Resident Evil 0

New Story Bits Revealed!

In an effort to show that Nintendo is indeed after the older demographic, Nintendo showed a few more scenes of the upcoming horror thriller. The trailer began with shots of the recently released RE remake and then went on to talk about RE0.

As we mentioned in an earlier update, it is indeed true that the story revolves around the Bravo team’s story in the mansion. The trailer showed Bravo team members being mauled and destroying monsters. Very little new footage was shown, though we did see Rebecca being helped out by what appeared to be an NPC character. (Most likely the ex-Navy S.E.A.L.)

The game is said to be on the show floor tomorrow, and we can’t wait to play it.

Capcom of Japan recently announced that Resident Evil 0, a game recently slated for the N64, will not be making an appearance at Spaceworld. This comes as a surprise for some, as the title has been in development for quite a long time.

However, there is a chance that the title could pop up at TGS, the next large video game based expo after Spaceworld. Though there is some speculation that the title may be too early to show, that point is rather ludicrous considering the time Capcom has put into the title.

There is a possibility that Capcom has delayed releasing the product until the Resident Evil movie is released, which partially coincides with the upcoming GameCube game. We here at Planet GameCube will be persistent in unlocking the mystery of Resident Evil 0 for you guys, for we are the masters.... of unlocking.

According to this Tendo Box report, Capcom’s Resident Evil Zero being started a couple of years before it, the forthcoming movie Resident Evil: Ground Zero will be loosely based on the Gamecube exclusive title. Hmmm, does this mean we’ll see the lovely Milla Jovovich (who plays "Alice" in the upcoming RE flick) in the game brawlin’ against the undead?

TB also says we can Expect the GameCube game to be revealed at SpaceWorld. As Sega will also being showing games at SpaceWorld, it seems like the perfect time to reveal the new Resident Evil as well.

We’re at E3 and Resident Evil 0 is nowhere to be found. It could be behind closed doors but we’re not counting on it –we’re hearing rumors that Nintendo hasn’t been putting pressure on third-parties (while Microsoft has –or so the rumors say) to show things at E3.

PGC asked about the game though and the alleged Nintendo exclusivity to Nintendo is still a very active possibility—if not probability. Capcom also said that when it did have such “system exclusive” games, they are exclusive for a year or more. Nintendophiles know this all too well—remember Mega Man 64 and Resident Evil 2 for N64?

Still, this is very good news and we got it straight from Capcom, who also said they “love Nintendo.”

PGC readers may remember that Louie mentioned the RE0 exclusivity awhile ago. Hey, that cat is turning out to be pretty prophetic. How is he getting the info when Billy isn’t?

A few of our readers have been worried about the developments on the RE 0 front, i.e. Capcom allegedly not having the GameCube version of Resident Evil. Since we don’t have time to answer all of the recent mail on the subject, we’re back again to tell ya to relax.

As stated in the last preview update, we fully expect to see the game in some form at the show, video or playable, despite what Capcom USA reps have to say about it. Capcom’s USA denials & the fact that this game could be a Nintendo exclusive for at least a year make an appearance in Nintendo’s booth.

Hmmm, isn’t that where Resident Evil 0 was during last year’s show? Yes. Was it worth updating the preview to remind everybody about this? Maybe.

After an excellent plot speculation by Zosha, it’s already time to update the Resident Evil 0 preview again with a couple new happenings.

First off, Capcom held a meeting in Tokyo on April 11th to announce a PS2 title. Capcom was asked about Biohazard 0 for GameCube (as RE is known as Biohazard in Japan). Capcom said claimed to various circumstances they could only reveal the game’s logo. They did and the game's logo is now in Resident Evil 0’s profile.

Second, it seems that Capcom Reps have told IGNCube that it will not show any GameCube or X-Box software at E3 this year. This would include Biohazard 0, which is believed to be a launch title for GameCube and is considered the only “official” third-party GameCube project. Capcom USA officials claimed the firm's E3 showing would be dedicated to PlayStation 1 and 2, as well as Game Boy Advance products.

Whether or not this turns out to be accurate is a bit difficult to say; it’s likely that Capcom are not going to say anything about any NGC projects before E3 & have certainly been encouraged to stay quiet by Nintendo. Then again, if the software giant is saying now it won’t show off games for GameCube or X-Box, they might not be kidding. For whatever reason, there’s a chance it won’t reveal “next-gen” projects until sometime after E3 – and it would have to be sooner than later.

Regardless of what Capcom is saying now, it is hard to believe RE 0 will have zero presence at E3 (obvious pun, sorry). Capcom will probably show the game in some form, either in its own booth or Nintendo’s and certainly behind closed doors somewhere. At E3 ‘99, Resident Evil: Code Veronica was shown off in video form only and still turned many heads. Whatever happens at E3 with RE 0, it won’t be long until we find out what’s up. You better believe that if the game isn’t at the show, we’ll do everything we can to find out why, as well as some new game info too! Stay tuned…

RE Junkies are a funny lot. Yes they realize that the series they happen to enjoy has quite a few faults, but nevertheless, still look forward to the next adventure with anticipation. Horrible voice acting, plot holes, the dreaded "RE Control" and blatantly stupid camera angles are always the source of derision among the uninitiated. But, to the Raccoon City elite they are the hallmarks of a disgustingly guilty pleasure.

