleared that contain a piece of a Square earn big bonus points. A T-spin coupled with a line clear will cause certain blocks to avalanche.

Cascade Tetris - Clearing a line causes the individual parts of left over blocks to fall into cells below a cleared line. When such falling pieces cause another line to form, such a line will also be cleared.

Sticky Tetris - The objective of Sticky Tetris is to dig through the "garbage blocks" and clear the blocks in the bottom row of blocks. When a line is cleared, left over parts of Tetriminos will cascade. However, if some part of a block comes to rest next to a part of the same color, they will STICK together. If enough blocks of the same color stick together they will reach "Critical Mass" and be cleared from the Matrix. When a player clears the bottom row of garbage, he clears the level.

Hot-Line Tetris - Clear lines in specially marked rows of cells called "Hot-Lines." There are six Hot-Lines in the Matrix. The higher up in the Matrix a player clears a Hot-Line, the more points a player gets.

Fusion Tetris - Connect falling blocks called "Atom Blocks" to the "Fusion Block" hidden beneath the garbage blocks at the beginning of the game. Clearing a line containing an Atom Block causes a cascade.

Multi-player games let up to four players play and see who can clear levels the fastest.

You can also play Tetris in six different worlds, each evolving as you clear levels.

Tetris Worlds for GameCube is coming June 28 for $39 at many retailers.
