Super Dodge Ball Advance

by Jeff Shirley - June 5, 2001, 12:13 pm EDT

Dodgeball, like it was meant to be.

The year is 20XX, and dodgeball has become the number one sport in the world. Teams from all over the world now compete in dodgeball tournaments to prove once and for all who is the best dodgeball team ever. Do you have what it takes to take your team all the way to the top?

Atlus has commissioned developer Mirion to resurrect an old Technos game about a team of dodgeball players sent around the world to become Dodgeball Champs. Not only can you link up GBAs for two-player multiplayer goodness, but also there is going to be a plethora of new special moves, more than from the previous game. The new version will also allow player customization if teams. Super Dodgeball is most known for its NES appearance, although the plucky title also found its way to the PC Engine and the NEO GEO.

The game itself asks you to commandeer a dodgeball team to fight against other teams from around the world to receive the coveted title of Dodgeball World Champion. Of course, you are not going to just pitch the ball back and forth, for your team has a veritable arsenal of super moves to down your opponents with brutal efficiency.

Atlus and developer Mirion are coming out with a brand new game in the classic Super Dodgeball series for GBA that's slated to coincide with the U.S. launch of the Game Boy Advance. Super Dodgeball Advance will continue the legacy set forth by the original Super Dodgeball on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

One of the key features included in this new handheld version are over 50 devastating super throws to crush the opposition! (These are almost like special moves in fighting games.) Although opponents can safely catch any throw, many of the special throws have teleportation, crazy trajectories, distractions, and other quirks that make them almost impossible to catch or avoid.

There are 9 world-class teams to do battle with and several hidden teams that you can unlock as you progress through the tournament. You can also customize your own team by defining the attributes of your players!

Like most other GBA launch titles, you'll be able to link two Game Boy Advances for some head to head action! Although 4-players would have been fun, 1-on-1 gameplay should still be great & account for some hectic multiplayer sessions. Customizable characters should really add replay value to the game, making teams unique. We also suspect that many fans of the original NES version will be wanting to renew their old rivalries...

Dodge Ball Advance has a suggested retail price of US $39.99, so be sure to look out for this revitalized classic!
