Smuggler's Run: Warzones

by Ty Shughart - May 26, 2002, 2:06 am EDT

I love crime!

Smuggler's Run: Warzones is already running very smoothly on GameCube. I'm a big fan of the original on PS2, and I can safely say this is looking very good.

I'd say the most improved thing so far is the environments. You may remember the PS2 original to be smooth but also plain and just totally drab, but you'll be pleased to know there are plenty of grass and trees (to run into) and some other details. The AI may be a bit sharper, too. I'm starting to think I was lured into getting hit by that train. Blarg.

The controls feel natural. The gas and brakes are A and B though, not set to the triggers. Why not take advantage of the analog triggers? Maybe that's an option?

There's lots of new vehicles, and each vehicle has two special features (I think). For example, the baja truck can drop explosives behind it or do an 'emergency' lift about 15 feet into the air.

The mission objectives in the missions I played seem same-old, though. Grab the supplies, stop the enemy vehicle, etc. None of the units were multiplayer at the show (er, unless I missed 'em), but I think it's a safe assumption to say the multiplayer will be pretty nice, judging from the ol' PS2 version. I see some great 4-player happening in the future. Keep an eye on this one.
