Resident Evil 0

Shotgun + Zombie head = Bloody Splatter.

Needless to say, this is probably one of the better RE games yet. While I am missing the infamous “Control Type C” that was introduced with the Resident Evil remake, the game is offering much more than the earlier titles. Graphically speaking, it is even more impressive than the remake: aliasing has been fixed, along with that annoying “stutter” that occurred when the screen changed (usually within cut-scenes.) There are even more impressive effects both in the FMV backgrounds and with the characters. Speaking of which, the characters animate much more naturally than the previous title. Lip synching, while not perfect, is much improved, and Capcom seems to have gotten the hang of bringing emotions to both Rebecca and Billy.

The partner and item systems are what make the game shine. Having a partner for backup help and being able to be two places at once have thus far been used intelligently. Only the first split has seemed “contrived”. Also the differences between characters are well balanced. Billy is much stronger (i.e.: is able to take more hits) while Rebecca is the only character who can mix herbs, thanks to her medical training. Unfortunately, you’ll find yourself playing mostly as Billy, and using Rebecca as back-up, or “pack mule”. This makes sense however, considering he’s a hardened marine while she’s a newbie S.T.A.R.S. member.

As for the new item system, I can only praise the Capcomian gods that be for finally creating an item system that actually makes sense. Characters can leave items wherever they wish, and can always come back to them. It appears that even if you’ve ‘finished’ an area and can’t return you will still be able to access those items — because after an explosion, they’re conveniently thrown to where your characters wake up.

Puzzles, as per usual, are in the typical Resident Evil “style.” This means that briefcases will be locked with rings and you must add up numbers for a code while the timer is running. Isn’t it wonderful? While it’s cheesy, I love it.

All in all, I love the game so far. If you’re any sort of Resident Evil fan, this game is for you.
