Street Fighter Alpha 3

by Ty Shughart - September 25, 2001, 1:29 pm EDT

The gigantic 2D fighter on the lil' GBA!

In the newly available screenshots, you can see that there is indeed a 3-character Dramatic battle mode, and that 33 characters are (initially) on the selection screen.

According to an UNCONFIRMED report from Magic Box, the 3 new characters in Capcom's GameBoy Advance port of Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper have been revealed. The 3 characters are from Capcom Vs SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001. They are Yun (from SF3), Maki (from Final Fight 2) and Eagle (from SF1).

According to IGN Pocket, only one cartridge will be needed to play multiplayer. It's still unknown if three-player "dramatic" battles will be included.

Crawfish Interactive has confirmed that it is developing SFA3 for Game Boy Advance, and it will be released in October 2001. (Presumably that's for the Western world, as Crawfish is based in the UK...) The official character tally so far is 37, with 34 returning from the Dreamcast version and three new ones added for good measure.

According to a report by The Magic Box, this game will actually be based on the newest version of Capcom's SF Alpha series in Japan: Street Fighter Zero 3 Upper. (The Alpha series is known as "Zero" in Japan.) The game will also include over thirty characters...not bad at all for a handheld cartridge! Hopefully Capcom can squeeze in plenty of animation frames for all those characters.

Originally a CPS2 arcade hardware game, Street Fighter Alpha 3 is one of Capcom's core Street Fighter games. Lots of style and deep play made it an instant classic, and now it's making its way to the GBA. Can Capcom crowbar everthing into a GBA cart, and deal with a four-button controller?

Here's what set SFA3 apart from other fighters - as for all of them being included in the GBA version, well, that's just speculation.

  • 'ISM' Fighting Styles: Three different modes are available to play each fighter in:

    • A-ism (or Z-ism): Three levels of super bar allow you to perform level one, two, or three super moves.
    • X-ism: One big super bar for super moves and enhanced defense and offense. You lose some other abilities to balance for this, though...
    • V-ism: Custom combo meter mode. When activated, you get a 'ghost' to allow you to string together an insane amount of moves for the duration of activation.
  • Fighting Modes: An addition to ISMs, you can select one of these:
    • Classic mode: No air blocking, taunts, guard meters, or any of that weird newfangled stuff.
    • Mazi (Serious) Mode: Give and take more damage - but you can't lose any rounds!
    • Saikyo (Strongest) Mode: Less guard meter, easy to dizzy, no move cancels - for the tauntmasters only!
  • Dramatic Battles: These are two-on-one fights, usually with a health adjustment to balance things about. Two people can cooperate to put together huge combos...
  • World Tour: In this mode, you can build a character's power with custom attributes by completing mission battles with special rules.
  • Arcade Mode: This includes lots of dialogue and long endings with special art!

As for making the game playable with four buttons, there are at least two possibilities - a tap vs hold style, like in Super SF2 Turbo Revival, or hold forward+medium for a Fierce attack, like in Capcom vs SNK.

SFA3 features somewhere around 6 million characters - lets hope they can cram them all on a GBA cart, eh?

  • Adon: Muay Thai fighter with the annoying tweety voice.
  • Akuma: Evil Shotokan warrior. Also available in Shin Akuma boss flavor.
  • Birdie: Shadoloo minion with powerful throw and charge moves, and weird character design. :S
  • Balrog: Everybody's favorite boxing street fighter. "I got paid!"
  • Blanka: Jimmy from the jungle features roll-and-tumble moves.
  • Cammy: Brainwashed by Shadaloo or not, she is an excellent fighter - watch out for the high-priority Cannon Spike attack.
  • Charlie: Guile's friend and First Lieutenant of the air force - he seeks to put Bison out of commission.
  • Chun Li: The original female street fighter - an interpol agent working with Charlie to defeat Bison and Shadaloo.
  • Cody: He helped save Metro City, but he couldn't ever stop fighting - and was jailed for it. He breaks out, looking for more.
  • Dan: This ambitious fighter will not rest until his Saikyo (Strongest) Style is world famous!
  • Dee Jay: The cheerful Jamaican kickboxer just wants a good fight.
  • Dhalsim: The stretchy fire-breathing Yoga master makes a comeback!
  • E. Honda: The sumo-style world warrior is a force to be reckoned with. And fat.
  • Evil Ryu: "Do you know what lies ahead, and what this energy will bring?" This version of Ryu has the Shun Goku Satsu, so watch out.
  • Fei Long: His own style of kung fu has made him an action star in Hong Kong. Sound familiar?

  • Gen: The wily old assassin is Akuma's old master, and still possesses incredible fighting power.
  • Guile: The air force pilot is despatched on a mission to find his old friend...
  • Guy: Metro City's own Bushin style master relies on speedy attacks.
  • Juli & Juni: Bison's fighting dolls use a style similiar to Cammy's.
  • Karin: Sakura's friend and rival.

  • Ken: Er, Ryu's friend and rival, and U.S. martial arts champion.
  • M. Bison: Evil leader of Shadaloo - also available in super boss-ism flavor.
  • R. Mika: She possesses devastating pro-wrestling style moves.
  • Rolento: The Mad Gear member wants to build his power to create his own military nation.
  • Rose: She seeks to defeat Bison with her "Soul Power" yadda yadda yadda.
  • Ryu: Likely the greatest, most famous fighting game character of all time - the original Shotokan fighter.
  • Sagat: The giant Muay Thai fighter seeks a rematch with the one who scarred his chest.
  • Sakura: This young street fighter goes to pursue Ryu again.
  • Sodom: The wacky Mad Gear member wants to acheive a higher level of cultural worship. Or something. I wonder if Nintendo'll make Capcom change the name to 'Katana' again. :\
  • T. Hawk: The "giant Indian dude" is on a mission to kick Bison's ass, like pretty much everyone else. He has dive moves and some 360-motion throws.
  • Vega: The masked maniac with the killer claws gets his spot in the Alpha series. Watch out for his wall dive moves.
  • Zangief: The body-slammin' Russian Red Hurricane uses devastating spinning piledriver moves.
