Luigi's Mansion

by Mike Sklens - November 2, 2001, 9:38 pm EST

StrikerObi FINALLY got to play GameCube! See what a Cube-virgin thinks of the system, controller, and Luigi's Mansion.

After more than 2 years of waiting, I finally got to play the GameCube. Sadly, I was not able to attend the 2001 E3 conference. So, when I heard that a bunch of Target stores had playable GameCubes, I hopped into my car and drove down there. I walked in and over to the electronics section. And there it was, the Nintendo GameCube. I was overjoyed, almost in awe, that I would finally get to play something I’d be waiting to play since spring of 1999.

The demo disc at Target had 3 games playable on it: Luigi’s Mansion, Wave Race: Blue Storm, and Rogue Leader. The first one I decided to play was Luigi’s Mansion. I’d heard a lot of stuff about this title and really wanted to finally see what it was like.

Honestly, I don’t know why so many people dismiss this title. It’s excellent. I guess they are just looking for something a little more traditional in terms of “Mario” games. Let it be known that this is most certainly not a Mario game. You’ve already heard tons about this title so I’m sure I don’t need to describe it, so I’ll just get straight to my impressions. I really like this game. I think it’s tons of fun. The sheer idea of it is just kind of silly and absurd. Walking around with a flashlight and a vacuum sucking up ghosts, it’s odd.

If it weren’t for the 20 minute limit on game play time (the system reboots after that much time when you play Luigi), I could have sat there all day with the vacuum just pulling on table cloths and other fabrics. The graphics are great, but the effects are stunning. Everything moves when you hit it with the “Poltergust 3000,” even cobwebs.

The sound is good, but I really wish the characters talked. They just spit out mindless blabber and you have to read what they are saying. I don’t mind that, as I’m totally used to it. I was just hoping that since now we have a mass media storage system with CD quality sound, the characters would talk. The rest of the sound is fine other than that.

The controls are good. This was the first time I ever got to use the GameCube controller, and let me say I am fully impressed. The thing is a work of art. I really like the analog triggers, they feel super comfortable. Some people have complained about the controls in this game. I, personally, think they’re fine. I have no problem with them at all. Overall, I really like Luigi’s Mansion and I can’t wait to pick it up with my GameCube on November 18th.
