The lovable and happy-go-lucky dino is all but confirmed to bring his sweet-as-candy N64 game to the GBA.... So here's his preview.
Although there has been no "official" confirmation of this title, the first level of this game--or rather a remix of it--was the premiere demo for the Next-Generation Game Boy. Don't let the fact that it isn't a launch title throw you off: Super Mario Bros. DX was originally just one level used in a similar fashion to the Yoshi Story level, but then came out more than half a year later as a full game to became an instant classic.
Yoshi's Story was rightfully deemed too easy, but it was still an enjoyable game. It involved running around in a 2.5-D pop-up book world as one of many Yoshis. The oh-so-simple goal was to eat 30 fruit. Although the game encouraged exploration, the rewards were not usually enough to merit doing anything else but play “Hungry, Hungry Hippos,” as a higher score alone isn’t worth much. The game had enough promise to be a great sequel to Yoshi's Island. The graphics, basics and music were there, but these were wasted because the director (not Shiggy) chose to keep the game-play simple for young players.
Making the GBA release a remix could easily improve the game: by making more challenging situations and making fruit a rarer commodity would be one way. For instance, the game is quite challenging if you attempt to go for all melons. Perhaps even better yet would be more rewards for finding secrets (like in Yoshi's Island.) If necessary, the collecting could be scraped in favor of a linear approach.
Nintendo could do so many things to improve the game that it really deserves a second chance on the GBA. And if nothing else, it will at least provide wonderful graphics to the portable.
