Final Fight One

by Ty Shughart - March 17, 2001, 2:42 pm EST

Haggar, Cody, and Guy take to the streets in this GBA re-release.

Originally debuting on Capcom's CPS1 hardware, Final Fight is one of the many SNES-era classics rereleasing on Game Boy Advance (although Final Fight games were also released on NES, Sega CD and Saturn). The original Final Fight features Haggar, Cody, Guy (who seemed to be missing in the SNES version, which had other problems) and a cast of villainous villains which obviously require your severe beatings.

Final Fight used to be a major franchise for Capcom - and many of the characters got full, playable appearances in other games. Slammasters featured Mayor Mike, and the Street Fighter Alpha series had Guy, Cody, Sodom, and Rolento, all fully playable. Even more recently, Capcom vs SNK and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike all have their nods to Final Fight.

The story: Newly elected Mayor and former street fighter Mike Haggar vows to rid Metro City of crime. The Mad Gear gang, however, sees things differently and kidnaps Haggar's daughter, Jessica, to insure his cooperation. Haggar, of course, goes on a punk-smashing rampage with Jessica's boyfriend, Cody, and their Ninja buddy, Guy, to help out.

The gameplay consists of thrashing the Mad Gear gang with basic combos and hold moves (Watch out for Haggar's Atomic Piledriver). There are a couple weapons, too; the pipe (ouch!) and knife. There are bonus stages ("Oh! My car...") and huge bosses along the way.

Screenshots indicate all three original characters will be playable, and two players can play simultaneously.

The game will release May 25 in Japan. There are no details for a U.S. release, yet.
