The home for Nintendo amusements.

A large focus of Nintendo's main E3 press conference was Nintendo Land, a theme-park styled hub for mini-games based around game franchises.

Featuring 12 different attractions in all, Nintendo Land allows for up to five to participant in a variety of activities based around the Wii U GamePad and Wii Remote. Though it differs by attraction, players can play by themselves, against others, or group up for cooperative play.

Five of the 12 attractions were confirmed and shown at Nintendo's conference today:

Donkey Kong's Crash Course: Based around an course reminiscent of the original Donkey Kong arcade game, this single-player game has players using the GamePad's motion control functionality to steer a moving cart through obstacles.

Luigi's Ghost Mansion: In this competitive/cooperative game, the player using the GamePad controls a ghost chasing up to four other human players, who are outfitted with flashlights. The ghost, who is invisible on the TV screen to the other players, sneaks around in an attempt to capture them. The opposing players must use cooperation to alert each other of the ghost's whereabouts, as well as revive downed friends, as they escape and fight the ghost with their lights.

Animal Crossing: Sweet Day: One player, using the GamePad, controls a pair of town guards charged with keeping up to four other players (who use Wii Remotes) from entering a candy orchard.

The Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest: One player, who uses the GamePad to aim and shoot arrows, is joined by up to three other players, who use Wii Remotes as swords, in this cooperative game. Together, they fight different kinds of enemies in a cloth-like version of a Legend of Zelda game.

Takamaru's Ninja Castle: Inspired by an early Japan-only Famicom game, the single-player game has the player swiping on the GamePad's touch screen to launch ninja stars at attackers and earn points.

The other seven attractions available in Nintendo Land will be announced as the game nears release this holiday season.

Meh.

SorenJune 05, 2012

The game we hate now but will really enjoy playing anyway in a couple of months...

Pixelated PixiesJune 05, 2012

@Soren

I wouldn't have thought that any one would hate it. It's just so...meh.

This really shouldn't have capped off the presentation.  I think the placement, along with having to sit through Sing and Just Dance 4, is what turned so many people off (on top of the already existing stigma towards minigame compilations).

Still, it was nice to see Find Mii get a second life as that Luigi's Mansion minigame (unless they're both on it for some reason).  I hope Battle Mii is still in this one.

will this be packed in or not?

It seems cute but I want to see minigames not just main hub area which they showed way too much of

The problem with this game is that Nintendo is not going to give us both this AND a Nintendo Kingdom Hearts kind of game.  They're only going to do the Nintendo-themed-land bit once and they picked casual bullshit.

Remember the rumour and the Metroid/Star Fox crossover?  Remember how we got excited about the possibility of SOME sort of Nintendo crossover?  THIS is it!  This lame ass bullshit is it!  Fuck me.

juancaarJune 05, 2012

It saddend me to see that nothing really got me hyped up. The games didnt look good, the graphics weren't that great... and the lack of mentioning online play really bummed me out.

I WAS going to buy it on release, but now ill just wait to see if its any good.

rlse9June 05, 2012

This screams pack in game to me.  Don't know if it will be, but it should be.  With a new controller type, just like with Wii, they really need a pack in game included that shows off how great the new controller is.  This game sounds like it would fit that role well but outside of that, doesn't sound like it would be that great of a full price standalone release.

Remember when Nintendo first talked about the blue ocean market and there was concern over Nintendo "casualizing" games like Mario and Zelda?  At the time that sort of concern was seen as an overreaction and that we didn't have to worry.  Um, isn't this it?  Mii's have invaded Zelda.  It's fucking over.  The casuals have invaded "our" games.  They make a game about visiting a Nintendo themepark and they make it for the Wii Sports/Fit crowd.  Not the longtime fans that made these franchises worth any money in the first place but the casual fan that never bought a videogame before 2006 and bought only like four Wii games.

Though I don't even understand why they think such a game is an ideal choice for this audience.  I don't even know what Takamaru is.  It's like such a game requires hardcore Nintendo fandom to truly appreciate but it has casual gameplay that appeals more to beginners.  Or is the idea just to get the casuals familiar with the big franchises in hope that they'll buy the next sequel to those games?

Wow. Over-react much?

TJ SpykeJune 06, 2012

Ian has become a pessimist for pretty much everything Nintendo. Nintendo could announce that every Wii U will come with a supermodel to give you blowjobs whenever you want, and he would still complain.

The game sounds alright, not great or anything but nothing wrong with it. I have no doubt Nintendo will make it a good game.

Wow... One thing's for sure-- Ian certainly chose a very appropriate username for himself.

It's pretty meh to me as well. I'd only play it if it was a pack-in or already on the console like Find Mii. I have no qualms with it existing and it should be fun for people who like these sort of games. Not my cup of tea though.

The only thing I found odd about it was how Nintendo felt the need to keep explaining what it is. They spent a considerable amount of time on stage talking about it then a good part of the developer's round table talking about it again. It doesn't seem as immediately accessible as Wii Sports where you look at it and practically know what to do.

Only once? Um, what about Super Smash Bros.? Or even more specifically, Subspace Emissary?

I don't see how someone could possibly look at this game and rationally relate it to an actual crossover universe like KH. Not to mention that using that logic already contradicts your premise that Nintendo would never do this more than once since that would mean they already have-- 9-Volt/18-Volt's mini-games in the various WarioWare installments.

Also, we got excited over the Metroid/Starfox rumor?? What world are you living in? The overwhelming response in all forums I've read were that of desperate hope that it would turn out to only be a rumor, with a HUGE sigh of relief when that was confirmed to the case.

I think it's a fair assumption that Nintendo themselves don't even know that yet. Just like with the price, they're most likely gauging the reception at E3 to make the decision. In fact, that's probably what will ultimately be determining the final price in the first place.
