Robotech: Battlecry

by Zosha Arushan - May 24, 2002, 10:46 am EDT

Big Giant Robot with guns. Do you really need any other reason?

Things were early. Very early. In fact, Robotech was running off of a GC development kit. That early. But guess what? I really really liked what I saw.

The celshaded graphics look quite close to the animé, though the backgrounds were rather bland and clearly nowhere close to being complete. Still the characters themselves animated well (there was only one mech available). The level I played was of the “find all enemies and eliminate them” variety. Some of the opposite forces mechs had no AI and were therefore unable to be killed. L and R let you strafe side to side and A is your “fly” button in mech mode. Pressing up on the Dpad has your character turn into a jet, but since the demo was still so early, if you went too far on the game plane, it would automatically revert to mecha format.

Controls while adequate clearly need tweaking. I don’t expect a Big Giant Robot to turn on a dime, but I felt it was just too unresponsive. Combat seems to work well with multiple weapons (X and Y buttons) and I’m really interested in seeing how this title turns out.

Here’s to the final version.