While much of the upcoming Zombie game is shrouded in mystery, one thing that most RE fans are speculating about is the plot. As any self-respecting Zombie Hunter should know, in RE1, there were two "endings": one for both Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. With Chris, Barry Burton is still missing while Rebecca Chambers (heroine of RE0) escapes with you, and Wesker dies at the hand of the Tyrant. When you complete the game as Jill however, there is not even mention of Miss Chambers, and Wesker makes off so he can get his little "change" in time for RE:CV. As time progressed we learned that Jill's scenario is the "Correct" one via RE3: Nemesis, as it speaks of Barry joining the fight against Umbrella after sending his family to Canada. What about Rebecca? Does she die in the mansion of RE1? If one looks to RE2, there's still mention of her existence as you can find a hidden picture in the Police Department.

So then we come to RE0, the prequel to the entire Haunted Mansion disaster. Rebecca is the main character along with a Navy S.E.A.L. Big Deal, right? Actually no. It's going to explain quite a few discrepancies of the entire Biohazard Saga. First of all Rebecca is mentioned in RE:CV as part of the last living S.T.A.R.S, so she's not zombie fodder. Then, how the hell did she escape that Deathtrap? After all, if you uh, know her "personality" it would seem a bit of a surprise...

The basic storyline that I've been able to think up is as follows: RE0 is the explanation of what happened to Rebecca. Exactly how she landed in the whole mess and her escape into safer lands. Also, there's an off chance that we see more of Wesker's background, which is rather enticing since everyone and their undead grandmother are dying to know what "HBC" is. (If you have no idea what the hell I'm talking about play RE:CV a few more times, that or git outta my preview! *Cocks shotgun*)

In the end one can only imagine what the minds at Flagship are cooking up for us, the Biohazard |337, the kind who completed RE3 9 times because we're really disturbed and belong in an insano asylum er …because we're dedicated in finding all the story epilogues, and appreciate all the little touches that Capcom put in to tie the irrational loose ends that were causing fans to take up heavy arms and maim innocent people screaming "ZOMBIES ARE EVERYWHERE" uh… bothering us.

At any rate there is less than 34 days to go until E3, where RE0 will be unveiled to the world. You can bet that PGC will have enough first-hand impressions to decap a zombie.

One can only hope it remains a Gamecube Exclusive...

We've finally added a preview for the highly anticipated Biohazard: Zero. If you'll remember, the game was planned to be an N64 exclusive and appear on our shores as Resident Evil: Zero. When the game was announced, many were thrilled; Nintendo was finally getting an original game from Capcom franchise. Screens and information released indicated that N64 owners were in for a treat. It's not just an exclusive game, Capcom is working in several new features and variations of typical RE play control.

However, after the game was announced and shown off at E3 2000, it was suddenly pulled from release N64 schedules. Rumors circulated for some time that RE: 0 would not be a N64 game at all but would appear for the mysterious Nintendo system in development, then known as Project: Dolphin. It wasn't long before rumors were confirmed along with word that Zero might just even be a launch title.

Since we caught wind of the move, there hasn't been much new information regarding Resident Evil: 0, save that despite the switch in format, it will remain a Nintendo exclusive. Luckily, since the game has been underway for some time, here's what we do know:

First off, a new character, Billy Cohen, will join RE veteran Rebecca Chambers and be fully playable. Cohen is a former Navy officer, accused of murdering 23 people. While being transported to prison, the military train Cohen is on is attacked by one of Umbrella's monsters. He narrowly escapes, encounters Rebecca knee deep in zombie madness and enters the world of survival horror. Having two playable characters isn't original for a RE game, though how the two work together will be.

Instead of having two separate adventures for each character, players can for switch between the two at will at any time in the game. Even more exciting is the fact that the "other" character can be given commands while not under direct player control, similar to party fighting in RPGs-great idea. Another interesting difference this time around is that there will be no Inventory Boxes, which has long been a mainstay in the RE series. Instead of storing items, players will have to strategically divide items between Billy and Rebecca in a shared item menu and leave items behind that they don't have room to hold.

Resident Evil: Zero would have been a huge title for N64 and now that it's heading for GameCube, it should be even pretty, more exciting (not to mention a lot more scary). Additionally, since it will likely be available right at the launch of GC, or soon after, RE:0 will communicate that Nintendo's next system is definitely not just for kids.

From everything reported previously, it sounds like Capcom is on the right track, both with the plot and play control. Remember, this game will be a prequel, (think SW: Ep.1) and will likely set the stage for the whole RE saga. Therefore, we're not sure if the game is happening in Raccoon City, outside of it or where exactly.

We're expecting to see the game in action at E3 2001 this May. We'll keep bringing you info as we get it, just get ready to take out Umbrella's undead in an all new adventure. It may have taken awhile for Nintendo to get its own RE, but it RE: 0 will be worth the wait.
