Super Smash Bros. Melee

by Billy Berghammer - December 3, 2001, 6:43 pm EST

I must write impressions very quickly so I can get back to the gaming. Yes, Super Smash Bros. Melee is that good. And this is coming from a guy who didn’t really care for Smash Bros. to begin with. My e-mail address is inside awaiting flame mail…

About 3pm today the mailman rang my doorbell and dropped off my copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee. The original plan was to play the game for about 2 hours, and write some quick impressions. Four hours later I looked and the clock, and realized I had totally forgot about time. My body clock is officially on Smash Bros. time. I’m in serious trouble.

I never really got into the first Smash Bros. title on the N64. There are zillions of Smash Bros. freaks out there that thought the original was the second coming of Christ. I thought it was fun, but never had the same feelings about it. The one player mode was fun a couple of times, but got old quick. The game quickly started to collect dust. Why? At the time, my friends really weren’t into video games. Smash Bros. as a solo game is rather shallow. So to me, Melee was like, eh….okay.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a whole new single player ball game. Sure there’s the same type of battle arenas, with single character and team battles, but Nintendo has packed in the new platform levels that do add a lot more to the formula. It could be described as a smash-platformer. Just for nostalgic reasons alone this game should be purchased. All of the cameos you’ll run across will take you back many years. I am actually so impressed with what I have played so far I don’t want to ruin any part of the game for anyone. I will sum up these impressions with two words. Nintendo polish. You know how it feels like, and what it plays like. Super Smash Brothers Melee is that polished title you crave.

Most of you who read this will probably be stalking stores anyway tomorrow….waiting to get your hands on this game. I don’t doubt it. You have reason to be hungering for this title. Super Smash Bros Melee is visually stunning, and sonically so good you can spoon up the aural goodness. Fun factor? It’s way beyond any normal human comprehension. Now that I have some skills, I can’t wait to have my friends over for the multiplayer battles. Wait, wasn’t that what was supposed to be the meat of this game?

I apologize to those who expected in depth impressions of every character, arena, mini-game, and trophy. I’m not rushing through this game, and no, I haven’t unlocked all the secret characters. What I will say is this…I am a changed man. Doubters, be weary. Super Smash Bros. Melee is a game you should not go with out.
