Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

by Daniel Bloodworth - February 19, 2002, 12:41 am EST

First impressions of Sonic on GameCube. Multiplayer, Chao-raising, and more!

Since I was already planning to get Sonic on GBA, I thought I might as well pick up SA2: B for GameCube as well. Unfortunately, I must say that so far, Sonic on GameCube has not met my expectations.

With the exception of bosses, the challenge seems to be non-existent. I’ve gotten through a fair number of levels without much resistance. Plus, unlike the multi-pathed levels of Sonic Advance, the design is very linear with little incentive to explore. Any exploring you might try to do is usually hindered by the camera which always points in the direction you’re “supposed” to go.

The two-player stages are good adaptations of the main levels. The Sonic/Shadow stages will be dominated by whoever knows the stage better, but the other multiplayer modes are more balanced. The Knuckles/Rouge levels are actually quite a bit more enjoyable when you’re competing with someone else to find the emeralds.

Chao-raising seems to be very much like tending a garden. You have to give a lot of time and attention to the Chaos if you want to develop them. It certainly isn’t for the impatient. There are several different competitions and multiplayer modes, but since the player doesn’t have direct control over Chaos, the stronger Chao will always win.

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle is a fun roller-coaster ride in many ways with a fairly large variety of stages and multiplayer games, but there seems to be a lot lacking in terms of level design and challenge. There is a lot for me to finish still, so I could be speaking too soon. I’ll provide more detail in my final review later this week
