Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2

by Michael Cole - July 29, 2001, 1:41 pm EDT

Mario's 96-exited World is coming to the Game Boy Advance! Luigi says, "Yahoo!"

A few new details have emerged conserning this highly anticipated remake, although these details are slightly disappointing. From the two provided screenshots, it is obvious that the graphics will not be updated. This is probably due to the fact that, unlike Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario World never got an face lift in Mario All-Stars.

Also, according to IGNPocket, Mario Advance 2's multiplayer will be another remake of Mario Bros., just like in Mario Advance (1). Hopefully, multicart play will provide a new, fresher multiplayer mode, such as competition within the Mario World levels. Online play (in Japan) or new levels would make up for these drawbacks, though.

There is still no word on whether Mario Advance 2 will feature replacement of enemies, like in Mario Advance, but since the game will be playable at Space World, this and more will be known soon.

The SNES debut title Super Mario World was an exciting experience for all. As a Pack-in game with the SNES, anyone with the system should be familiar with the title. Taking a page out of the Super Mario Bros. 3 gameplay, the game features oodles of exploration and rewards. Although the game did not feature nearly as many power-ups as SMB3, the new moves, Mario's pal Yoshi, and the elusive "Special Stage" made the adventure fresh and exciting.

The game showed off the SNES's first generation graphics quite well, but the GBA version will definitely make the game prettier. We can expect an even more colorful world with more secerets when the game makes into our hands later this year.

Nintendo will not dare to release this game without extra game options. Although red coins will probably make it into the game, it will be interesting to see what happens to the Yoshi Egg aspect of the staple "Challenge Mode." As the Yoshi eggs are already captured in the Koopa Kids' castles in SMW, it may lead to confusion if Yoshi eggs are also scattered throughout the levels. Perhaps the story will be slightly altered. Perhaps Nintendo will replace Yoshi eggs with various treasures a la Wario Land. In addition, Nintendo will have to come up with another zany multiplayer mode to support the revitalized link cable.

Super Mario Advance 2 is expected to hit Japanese shelves by the end of this year and is sure to sell like hot-cakes.
