Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Discuss in talkback!

The Turtles are back, and get this... so is the developer!

The first thing I saw on the title screen for the new TMNT game was the developer. The name jumped right out at me, and I knew right then and there that this game was going to be great. Mirage Studios, developers of the original TMNT games have the job this time too, and as I expected, it played just like it did 15 years(!) ago.

The demo had you pick one of the turtles, and plops you down in a city stage. You can fell your foes with a quick, weak attack, or a slower fierce attack, using the A and B buttons. These can be mashed into combo movements that can take out lines of oncoming enemies. The turtles can also jump, dash, and throw various ninja stars at foes for attacking at distance. The controls come out very tight and easy to pick up and play, and it's fun, of course.

The cel-shaded graphics fit the heroes in a half-shell pretty well. You can see Raph or Leo scowl as they run toward the on-rails camera, teeth and all. Enemies have those goon looks to them too, and the robotic mousers look great in white with a thick black outline. There's a retro comic style to the game as well, where every time you hit a baddie, a word comes spitting out, like in the old Batman live-action series. It's really cool to see something like that again, and fun.

It's safe to say that there's no way this game can go wrong, since it's basically the same gameplay mechanic that made it so popular in the first place. I'll be looking forward to the release later this year, and you should too.
